It is important that you read them in conjunctionwith the following documents:• General Qualification Regulations (Registered Undergraduate Qualifications)• Schedule A to <strong>The</strong> Qualification Regulations (Registered Undergraduate Qualifications)• Student Regulations• Module Regulations<strong>The</strong>se regulations are available by going online to the <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> ‘Essential Documents’ websiteat www.open.ac.uk/essential-documents and following the link to Registration Documents.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q1 QUALIFICATION NAME<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q1.1 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> offers the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Mental <strong>Health</strong><strong>Nursing</strong>, referred to as the <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, to students who have successfullycompleted the programme of study, which includes practice learning periods and leads to eligibility toapply for entry to the <strong>Nursing</strong> and Midwifery Council (NMC) Register. Holders of the qualificationare permitted to use the letters <strong>BSc</strong> (<strong>Hons</strong>) Men Hlth Nsg (<strong>Open</strong>) after their names.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q2 REGISTRATION<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q2.1 To register as a student for the <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, you must:(a) satisfy the requirements set out in Student Regulation OU 3(b) not be rendered unsuitable to become a registered nurse by:(i) criminal caution or conviction (subject to the provisions of the Rehabilitation of OffendersAct 1974)(ii) health/sickness/disability (subject to occupational health screening)(c) hold the following set of qualifications:(i) key skills Level 2 in Numeracy(ii) key skills Level 2 in Literacyorother educational, professional or vocational qualification deemed to be equivalent(d) satisfy any other restrictions set down by the NMC(e) be sponsored and supported by your employer(f) continue to receive sponsorship and support from your employer throughout your programme ofstudy.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q2.2 In order to maintain your registration and continue study on the degree, you mustmake satisfactory progress. <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>(a) attend the obligatory tutorials and/or other obligatory meetings for each module or obtain anexcusal(b) submit the continuous assessment assignments for each module at the specified time or obtainalternative permission(c) attend any compulsory supervised practice learning periods required for each practice-basedmodule(d) complete a portfolio of practice assessment for each practice learning period that is accepted bythe Examination and Assessment Board (EAB) as providing evidence that you meet the NMCstandards for pre-registration nurse education (NMC 2010)(e) not engage in behaviour that is judged by the EAB or Fitness to Practice Panel to be damaging ordangerous to either service users or other students or programme providers, or that creates anunacceptable risk to you or others.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q2.3 Failure to make satisfactory progress will lead to failure in the degree and deregistrationfrom the qualification.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q2.4 You must study modules in the order, if any, specified in the enrolment processfor your selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director for thequalification.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q2.5 If you are counting OU credit that was awarded before registering for thequalification or an award of credit transfer, or if you are changing your pathway within thequalification, the remaining credit must be studied in the order, if any, specified in the enrolmentprocess for your selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Directorfor the qualification.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q3 CREDIT REQUIREMENT<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q3.1 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> will award you the <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> if youhave a 360 credits from approved modules, provided that:(a)(b)(c)120 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU first level120 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU second level120 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU third level.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q3.2 <strong>The</strong> Senate may permit you to qualify for the degree if you satisfy the otherrequirements of the regulations and if you have 360 credits of which not less than 180 are fromsuccessfully completed OU modules, including 60 credits from the specified compulsory practicemodule at OU second level, 120 credits from the specified compulsory modules at OU third level andnot more than 180 are transferred credit.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q3.3 <strong>The</strong> credit for this qualification must include from <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> modules aminimum amount of credit that meets the conditions of General Qualification Regulations GQR 3.4,that minimum amount is 120 credits. If you already have an <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>BSc</strong> degree conferredwithout Honours, the minimum amount is reduced to 60 credits.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4 CREDIT TRANSFER<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4.1 <strong>The</strong> credit transfer scheme for the <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> isgoverned by General Qualification Regulation GQR6.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4.2 Any award of transferred credit towards the specified compulsory modules at OUfirst level will take the form of module exemption.revised JANUARY 2013 Q74 Page 2 of 4


<strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong><strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4.3 Any award of transferred credit towards the specified compulsory theory modulesat OU second level will take the form of module exemption.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4.4 Credit transfer is not permitted against the specified compulsory practice moduleat OU second level or against the specified compulsory modules at OU third level.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4.5 Any transferred credit must have been completed no more than 5 years prior toregistering for the degree.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4.6 <strong>The</strong> maximum award of transferred credit allowed towards the <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours)Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> is 180 credits.<strong>BSc</strong> –MHN Q5 HONOURS DEGREE CLASSIFICATION<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q5.1 <strong>The</strong> <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> is classified as follows:• first class• upper second class• lower second class• third class.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q5.2 For the purpose of classifying your degree, the <strong>University</strong> will use a minimum of120 and a maximum of 240 credits from your best grades on specified <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> modules atOU second level or higher. Of these, 120 credits must be from modules at OU third level. <strong>The</strong> classof qualification must be in accordance with the scheme of classification prescribed by the Senate.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q6 PROGRESS TOWARDS THE QUALIFICATION AND DURATION OFSTUDY<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q6.1 <strong>The</strong> OU credit required for the award of the <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong><strong>Nursing</strong> must be obtained during a period not exceeding 7 years from the date you register for thequalification. Any credit obtained from <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> study or transferred credit prior to registeringfor the degree is not included within this time limit. Any transferred credit obtained prior toregistering for the qualification is subject to <strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q4.5.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q6.2 <strong>The</strong> <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> can be obtained during the time thatthe degree is available. If the degree is approved for withdrawal regulation GQR 3.1.2 will apply.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q6.3 Credit from particular modules may cease to be countable towards the <strong>BSc</strong>(Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> at a specified point in time after their final presentation.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q6.4 <strong>The</strong> decision to award credit for each of the modules at OU first level is theresponsibility of the EAB. Apart from a resit or re-submission of the examinable component ofassessment, if you fail any of the compulsory OU first level modules you will be de-registered fromthe qualification. You must successfully complete the OU first level modules or have an equivalentaward of transferred credit to achieve NMC progression point 1 and to progress to the OU secondlevel modules.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q6.5 <strong>The</strong> decision to award credit for each of the modules at OU second level is theresponsibility of the EAB. Apart from a resit or re-submission of the examinable component ofassessment, if you fail any of the compulsory OU second level modules you will be de-registeredfrom the qualification. You must successfully complete the OU second level modules or have anaward of transferred credit against one or both of the theory modules to achieve NMC progressionpoint 2 and to progress to the OU third level modules.<strong>BSc</strong>–MHN Q6.6 On successful completion of the degree, the Department of <strong>Nursing</strong> ProgressionGroup will confirm that you can be recommended to the <strong>Nursing</strong> and Midwifery Council forrevised JANUARY 2013 Q74 Page 3 of 4


<strong>BSc</strong> (Honours) Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>eligibility to enter its register as a Registered Nurse and can also qualify for the <strong>BSc</strong> (Honours)Mental <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> if you have obtained:(a) 120 credits from the specified compulsory modules at OU first level, or an award of transferredcredit(b) 120 credits from the specified compulsory modules at OU second level, or up to 60 transferredcredits against the theory modules and the remainder from the compulsory modules at OU secondlevel(c) 120 credits from the specified compulsory modules at OU third level(d) are of good character and health.revised JANUARY 2013 Q74 Page 4 of 4
