ACADEMIC REGULATIONSFORFOUR YEAR B.Tech. (Ag.) PROGRAMMECENTURION UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT,ODISHA


GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS1. ScopeThese regulations made here<strong>in</strong> shall be called “Academic <strong>Regulations</strong>” and will come<strong>in</strong>to force with effect from the Academic Session 2013 – 14.2. Duration of Curriculum & Calendar2.1 The duration of the B.Tech. (Ag.) programme is 4 <strong>ac</strong>ademic years. Whereas astudent is expected to complete this programme <strong>in</strong> a maximum duration of 8<strong>ac</strong>ademic years.2.2 E<strong>ac</strong>h <strong>ac</strong>ademic year is divided <strong>in</strong>to two semesters. The 1 st (Autumn) semester isdur<strong>in</strong>g the months of July to December and the 2 nd (Spr<strong>in</strong>g) semester is dur<strong>in</strong>gthe months of January to June.2.3 The duration of e<strong>ac</strong>h semester shall be of at least 90 <strong>in</strong>struction days exclud<strong>in</strong>gsemester exam<strong>in</strong>ations.2.4 E<strong>ac</strong>h year the University shall draw out a calendar of <strong>ac</strong>ademic & associated<strong>ac</strong>tivities, which shall be adhered to. The same is non-negotiable. Details ofcurricula & syllabi shall be as decided by the Academic Council with provisionfor modification from time to time as per the needs of the specializationsconcerned.3. Admission Requirement(i) In order to be eligible for admission <strong>in</strong>to the B.Tech. (Ag.), a student must havepassed +2 Science Exam<strong>in</strong>ations with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics withm<strong>in</strong>imum 50 % of marks <strong>in</strong> aggregate.(ii) A student should qualify <strong>in</strong> any national level /State Level/Centurion Universityadmission test and must have obta<strong>in</strong>ed a rank for the purpose of admissions.4. Admission and Registration of Students4.1 In order to be registered as a student of the University a candidate selected for admission<strong>in</strong>to any Course has to pay the follow<strong>in</strong>g fee and furnish the follow<strong>in</strong>g documents at thetime of admission.i. Academic Fees, Exam Fees, Admission Fees, Hostel Fees/Transportation Fees, Feefor food<strong>in</strong>g, any other fee as may be decided by the management.ii. Orig<strong>in</strong>al Rank Card of State/National/CUTM entrance exam<strong>in</strong>ationiii. 10 th Board Certificate & Mark Sheetiv. Intermediate Certificate & Mark Sheetv. Orig<strong>in</strong>al CLC/TCvi. Orig<strong>in</strong>al Conduct Certificatevii. Orig<strong>in</strong>al Migration Certificateviii. Caste Certificateix. Income Certificatex. Residential Certificatexi. Medical fitness Certificatexii. Blood Group Certificatexiii. Orig<strong>in</strong>al Money Receiptxiv. 6 nos. of Coloured pass port size photos


