<strong>Archmere</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Library</strong> PoliciesThe <strong>Archmere</strong> <strong>Library</strong> supports and extends the intellectual life of the school. The <strong>Library</strong> provides aclimate which encourages and challenges academic interests, and offers a wide selection of materials.The <strong>Library</strong> program at <strong>Archmere</strong> prepares students to become educated, self-confident lifelong learners.HoursThe <strong>Library</strong> is open from 7:30am until 4:30pm Monday through Friday. The Librarian is available to assiststudents with reference questions, class assignments and research.Location on CampusThe <strong>Library</strong> is centrally located in St. Norbert Hall, the main classroom building of the school.The <strong>Library</strong> CollectionThe <strong>Archmere</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>Library</strong> collection currently numbers over 13,000 volumes. It also receives 80periodicals and eight daily newspapers. The <strong>Library</strong> has an extensive retrospective collection of printedperiodicals, as well as electronic databases that provide access to over 2,000 periodical titles.Loans & FinesBooks in the circulating collection go out for 21 days. Borrowed books may be renewed up to two times.Overdue book fines accrue at the rate of $0.20 per day. Students will be charged $25 for books that arelost.<strong>Library</strong> Atmosphere and ConductThe <strong>Archmere</strong> <strong>Library</strong> is the largest classroom in the school. Rules and appropriate behavior apply in the<strong>Library</strong> as they do in any other classroom. Students are expected to use the <strong>Library</strong> for study, research,and reading.The <strong>Library</strong> is a quiet oasis on campus. Students are asked to help preserve this silent study space by nottalking in the <strong>Library</strong>, except in rooms designated for group study. Other guidelines for students arelisted below.• Students may use the second floor of the <strong>Library</strong> to study only with permission from the Librarian.• Table seating is limited to four--unless your group obtains special permission from the librarian.• Computers are for individual use only.• Because food and drink can damage <strong>Library</strong> materials and equipment, there is no eating or


drinking in the <strong>Library</strong>.• About 5 minutes before the end of the period, please return books to shelves or to the book returncart, replace magazines and newspapers in the racks, put trash in wastebaskets, and finally push chairsback under tables as you leave. This ensures that the next students will be able to find what they need.• Please ask for help if you can't find what you need.• Students who hold conversations in the <strong>Library</strong>, or engage in conduct that may inconvenience,annoy, or offend other patrons, are subject to disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Handbook.Selection <strong>Policy</strong>The <strong>Archmere</strong> <strong>Library</strong> selection policy is intended to create a useful collection that supports thecurriculum. Books selected stress subject areas that are included in assignments from year to year. The<strong>Library</strong> provides both general and in-depth materials for these assignments.Skills DevelopmentStudents receive <strong>Library</strong> instruction at both the individual and class levels. Reference skills are taught asa class when specific assignments are made that involve research so that students have an immediateapplication of the instruction. Individual instruction is ongoing. The Librarian assists students in locatingand using appropriate information sources, both print and non-print.Gift <strong>Policy</strong>Gifts of books and other materials are accepted but without commitments as to the final disposition andwith the understanding that they are not necessarily to be added to the collection. The same criteria usedfor the selection of all other materials will be used in evaluating gift materials.Cooperatives<strong>Archmere</strong> has a cooperative student borrowing arrangement with Widener University <strong>Library</strong>. Forms areavailable at the Circulation Desk.Inter<strong>Library</strong> Loan (ILL)At times the <strong>Library</strong> may not have a specific item needed by a student. Materials not available at the<strong>Archmere</strong> <strong>Library</strong> may be borrowed from other libraries through an inter-<strong>Library</strong> loan. This is a freeservice. The length of time it takes to get materials varies but generally takes two to three weeks from thedate of request. Check with the Librarian for further details.Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty


Academic dishonesty of any kind is considered an extremely serious offense. Citations--both for quotedand summarized material-- should be used conscientiously. Questions about proper documentation ofsources should always be brought to either your teacher or the Librarian.
