Phytochemical screening of ethanolicextract of M. oleifera revealed the presence ofsteroids, saponin, alkaloids, flavonoids andglycosides. Glycoside saponin was reported topossess mast cell stabilizing property. Flavonoidhas also been shown to possess smooth musclerelaxant and bronchodilator activity [9]; theflavonoids including apigenin and luteolin wereknown to inhibit basophil histamine release andneutrophil beta glucuronidase release, andthereby possess in-vivo anti-allergic activity. These flavonoids also inhibited the histaminerelease induced by 48/80. Hence anti-asthmaticactivity of ethanolic extract of M. oleifera maybe due to presence of flavonoid or glycosidesaponins. Present study revealed that ethanolicextract of M. oleifera stabilize horse serum andtriple antigen induced mast cell and inhibitrelease of histamine in anaphylactic reaction andpossesses anti-allergic action. In conclusion, ethanolic extract of M. oleifera are effective intreatment of asthma as it shows anti-allergic andmast cell stabilizing potential.
