Obvious musk likeodour, especially during mating season. Like in P. nathusii <strong>the</strong>re is usually a gap between<strong>the</strong> second and third lower incisors (I 2 and I 3 ). Terminal frequency around 55 kHz (52 – 57kHz, in extremes 50 – 64 kHz).Distribution in Europe: The species seems <strong>to</strong> range all over Europe from Scotland andsou<strong>the</strong>rn Scandinavia <strong>to</strong> Iberia and European Tur<strong>key</strong>, but records are missing from someregions like <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn Balkans and sou<strong>the</strong>rnmost Italy. P. pygmaeus is more commonin nor<strong>the</strong>rn and sou<strong>the</strong>rn parts <strong>of</strong> Europe, in Central Europe mostly confined <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> valleys<strong>of</strong> larger river systems.
