CERTIFICATE OF HIGHER EDUCATION INMATHEMATICAL SCIENCESThis is a credit-based qualification.These regulations should not be read <strong>in</strong> isolation. It is important that you read them <strong>in</strong> conjunctionwith the follow<strong>in</strong>g documents:• General Qualification Regulations (Registered Undergraduate Qualifications)• Student Regulations• Module RegulationsThese regulations are available by go<strong>in</strong>g onl<strong>in</strong>e to the Open University ‘Essential Documents’ websiteat www.open.ac.uk/essential-documents and follow<strong>in</strong>g the l<strong>in</strong>k to Registration Documents.CHE–MS Q1 QUALIFICATION NAMECHE–MS Q1.1 The University <strong>of</strong>fers the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.Holders <strong>of</strong> this qualification are permitted to use the letters Cert HE (Open) after their names.CHE–MS Q2 REGISTRATIONCHE–MS Q2.1 To register as a student, you must satisfy the requirements set out <strong>in</strong> StudentRegulation OU 3. There is no academic entry requirement.CHE–MS Q2.2 To be awarded the certificate, you must be registered for it and have successfullycompleted all the requirements.CHE–MS Q2.3 You must study modules <strong>in</strong> the order, if any, specified <strong>in</strong> the enrolment process foryour selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director for thequalification.CHE–MS Q2.4 If you are count<strong>in</strong>g OU credit that was awarded before register<strong>in</strong>g for thequalification or an award <strong>of</strong> credit transfer, or if you are chang<strong>in</strong>g your pathway with<strong>in</strong> thequalification, the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g credit must be studied <strong>in</strong> the order, if any, specified <strong>in</strong> the enrolmentprocess for your selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Directorfor the qualification.CHE–MS Q3 CREDIT REQUIREMENTCHE–MS Q3.1 The University will award you the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong><strong>Sciences</strong> if you have 120 credits from approved modules provided that:(a) 60 credits are from specified compulsory modules at OU first level(b) depend<strong>in</strong>g on the pathway be<strong>in</strong>g followed, 30 credits are from a specified compulsory module atOU first level or from specified modules at OU first level.(c) 30 credits are from the specified compulsory module at OU second level.CHE–MS Q3.2 The Senate may permit you to qualify for the certificate if you have 120 credits, <strong>of</strong>which not less than 60 are from successfully completed specified OU modules and, depend<strong>in</strong>g on thepathway be<strong>in</strong>g followed, not more than 60 are transferred credit.revised JANUARY 2013 T14 Page 1 <strong>of</strong> 2


<strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>CHE–MS Q3.3 The credit for this qualification must <strong>in</strong>clude from Open University modules am<strong>in</strong>imum amount <strong>of</strong> credit that meets the conditions <strong>of</strong> General Qualification Regulation GQR 3.4;that m<strong>in</strong>imum amount is 60 credits.CHE–MS Q4 CREDIT TRANSFERCHE–MS Q4.1 The credit transfer scheme for the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong><strong>Sciences</strong> is governed by General Qualification Regulation GQR 6.CHE–MS Q4.2 Credit transfer is only permitted if the standard pathway is be<strong>in</strong>g followed, whenregulations CHE–MS Q4.3 to CHE–MS Q4.6 apply. Credit transfer is not permitted aga<strong>in</strong>st the‘Gentle Start’ pathway.CHE–MS Q4.3 Any award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit towards the specified compulsory modules at OUfirst level and OU second level will take the form <strong>of</strong> module exemption.CHE–MS Q4.4 Any award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit towards specified modules at OU first level given <strong>in</strong>regulation CHE–MS Q3.1 (b) will take the form <strong>of</strong> general credit exemption.CHE–MS Q4.5 The study considered for an award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit must have been completedwith<strong>in</strong> the 16 years prior to the University receiv<strong>in</strong>g your complete application for credit transfertowards this certificate.CHE–MS Q4.6 The maximum award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit towards the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Higher</strong><strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> is 60 credits.CHE–MS Q5 DURATION OF STUDYCHE–MS Q5.1 The OU credit required for the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong><strong>Sciences</strong> must be obta<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g a period not exceed<strong>in</strong>g 7 years, except where credit transfer hasbeen awarded, <strong>in</strong> which case the time to complete the OU credit will be less, as detailed <strong>in</strong> GeneralQualification Regulation GQR 6.13.CHE–MS Q5.2 The <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> can be obta<strong>in</strong>eddur<strong>in</strong>g the time that the certificate is available. If the certificate is approved for withdrawal, regulationGQR 3.1.2 will apply.CHE–MS Q5.3 Credit from particular modules may cease to be countable towards the <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Mathematical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> at a specified po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> time after their f<strong>in</strong>al presentation.revised JANUARY 2013 T14 Page 2 <strong>of</strong> 2
