Bill’s Notes
What a fun time we had sending Pastor Judy off as she re-retires
and moves to Pittsburgh. Over 200 attended the combined worship
and dinner on April 29 th .
For the 2 months between Judy’s leaving and Jamie Norwich
McLennan’s coming different clergy and lay people will be
assisting me in the worship assignments.
Our US-2 Missionary, Kevin Huff, and his wife Marcia
will complete their assignment with us towards the end of June.
Between now and then, Kevin will lead worship at all 4 worship
services. After each worship service, there will be a reception
honoring and thanking them for their service with NVC. They
will be returning to their home in the Washington, D.C. area.
As you know Pastor Jamie will come in as the full-time
pastor and I will move to part-time. As with Judy, Jamie and I
Ш
will function as co-pastors, each of us doing the things that best
match our interests and strengths.
Since I am moving to part-time, there will be a retirement
ceremony and reception for all of the retiring clergy and spouses
at this year’s Nebraska Annual Conference of the United Methodist
Church. You are invited to attend. It will be on Thursday, June
7th at 11:15 am in the sanctuary of St. Mark’s United Methodist
Church, 84 th St. and Pioneers Blvd.
On a different note, the Common Table of the Nebraska
Annual Conference has awarded NVC a grant for $35,000 for
2012. This is to assist us as we continue reaching out to underserved
persons in the Southwest Area of Lincoln.
I personally thank each of you in the New Visions Community
for your part in helping NVC to be one of the most exciting
places in the entire city. It is a great privilege to be associated
with this wonderful movement of Christ that we call NVC.
What a time to be alive! What a time to be a United Methodist
based in the Southwest Area of Lincoln. I’m sure glad I am.
With Jesus’ Peace and JOY! Bill
devotional time; how much time we will give in a service
ministry and so forth. Please return them during worship or
FROM UMCOR: The United Methodist
Moringa Magic – Sierra Leone: Charles Boyle
is known as “Dr. Moringa” in his community of Bo,
Sierra Leone. He promotes using the Moringa tree as a
nutritional food source, and he’s making a difference in
his community. Boyle first learned about this plant that
is rich in vitamins A, C, calcium, and protein through a
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Sustainable
Agriculture and Development training program
in Bo. After the training, Boyle planted Moringa trees
on his property and started sharing what he learned with
others. Today, Boyle earns about $160 a month selling
Moringa powder. He can now afford to care for his 17member
family and help pay for school fees. His
health has improved, too. “Moringa has made a difference
in my life. I used to be a lot thinner. Now, I am
healthier. People say I look younger,” said Boyle smilingly.
UMCOR - Be There. Be Hope: UMCOR's mission
is to alleviate human suffering-whether caused by
war, conflict, or natural disaster-with open minds and
hearts to all people.
Children and Mothers – Somalia: Civil war
has been raging without end in Somalia, and 2011
brought famine to much of the country in the wake of
the drought that afflicted the entire Horn of Africa.
This was assessed as the region’s worst food crisis in
more than half a century. In Somalia, UMCOR has an
established practice of collaborating with global partners
that are well-placed to work with the country’s predominantly
Muslim populations. A new grant from
UMCOR has just gone to partner, International Blue
Crescent (IBC), which among other projects is providing
monthly food packages, psychosocial support, and
care for severely malnourished children and mothers
with newborns residing in internally displaced persons
(IDP) camps. The new UMCOR grant supports IBC’s
efforts in an IDP camp at Korsan, near Mogadishu.
Through it, 500 children and 13 teachers at four primary
schools will acquire basic tools and equipment for
improved learning, including school kits, blackboards,
desks, chairs, playground materials, and school sanitation
and hygiene materials. UMCOR’s grant will also
support teachers’ salaries
Spring Storms - Midwest US: More than 100
tornadoes churned through nine Midwestern states in
mid-April, leaving a path of destruction, death, and
(continued in next column)
䘀
injury. specially hard hit were the towns of Norman
and Woodward, Oklahoma. In Woodward, six people
died in the storm, including three children. The severe
weather also destroyed 75 percent of the tiny town of
Thurman, Iowa. And in Oaklawn, Kansas, a suburb of
Wichita, more than 100 mobile homes were left in
ruins. UMCOR is in touch with the annual conferences
affected by the storms to offer support. United
Methodists across the region have sprung into action,
providing shelter at churches, distributing supplies,
and deploying early response teams where appropriate.
