FROM THE EDITORS
A milestone! You’re holding in your hand the second
annual spring issue of the Austin Beer Guide. Okay, so
we’re not really calling it that. Mostly we’re just excited
that this release marks one year of bringing this ragtag
publication to you, the Austin beer drinking masses.
We’ve seen a lot of growth in both distribution and page
count over the last year and we hope you’ve noticed
the updates and new features that each guide presents
compared to the last.
I suppose you could consider this the food issue.
It wasn’t intentional, but in the pages that follow you’ll
find a guide to local gastropubs (p. 10) and a recap
of our Franklin BBQ experience during our latest
Beer & Loathing outing (p. 22). We’ve even tapped
cheesemonger extraordinaires John and Kendall
Antonelli of Antonelli’s Cheese Shop fame to write our
Brewer’s Brain column (p. 62) this month.
This issue is definitely not the SXSW issue. We
decided early on to wait for that to come and go before
this release. And although we’re happy to see an uptick
in the amount of better beer happenings that have
popped up this year, we weren’t sure that our target
audience would be reached. Mostly we just weren’t too
fond of the idea of finding guides haphazardly tossed
amongst the mountains of emptied Lone Stars.
Lastly, on a personal note, this issue marks
another milestone - the four of us are now fathers. We’ve
all pooled our money and adopted a child from a country
we can’t pronounce. No, we actually all took the more
traditional route to fatherhood and with the latest addition
(Welcome, Hazel!) we have now become the guys with the
baby carriers and baby bottles at the Draught House on a
Sunday afternoon. Life is good.
