Sunny beach dayactivities include kayaking, Hobie Cat sailing,banana boat rides, stand up and paddleboards. During rough water days, campersand energetic counselors will boogie board atthe water’s edge or play games on the beachwhich include Newcomb, baseball, volleyballand kickball. On stormy weather days, campmoves indoors to the Lakeview Center forboard games, art, jewelry making and otherinside activities. Each session begins withlessons in water and boating safety. Instructionincludes proper fitting of a life jacket, introductorykayak instructions and how to safely ridethe banana boat and Hobie Catamarans. Kayak & SUP CampAge 10-14Find adventure on the water learning to paddlekayaks and stand-up paddle boards in bothLake Michigan and the Skokie Lagoons. Stafffrom Northwest Passage will combine structuredlessons and games with water and vesselsafety to create an educational and excitingenvironment. Instructors share their knowledgeof wind, wave and weather conditions to furthercampers’ safety and confidence on the water.The day starts with games to get everyonewarmed up. Next campers spend time learningessential gear and safety rules for the day’sactivity and then we head into the water withthe kayaks or SUP’s to apply the day’s lesson.Campers must be able to swim 50 feet. Eachcamper will be required to wear a personalflotation device at all times while in the water.Monday-Wednesday is kayaking (Wednesdaysmeet at Skokie Lagoons). Safety is our numberone priority. Lifeguard games, physical conditioning,free swim and respect for the lakeenvironment will also be part of the day. Participantswill gain valuable life confidence whenthey are in a beach environment. Participantsmust be able to swim 100 meters nonstopwith stroke proficiency (freestyle and breaststroke only). A swim test must be taken onthe first day of the program. Testing willbe held in the lake. A Junior LifeguardingCertificate will be issued at the completionof the program.