And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced,
sick or in poverty because of these and other natural
and human-made disasters, and for the workers who
minister to them.
Equal Exchange Items
Equal Exchange items available through Kathy
Hunter are part of the UMCOR Coffee Project which
means that UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on
Relief) receives a small portion of the profit on each
item. So far in 2012, $20,445.26 has been raised
through the UMCOR Coffee Project for the Small
Farmer Fund. Buying Equal Exchange products helps
at many levels beginning with the farmers in the local
as well as through the Small Farmer Fund.
Cathy Hayes Writes: “It's About Time”
We are all given the same number of hours in a day. We all have the same number of days in a week, weeks in
a year and years in a decade.
How often do we wish for more time. More time to do things we want to do. But, if we are given more
time, we tend to waste it. I witness so many people wasting hours staring at electronic boxes, just sitting and
doing nothing with the gift of time they were given, yet still complaining that there isn't enough time.
We spend time shopping. We waste time watching TV. We use time like a commodity. We try to put
more things into our time so we can waste time elsewhere. We eat while driving, text while walking, eat while
watching movies, make phone calls while people stand near us waiting for our attention. We rush ourselves so
that we can have more time to waste.
My thought is: why don't we GIVE time away? Donate time to those who need it. Sometimes just being
there near someone and giving them our attention is all it takes to show God's Love. When was the last
time you gave to someone? Just sat across from someone looked them in the eye and asked how they were,
and waited for the reply? As our world changes to more technology we are losing the face-to-face contact that
makes being human a joy. How can it be possible to pass the Peace of Christ if we don't even pass a glance at
each other?
I say "put down the remote, shut off the cell phone, turn off the computer, Put dinner on the table and look
your family in the eye and smile". Count the time you give to someone as a blessing. Be blessed my friends.
News from Kevin Huff
‘Yesterday I had the privilege of assisting a donor carry a box of gently used clothes to Harold’s closet. Upon
thanking her for the donation, she informed me that she was just “returning the favor”. Apparently, nearly 7
years ago, this woman lost practically everything in Hurricane Katrina. Upon arriving in Lincoln with very

little, she decided to visit “Harold’s Closet”. Here she was given – free of charge – shoes, clothes, blankets,
and household appliances that helped her survive one the most difficult periods in her life. ow, she was returning
the favor – donating to Harold’s Closet what had sustained her when she was in need. With abundant
joy and gratitude she thanked Mr. Harold Devries and his selfless staff for “being a blessing” to the
community. ’ - The ew Visions Community: Putting the Love of Jesus Christ into Action!
The 12 Step Process; May’s Step, Richard Haden
Step Five: Admitted to God and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
The Protestant Church has had an uneasy relationship with the idea of confession from the beginning of the
Protestant movement. Keith Miller in his book “A Hunger for Healing” says that, “Many Protestants believers
think that the Protestant Reformation is all about not having to confess anymore; that Calvin and Luther put a stop
to confession. But that is simply part of our delusion, the way the disease works. Luther and Calvin were both in
favor of confession; they were just against selling it.” The Protestant Church has often used communal, liturgical
confession as a part of its worship. But communal confession can become rote, and it is very generalized. We confess
to sinning, to breaking God’s law but we never get into specifics of our individual sin. That is not to say that I
don’t think that communal confession is of no value. I think it is extremely important we confess publicly, as a
body that is called to be Christ in the world, that we fall short of the mark.
