Welcome to the first edition of the Financial Aid and Scholarship Bulletin for the Class<br />
of 2011. Throughout the year we will be e-‐mailing information about specific<br />
scholarships and financial aid to you, also posting on the <strong>Archmere</strong> website under<br />
Latest News and the Student Life, College Counseling section. Scholarship applications,<br />
that require transcript and/or recommendations, should be completed and returned to<br />
us at least two weeks before the deadline. We will package each with required<br />
signature and documentation.<br />
An excellent source of miscellaneous scholarships is the “Scholarship Compendium.” Extra copies<br />
are available in the Counseling Center.<br />

WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN AWARD<br />
Wedny’s Restaurants have teamed up with the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee to create<br />
the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. The award honors both male and femal high school<br />
students who excel in academics, athletics and student leadership. Your school can now<br />
have as many applicants as meet the eligibility criteria. Eligibility for application is<br />
limited exclusively to men and women entering their senior year of high school in<br />
the <strong>2010</strong>-‐2011 academic year sponsored sport.<br />
DEADLINE: October 3, <strong>2010</strong> - Completed online application for counselor review.<br />
Please let Mrs. Doyle or Mr. Mulhearn know if you’re interested and can have the application<br />
completed by 10/3.<br />

***RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM<br />
The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African American high school seniors<br />
who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically,<br />
exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and<br />
demonstrate financial need. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S.<br />
residents. Award recipients will receive $10,000 annually for four years, for a total of<br />
$40,000. The recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited<br />
four-‐year college or university of their choice.<br />

DEADLINE: November 1, <strong>2010</strong> (postmarked) -‐ Application will be considered for<br />
the Ron Brown Scholar Program and forwarded to a select and limited number of<br />
additional scholarship providers. Please make special note that students are still<br />
responsible for applying to all scholarship programs in which they are interested.<br />
January 9, 2011 ␣ Final postmarked deadline in order to be considered for only the<br />
Ron Brown Scholar Program.<br />
***PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS<br />
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes students in high school grades<br />
who have demonstrated exemplary community service. The online application form is<br />
available at http://spirit.prudential.com and www.principals.org/spirit . Students<br />
complete applications online, print them out and submit them to the College<br />
Counseling office by November 1, <strong>2010</strong>. Participating schools review applications and<br />
select Local Honorees, then nominate them for state-‐level judging. Local Honorees<br />
receive Certificates of Achievement and State Honorees receive $1000, an engraved<br />
silver medallion, and an all expense paid trip with a parent or guardian to<br />
Washington, D.C., in May. National Honorees receive an additional $5000 award, an<br />
engraved gold medallion, and a crystal trophy for their schools. They also will receive a<br />
$5000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a nonprofit charitable organization of<br />
their choice.<br />

***AES ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP<br />
This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post<br />
secondary educational facility. You are not required to be taking Engineering course to<br />
be eligible. Students must submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on<br />
the scholarship page of our website: http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm<br />

***DELAWARE ENGINEERING SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM<br />
The scholarship program is offered in conjunction with two other organizations: the<br />
Society of Women Engineers ␣ DelMar Section, and the University of Delaware. It is<br />
available to students who live in Delaware or attend a Delaware high school.<br />
Delaware Engineering Society - Joe J. Welker Memorial Scholarship<br />
$1500 to $2000 for freshman year High school senior who will enroll in<br />
Engineering Program at ABET accredited college/university for Fall <strong>2010</strong> Min.<br />
SAT scores: Math - 600, Verbal - 500, Writing - 500<br />
Society of Women Engineers-‐ DelMar Section Scholarship<br />

University of Delaware Engineering Scholarship<br />
$2000/yr, renewable for 4 years Apply for enrollment as a full-‐time student in<br />
the Engineering Program at The University of Delaware by December 15, <strong>2010</strong> NO<br />
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION OR ESSAY REQUIRED. All Delaware residents who<br />
apply for Fall 2011 freshman admission into the College of Engineering by<br />
December 7, <strong>2010</strong> will be considered.<br />

***COMCAST LEADERS & ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM<br />
The scholarship program recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for<br />
their commitment to community service, academics, and demonstrated leadership. To<br />
acknowledge these accomplishments, recipients of the award will receive a one-‐time<br />
grant of $1000. Only one senior from your high school may be nominated to apply<br />
for this award.<br />
Requirements:<br />
• Full time high school senior
• Student grade point average of 2.8 or higher.<br />
• Demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities or through work experience.<br />
• Strong commitment to and involvement in community service.<br />
• Plan to attend an accredited, nonprofit college, university, or vocational/technical<br />
school in the US<br />
• Be able to verify nomination by entering the Comcast School Code (CSC), provided<br />
by the principal or guidance counselor Employees of Comcast, its subsidiaries<br />
and affiliates, and their families are not eligible<br />

***HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM<br />
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. seeks to assist students<br />
who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of<br />
character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue education,<br />
and a desire to contribute to society. The state scholarships are made possible by the<br />
Michele Rollins Family. The Rollins family has a long history of supporting education<br />
in the state of Delaware. Through Michele Rollins’ leadership, $2M I funds have been<br />
donated to the Horatio Alger scholarships. 344 scholars in 44 Delaware high schools<br />
have been awarded since 2003. The eligibility criteria to be considered for all Horatio<br />
Alger National and State Scholarship Programs are as follows : be enrolled full time as<br />
a high school senior, critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per<br />
family is preferred), involvement in co-‐curricular and community activities, demonstrate<br />
academic achievement (minimum grade point average 2.0), be a resident and a citizen<br />
of the United States or be in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, intend to pursue<br />
a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution, and students must reside in the U.S. Students<br />
must submit an online application.<br />

***THE WILLIAM H. HEALD SCHOLARSHIP<br />
Scholarships are awarded annually to freshman entering the University of Delaware, and<br />
are renewable for an additional three years at the University. To be eligible an<br />
applicant must be a bona fide resident of New Castle County, DE and a male. At
least two scholarships are available to be awarded each year. The amount of the<br />
scholarship has varied over the past few years between $3,000 and $4,000 per<br />
recipient. Typically, the committee takes into account such factors as: financial need of<br />
the applicant, willingness of the applicant to live on campus and participate in all<br />
aspects of college life, recommendations of persons knowing the applicant well,<br />
secondary school academic record, and extracurricular activities of the applicant. This<br />
scholarship is renewable if recipient maintains an academic standing and exhibits good<br />
citizenship at the University.<br />
Students interested in applying for such scholarships should write before January 1st of<br />
the year in which they expect to enroll as a freshman to:<br />

***CREATE-A-GREETING-CARD SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST<br />
The Gallery Collection is offering students a chance to win $10,000 towards their<br />
education plus a $1000 for their school. Entering the contest is easy. Students must<br />
submit a unique photo, piece of artwork, or computer graphic for the front of a<br />
greeting card. The student with the best design will win a $10,000 scholarship and<br />
have his/her design made into an actual card to be sold in our line. See the website<br />

COLLEGE SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS<br />
***DANFORTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM at WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY The William H. and<br />
Elizabeth G. Danforth Scholars Program at Washington University in St. Louis is<br />
interested in students who stand out among their peers for their maturity, strong moral<br />
character, selflessness, and commitment to community. Students must exhibit a<br />
capacity for service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and who will<br />
embrace the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum. Please see Mrs. Doyle or<br />
Mr. Mulhearn by <strong>September</strong> 29, <strong>2010</strong> if interested. Return all nominations forms to<br />
Mrs. Doyle or Mr. Mulhearn.<br />

***EMORY SCHOLARS PROGRAM at EMORY UNIVERSITY<br />
***GOIZUETA SCHOLARS PROGRAM at EMORY UNIVERSITY<br />
Emory Scholars represent an impressive array of academic, cultural and extracurricular<br />
interests and achievements. Almost all have won distinction beyond the classroom,<br />
including national awards in music, languages, science, math and other fields. They’ve held<br />
various positions and played significant roles in community and volunteer programs.<br />
Goizueta Scholars have all the attributes listed above, but should demonstrate an<br />
interest in business through participation in entrepreneurial activities, internships,<br />
business related competitions and community service.<br />
<strong>Archmere</strong> can nominate up to four seniors for the Emory Scholars Program and 1<br />
for the Goizueta Scholars Program. Please see Mrs. Doyle or Mr. Mulhearn by<br />
October 25th if interested.<br />

***JEFFERSON SCHOLARS FOUNDATION<br />
The Jefferson Scholarships, to the University of Virginia, are granted to individuals on<br />
the basis of merit alone; financial need is not a consideration in the selection process.<br />
Students must possess exceptional ability in superior citizenship, leadership, scholarship<br />
and show promise of making a significant contribution to the University community as<br />
students and to society at large as graduates. Students must have a strong academic<br />
profile (winners typically have a 3.8 GPA or higher and above 1400 on the SAT’s). In order to<br />
permit each candidate to participate fully in the competition, the Jefferson Scholars<br />
Foundation does require as a condition of nomination that each nominee agree not to<br />
apply to a college or university under a binding early decision plan. However, any<br />
senior who wishes to apply under a non-‐binding early admission plan would be<br />
eligible to compete for and win a Jefferson Scholarship.<br />

***SAINT MICHAEL’S COLLEGE<br />
Saint Michael’s College, located just outside Burlington, Vermont, was founded in 1904 by<br />
the Society of Saint Edmund, originally a French order of priests and brothers. In the<br />
tradition of the Edmundite ministries, the college is offering the Edmundite
Scholarship, which is worth $20,000 over four years and will be awarded to a student<br />
who graduates from a Catholic high school and is admitted to Saint Michael’s College.<br />
DEADLINE: Application must be received by December 1.
