There are <strong>for</strong>mal associations with <strong>the</strong>Berkshire Health Promotion Service; Berkshire Public Health Department;CABI Bioscience; Cerebrus Ltd; East Malling Research; EdenProject; Forest Research; Institute <strong>for</strong> Animal Health; Institute <strong>of</strong>Grassland and Environmental Research; Lord Zuckerman ResearchCentre (<strong>Reading</strong> Scientific Services Ltd); MRC Radiation and GenomeStability Unit; Natural History Museum; NERC Centre <strong>for</strong> Ecologyand Hydrology; PIRA International; Randolph College; RothamstedResearch; Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust; Royal BotanicGardens, Kew; Royal Horticultural Society; Summer Institute <strong>of</strong>Linguistics; and Syngenta Jealott’s Hill International Research Centre.The Heads <strong>of</strong> several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se institutions are designated VisitingPr<strong>of</strong>essors in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and those staff who contribute toteaching and research in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> have been given <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong>Visiting Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academic Staff.Science & TechnologyCentreInternational andEuropean linksLocated on <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> campus, <strong>the</strong> Science and TechnologyCentre and <strong>Reading</strong> Enterprise Centre <strong>of</strong>fer prime business accommodationto entrepreneurial and innovative companies seeking a<strong>University</strong> based location.The Science and Technology Centre, is home to around 25 companiesmainly in <strong>the</strong> biomedical, environmental and food sectors while<strong>the</strong> recently completed Enterprise Centre – opened in April 2011 – isalready home to a community <strong>of</strong> 25 companies mainly in <strong>the</strong> IT anddigital sectors.Interactions between <strong>the</strong> companies in <strong>the</strong> centres and <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>is encouraged <strong>for</strong> collaborative projects and to <strong>of</strong>fer interestingwork based learning placements and job opportunities <strong>for</strong> graduates.Under European Union funding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lifelong Learning Programme,<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> currently has 195 Erasmus staff and student exchangeagreements with 116 European institutions in 21 countries. In2010-11, 99 <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Reading</strong> students studied or worked abroadin 8 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> participating European countries. Through <strong>the</strong> ERASMUSStaff Mobility programme 47 teaching and training placements werefunded, hosted by 36 institutions in 14 European countries – nearlyhalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants were new to <strong>the</strong> programme. The <strong>University</strong>welcomed 53 non-European study abroad students studying<strong>for</strong> one, two or three terms, from Australia, Brunei Darussalam,China, Japan, Thailand and <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America, and hadan increased number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Reading</strong> students studying at non-Europeandestinations (23). The <strong>Reading</strong> International Office (RIO) is responsible<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> recruitment, admission and care <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>se students.11
