Coursework will be in theclassroom and nursing lab with supervised experience in a clinical setting. Medical Expense and Hepatitis B Waiver FormsAdditionally all students must complete the Pre-Check background process during the firstweek <strong>of</strong> class, instructions can be obtained for this on-line background process atwww.csmd.edu . Students are NOT eligible to participate in the clinical portion <strong>of</strong> the CNAcourse until these documents are completed. The college will not be responsible for anytuition, fees or other costs that may be incurred or lost due to incomplete, untimely orunsatisfactory background reports. Unacceptable backgrounds are determined by the clinicalfacility NOT the college.Course Structure:For classroom lecture a variety <strong>of</strong> instructional methods will be utilized in this course. Theseinclude lecture/discussion, role play, demonstration, return demonstrations, and audiovisualand computer based materials. Skills will be practiced in the skills laboratory. Clinicalexperience will be provided in a clinical facility under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> the clinicalinstructor. Also included in the course structure are two clinical skill review sessions (6 hourseach) in the week immediately preceding the NNAAP Examination.CPR training and certification are included in the course. Students are required to maintain acurrent AHA CPR for Health Care Providers or ARC CPR for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Rescuers throughoutthe entire course.Students are expected to participate in all course activities to include class discussions, practicesessions, and activities to develop the knowledge and skills needed to complete the course.Attendance Requirements:In order for students to meet the objectives <strong>of</strong> the course students must adhere to theattendance requirements as outlined below. Attendance in the CNA/GNA course is mandatedby the <strong>Maryland</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Nursing. The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> considers attendance inclinical and campus laboratory sessions to be an essential component <strong>of</strong> the student’seducation that is not easily duplicated; therefore, attendance in clinical and campus laboratoryis required.ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY AT ALL CLINICAL SESSIONS- Any unexcused absence in the classroom, lab or clinical setting will result in coursefailure.- Attendance is required for the entire clinical day or campus lab session to fulfill the courserequirements; this includes the required GNA skills preparation and NNAAP examination.2


- Failure to sit for the NNAAP examination as scheduled will result in an additional cost tobe incurred by the student to re-schedule testing session.Failure to attend the entire lab/clinical day (tardy or leaving early) may be determined as anabsence at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the lab/clinical instructor.- More than 1 absence in any setting could result in inability to complete/pass the course.- Orientation to a clinical facility is considered a clinical day and attendance is required.- Exceptions to the above policy statements based on extenuating circumstances may beconsidered on an individual basis and must be approved by the department.GRADING SCALE – CONTINUING EDUCATION STUDENTS:HTH 6270 HTH 6290CMP = Completed the course, met P = Satisfactoryrequired competencies andhas earned CEU’sF = UnsatisfactoryATT = Attended the course, noCEU’s awardedWD = WithdrawalCIP = Course in ProgressI = IncompleteGrading Policy:a. To receive an achievement award for successively completing the courses, the studentmust earn a course average <strong>of</strong> 80% or higher on quizzes, tests and examinations. Inaddition, the student must pass CPR training, the manual skills lab evaluation and performsatisfactorily in the clinical setting. Quizzes and tests given in HTH 6270 will be weighted asfollows:Test Average (4 total) 60%Final Exam 40%Manual Skills Evaluation PassCPR TrainingPassClinicalPassb. Skills Inventory Checklist: A skills inventory checklist will be maintained for each studentthroughout the course and will be updated regularly by the course instructor and/orclinical instructor to reflect exhibited competency in required skills. The form is “checked<strong>of</strong>f” either in the nursing skills lab or during clinical training. The completed checklist willbe maintained as part <strong>of</strong> the student’s permanent record.c. Quality and quantity <strong>of</strong> workInterpersonal skillsPr<strong>of</strong>essional conductSafetyTeamworkConfidentialityDecision making skillsTermination from the Course:A student may be terminated from the course for:• Inappropriate conduct that exhibits potential harm to clients or classmates• Breeches in confidentiality• Unpr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct in the clinical or