Draft 26/10/2004• Time consuming• Coach was a poor teacher• Too much pressure• Tired of playing• Need more study time• Coaches play favorites• The Sport was boringOver 35% of the millions of children who play youth sports quit after thefirst year of competition. 85% of the children who continue to play droppedout of organized sports all together between the ages of 10 and 17. Why arechildren quitting youth sports? The primary reason is that children are nothaving FUN. Additional causes for children to quit sports include anoveremphasis on winning by the parents and/or the coaches. The coach orparent yelled at the child for making a mistake. The verbal abuse associatedwith winning at all costs caused feelings of self-doubt. The child perceivedthat his or her abilities were not good enough too play so they quit. Thisperceived lack of ability creates low intrinsic motivation within the child.Their competitive flame was extinguished and consequently the child beganto use excuses for not wanting to play like: I lost interest, it's not funanymore, it's too time consuming, or I'm tired of playing. Coaches andparents compound these problems by singling out players for excellent playwith extrinsic rewards: most valuable player, all-star teams, best pitcher, etc. This degrades the average and below average players, plus adds competitivestress to the athlete who received the award. Children quit sports becausewinning is not everything to them, having fun is, and when the game is notfun, they lose interest. Getting children interested again after they quit canbe very difficult.PLAYER'S ROLE:Players who quit sports would consider re-joining a team if the followingwere implemented:GIRLSBOYS• Practices were more fun• There was no conflict with studies• Coaches understood players better• There was no conflict with social life• I could play more• Coaches were better teachers• Practices were more fun• I could play more• Coaches understood players better• There was no conflict with studies