We might say to ourselves that we have already confessed our sins to God, why do we have to do so to another
person? After all God already knows what we have done. I remember someone asking me one time if they could
share their fifth step with a comatose patient in a nursing home. I replied that that would be missing the point. As
Keith Miller puts it, “the person listening is not the object of [our] confession; God is. We need the other person as
a witness so that when our disease tells us that we didn’t really confess, and we start to get back into our guilt and
shame (as we often do after a solo, silent confession). Grace and Peace, Richard
VOICES UITED & WORSHIP CHOIR: April was both exciting and sad. We
welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem, ate our Seder meal together, witnessed His crucifixion
& resurrection, and had to send Pastor Judy on her way to her next adventure on life’s
journey. The music for ALL these events was utterly inspiring & beautiful. Voices
United truly came together in celebration! THANK YOU all for your extra dedication
during this busy, yet very important time of our Christian year.
We now focus on May, and the last month we function officially as the choir(s). Memorial Day weekend
(May 27 th ) is the last Sunday (8:30am) with the Worship Choir at Calvary, and May 20 th for Voices United at both
St. James & Southminster. Let’s join together for another musically inspiring month before SUMMER is upon us.
Keith Garrison had surgery on Thursday, April 26 th on his foot, and will be away from the “keys” for a
while.his recovery. Please keep Keith in your thoughts & prayers during Sue Stroud will be playing piano for the
St. James & Southminster services on May 6 th & 13 th . If Keith needs to still be away on May 20 th , we may also
have Sue for the Voices United “rotation”. We all wish Keith a speedy recovery. We also wish good health,
strength, & patience for Wendy during this time, too.
Vickie Cordell has been recovering from the deep pain of a cracked pelvis at Tabitha. Keep her in your
thoughts & prayers during her healing, and for her returning to the choir soon.
Please Mark Your Calendars for:
May 20 th is our last“rotation” date for the season, and that music will be rehearsed on the 1 st & 2 nd Wednesdays at
the Calvary site. New singers are always welcome to join with us! Hope to see you all there.
PRAISE TEAM: What a great journey we have all been on since August. Absolutely impressive!! He have
finally been able to “gel” as a group. What an awesome feeling=working as a TEAM. Now, as we look to the
SUMMER, it will be a bit different as we all take time for vacations, going “home” for the summer, and the up-
coming “outside service” in July. Thank you, all of you, 엸 for this wonderful “ride”.
TAIZÉ SERVICE OF PRAYER: Mark Your Calendars: The SUMMER TAIZÉ service will be July 22 nd ,
at the Calvary site. Come, relax, cool-off, and be one with God.
Flying High With United
Been up in the air lately? – as in a flight in a
jet airliner? If so, you might be interested in a bit a
history. A new book by Bob Taylor, titled, “The Man
Aviation History Almost Forgot,” tells of the role a
onetime Lincoln resident played in helping Orville
and Wilbur Wright make mankind’s first powered
aircraft flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C. December 17,
1903.
What Lincoln connection? Well, the Wrights’
mechanic was Charles E “Charlie” Taylor who
worked for a time in the bindery of the ebraska
State Journal, predecessor to the Lincoln Journal
Star. The Wrights’ first engine was not powerful
enough, so Charlie, years after leaving Lincoln, was
called upon to rebuild it. His mechanical skills paid
off for that successful first powered flight of 852 feet!
Here we are as United Methodists. The United
name carried over when the Methodists and the
Evangelical United Brethren merged. And guess
what! Orville and Wilbur Wright were the sons of a
bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.
United flies high in the skies and in worldwide ministries.
Welcome aboard!
UPDATES: Former Pastor KIM
SMITH served St. James from 2002 to 2003.
Paul and Kim moved to Hot Springs Village,
Arkansas in 2006. They enjoy the milder winters
but not the killer summers! Daughter,
Wyn, who lives in Lincoln, made Kim a
grandmother in Sept. 2010. Kim says they
return to Lincoln often and even have a small
condo at Pioneer House. They do lots of traveling
with their four kids living in different
places—Wyn in Lincoln, and Paul's children
in Seattle, San Francisco and Ligonier, PA
where they have 2 other grandchildren, age 7
and 4. Someday they might move back to
Lincoln. Beth Thomas.
