Men’s BasketballProgram History• Four-time Maryland JUCO ChampionsMen’s basketball is one of the oldestprograms at the College of Southern Maryland. In fact, men’s basketball predates the PhysicalEducation facilities. Prior to the La Plata CampusPhysical Education Center’s construction in 1974,teams would practice and play home games inlocal gyms throughout La Plata.CSM fielded its strongest teams in the mid-1980sunder Coach John Mappas. His teams went 100-23from 1983-84 to 1986-87. The Hawks won the NationalDivision in MDJUCO all four of those years. Since thatpoint, the Hawks have posted winning seasons sixtimes while playing in the highly competitive MDJUCOConference.2007-2008 Year in Review• Overall record: 4-23This past season was a growing experience forthe Men’s Basketball team at the College of SouthernMaryland. They began the year with a youthful, inexperienced squad that played hard every time out.By the end of the season they showed that a datewith CSM on the court was no easy contest. Thoughthey posted only four wins last season, they werecompetitive in every game. They lost ten games byten points or less, including a six-point loss to PrinceGeorge’s Community College in the Region XXtournament. In that game they took a nine-point leadinto halftime. The previous game, they took a one-pointlead into halftime on the road against ChesapeakeCollege in the MDJUCO fi rst round playoff game. Both of those teams went on to win the Region XXChampionship in their respective divisions. The Hawkswere also privileged to have one of their players wina post season award. Laron Mann was selected thirdteam All-Region XX for his accomplishments.

He alsowas selected third team All-Region XX last season. He came back this year in even better shape thanlast year and is ready to be a leader for this team. Also returning for the Hawks are forwards DominicCooper and Brandon Dukes. Dukes led the teamin rebounds last season. He is ready to bring hisenergy back to the court. Cooper returns ready toimprove his offensive game and continue to be adefensive stopper. This year’s team features severaltransfers. Saquan Brown, Brandon Jarman, JarredBlake, and Chris Brown are expected to contributeright away. With eight sophomores the Hawks arealready a more experienced team than last season. The freshmen recruiting class has great potentialto lead the Hawks in the next couple of seasons.Adding to an already deep backcourt are TroyCummings, Dashawn Stuckey, Mike Hinton, andSterling Doleman. All are expected to competefor playing time this year. At the forward positionthe Hawks have recruited a little more size thanthey had last year. Tyrone Walker, Thomas Young,Aaron Gwynn, Dennis Boyd, and Rashad Jones willbe playing the forward positions for the Hawks thisseason. This team is deeply talented.
