What is Project Lead the Way(PLTW)?• PLTW is a not-for-profitorganization that promotes preengineeringcourses for middleand high school students.• PLTW forms partnerships withschools, higher education, andthe private sector to address anengineering shortage in the U.S.

Why is PLTW promoting engineering?There is a critical shortage of engineers and engineeringtechnologists entering the field at a time whentechnology is reinventing itself every few years.50% of the engineers in the USwill retire in the next 10 yearsSandvik Corporation 2012


Why is PLTW promoting engineering?• The hardest job to fill last year wasEngineering.• There are many fields of engineering andkids need support and guidance inselecting fields of interest.• Many other hard to fill jobs are intechnical fields.• There is a huge mismatch in skills of thosewho graduate from colleges.• Employers have jobs for those whohave the right skills.Forbes Magazine 2012


Why is district 211 promoting engineering?The Northwest Suburbs and the greaterChicago land area have tremendousopportunities in many fields of engineeringfor those who can get the right skills.We want to promote careers where weknow there is going to be significantgrowth.


PLTW National Organization- Started in 1997 - 98 in New York with 12 schools- Now in 50 States and England- Now in 1,300 schools- Current PLTW student enrollment is 175,000- Total number of students who have experiencedPLTW is 250,000- PLTW trained over 5000 teachers


Exposure To Real Engineering- PLTW classes are modeled after introductory engineering courses taught atuniversity level- Students gain first hand experience in different facets of engineering anddiscover where their strengths lie.- PLTW students are more successful in engineering majors and experiencehigher graduation rates.


PLTW Curriculum is“Standards Based”-National Academy of Sciences-National Council of Teachers of Mathematics-International Technology Education Association-English Language Arts


PLTW Course ProgramT202 Introduction to Engineering Design(IED)• All students must take T202 as is a corefoundation level class.• Student must apply for the programonline.

How Do Students Earn CollegeCredit?• Students interested in enrolling in two and four yearcolleges are eligible to earn college credit• Requirements include a “B” average and 70% orhigher on college credit exam (Section A and C)• Students may have to pay for the college credits.This may vary depending on the university.


District 211 Test Results• Last year over 400 students wereeligible to receive college credit.


Are students required to take thePLTW college credit exam?•No, however there is nodownside to taking the freeexam


Do All Colleges Accept PLTWCourse Credits?• Colleges vary in how they accept or recognizePLTW courses. Students should check directlywith the schools in which they are applying.• PLTW has agreements with a number of collegesthat will accept PLTW courses.• PLTW articulated credit is very similar to AP credit,refer to the Link on this page website individualarticulations.• We strongly encourage student to takeadvantage of the credit at RIT or at the Universityof Iowa since this is a transcripted credit.