classroom setting• Excessive absences• Cheating• Abuse <strong>of</strong> substances• Falsification <strong>of</strong> records• Consistently documented unsafe clinical practice• Unsatisfactory criminal background checkAny student showing cause for termination due to conduct violations will have a writtenconference form completed by the instructor and presented for the student to review and sign.Students have due process via the Student Code <strong>of</strong> Conduct & Student Judicial System as set forthin the Student Handbook.It must be emphasized that in the clinical area, students are GUESTS <strong>of</strong> the facility. Any problemsbetween students and facility personnel should be referred DIRECTLY AND IMMEDIATELY to theinstructor who will intervene in the situation. Students are not to involve themselves in problemsituations between facility personnel, physicians, clients, or visitors at any time for any reason.Any event in which the college administrator or facility administrator would recommend that thestudent be dismissed from the clinical situation will involve dismissal from the course if theinstructor sees the conflict as an unsolvable situation.Uniform Requirements:ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN AN OFFICIAL CSM STUDENT IDThese ID’s are provided FREE <strong>of</strong> charge (for the first time)to all students and MUST be worn at alltimes while in the healthcare facility.On Campus:Casual attire appropriateAt Clinical: Cleanliness and neatness must be maintained.• Ceil blue scrub top with CSM patch sewn to left chest pocket, CSM Student ID badge inthe badge holder visible at all times.• White scrub pants• White shoes with enclosed heels and toes, with white socks or stockings• Fingernails cleaned and filed short, clear polish no dark colors.• No jewelry is allowed in any pierced body part except for small stud earrings in the earsand wedding band• Watch with second hand4


• Small notepad• Pen & pencil• Only light cosmetics. Perfumes are not appropriate• Hair shall be contained from swinging freely and arranged neatly <strong>of</strong>f the face and collar.• Personal hygiene is expected.Confidentiality:Students will not discuss clients outside <strong>of</strong> appropriate learning situations such as a classroom,conference room or report. Students found guilty <strong>of</strong> breech <strong>of</strong> confidentiality will be subject todisciplinary action and/or dismissal. Students are cautioned that a breech <strong>of</strong> confidentialitymay result in civil litigationCNA Application <strong>Maryland</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Nursing:Upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> the Certified Nursing Assistant courses, students are eligible tobe placed on the <strong>Maryland</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Nursing’s (MBON) – Nursing Assistant Registry. Theapplication must carry a passport size picture and be accompanied by a money order for$20.00, a letter from the college verifying course completion, and a copy – front and back - <strong>of</strong>the completed orange background check form. Students have one year from the end date <strong>of</strong>the course to apply for their CNA certification.GNA Testing for Long Term Care Nursing Assistants:All nursing assistants working in long-term care facilities are required to take and pass the<strong>Maryland</strong> Geriatric Nursing Assistant Testing Service (MDGNATS) exam. The National NurseAide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam assesses the minimum competence <strong>of</strong> students toperform the job <strong>of</strong> a nursing assistant safely and effectively. There are two (2) segments <strong>of</strong> thetest to complete: written and manual skills. The application fee for the entire test is $95.00which is included in the cost <strong>of</strong> the course. All <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> Certified NursingAssistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant students are required, at the end <strong>of</strong> their course, to takethe Geriatric Nursing Assistant Exam (NNAAP). The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> CNA/GNAprogram provides students with 2 clinical skill preparation days in the week immediatelypreceding their NNAAP exam. Clinical skill preparation days are held on the La Plata campus inthe HT Building Room 728, attendance is mandatory.Long term care nursing assistants and CNAs who do not apply for Geriatric Nursing Assistantstatus within one year <strong>of</strong> completing the nursing assistant course will have to repeat the entirecourse to qualify for the test.Inclement Weather:For cancellation <strong>of</strong> classes, call the <strong>College</strong> closing hotline at (301) 369-1999 or 800-650-4023.(Evening classes may be canceled independently <strong>of</strong> day time classes.) Do not attend clinicalsessions if the college is closed.
