<strong>Handbook</strong> <strong>for</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>Council</strong>Networked computers in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> have access to ActiveDirectoryand DNS services, NFS/SMB fileserving, electronic mail serverssupporting MAPI, SMTP, POP and IMAP, UNIX hosts, WWW serversand a pair <strong>of</strong> 1 Gb/s connections via SuperJANET, <strong>the</strong> nationaleducation network, to <strong>the</strong> Internet. Wireless networking is availablein communal areas on all campuses. IT Services provides technicalsupport <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s central World Wide Web servers andVirtual Learning Environment.IT Services also supports 18 rooms containing clusters <strong>of</strong> PCs (about400 in total) distributed throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, which are used<strong>for</strong> teaching and private study. The <strong>University</strong>’s central administrativecomputing is carried out on Windows-based SQL Server systems.Around 60 people work <strong>for</strong> IT Services. The department is organisedinto groups: Systems and Communications, Administration, InfrastructureOperations, Corporate In<strong>for</strong>mation Systems Support andDirectorates and Schools Liaison. Much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department’s work isproject-based, with members <strong>of</strong> several groups typically involved in<strong>the</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> each new or enhanced service.27