4.2 Provisional Registration4.2.1 A candidate, who for any reason, is unable to submit any of the documents, requiredunder Clause 4.1 may, with special permission of the Registrar, be admitted andregistered provisionally on payment of the prescribed fees, subject to production of thewant<strong>in</strong>g documents / certificates with<strong>in</strong> a stipulated period fail<strong>in</strong>g which admission willbe cancelled. A candidate, who could not submit the Migration Certificate at the timeof admission, must submit the same before appear<strong>in</strong>g the F<strong>in</strong>al Annual Exam<strong>in</strong>ation,fail<strong>in</strong>g which he/she will not be allowed to appear the Exam<strong>in</strong>ation.4.2.2 A candidate selected for admission <strong>in</strong>to any Course, fail<strong>in</strong>g to register <strong>in</strong> the prescribeddate, shall forfeit his/her seat and such seats shall be offered to other candidates <strong>in</strong> theWait<strong>in</strong>g List of subsequent date (s) of admission as notified <strong>in</strong> the admission notice.4.3 Provisional registration of cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g studentsA cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g student who cannot register on the prescribed date due to illness or otherunavoidable circumstances for which sufficient proof is to be given to the satisf<strong>ac</strong>tion of theDean may obta<strong>in</strong> provisional registration by pay<strong>in</strong>g the required fees by post or messenger onor before the prescribed date of registration. Such a student shall have to complete other aspectsof registration with<strong>in</strong> one week from the date of registration fail<strong>in</strong>g which his/her provisionalregistration shall be cancelled and all fees paid by him/her shall be forfeited.4.4 Late registrationA cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g student who does not register on the Scheduled date of Registration shall berequired to pay a late Registration Fee at the rate of Rs.100 per day.Late Registration as per Regulation shall not be permitted after seven work<strong>in</strong>g days from thescheduled date of Registration for any Semester.Provided that the Vice – Chancellor may <strong>in</strong> very Special Cases, permit late Registration with<strong>in</strong>the next 7 days on payment of a f<strong>in</strong>e of Rs.2000/- <strong>in</strong> addition to the Late Registration Fee as perRegulation. Thereafter <strong>in</strong> no case registration shall be permitted.4.5 University Registration CardA Student is issued University Registration Card after admission process. UniversityRegistration number cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be his / her Registration Number for all exam<strong>in</strong>ations dur<strong>in</strong>ghis / her tenure of study. This card is also essential for attend<strong>in</strong>g classes <strong>in</strong> a college andappear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ations. This is the MOST IMPORTANT document and the student musttake care of it. Duplicate University Registration Card will be issued only after recommendationby the Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal of respective college on pay<strong>in</strong>g the prescribed fee.4.6 Course – wise RegistrationAll registrations for a Course shall be done with<strong>in</strong> the stipulated period as will be notified fromyear to year or laid down <strong>in</strong> the Semester Calendar under the authority of the Academic Council.The date (s) of registration as notified or laid down <strong>in</strong> the Semester Calendar shall not bechanged under any circumstances without the approval of the Academic council.5. Institutions student advisement5.1 The newly admitted as well as the cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g students shall present themselves before theDeans/HoD of the respective Departments <strong>in</strong> the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of e<strong>ac</strong>h Semester on date (s)as prescribed <strong>in</strong> the prospectus, Semester Calendar or notified separately, for orientationand advice. The Deans shall assign the students <strong>in</strong> groups to different staff advisors.


5.2 The Advisor shall discuss with the students <strong>in</strong> detail assigned to him regard<strong>in</strong>g CourseCurriculum. Exam<strong>in</strong>ation system and various Academic <strong>Regulations</strong>.He shall ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> close cont<strong>ac</strong>t with the students and keep himself <strong>in</strong>formed of theirprogress <strong>in</strong> study by hav<strong>in</strong>g periodical meet<strong>in</strong>gs with them. One period per week may beallotted for such meet<strong>in</strong>g. The Advisor shall br<strong>in</strong>g to the notice of the concerned Deans,the problems of the students that required special measure.6. Course Programme6.1 E<strong>ac</strong>h subject prescribed <strong>in</strong> a Degree Course shall be formulated <strong>in</strong>to some discrete Coursesand spread over the number of Semesters prescribed for the Degree. E<strong>ac</strong>h Course shallbear a number (Course Number) and carry a certa<strong>in</strong> number of credit hours depend<strong>in</strong>g onthe weightage given to that Course <strong>in</strong> the Curriculum.6.2 All core courses and a certa<strong>in</strong> number of elective courses prescribed for a degree course,shall be compulsory for the students for that Degree Course.6.3 A Course Catalogue for e<strong>ac</strong>h Degree Course shall be prepared and will be available forsale. The Course programme/Curriculum of a Degree/Diploma Course shall not bechanged to the disadvantage of the students dur<strong>in</strong>g the Course of their Studies.7. Number and duration of classesi. The number of classes <strong>in</strong> a course per week shall be equal to the number of credit hours,allotted to that course.ii. The duration of a lecture/tutorial class shall not be less than 60 m<strong>in</strong>utesiii. The duration of a pr<strong>ac</strong>tical class shall be m<strong>in</strong>imum of 120 m<strong>in</strong>utes to a maximum of180 m<strong>in</strong>utes depend<strong>in</strong>g on the credits.iv. A theory class shall ord<strong>in</strong>arily consist of 60 students.v. A Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical/tutorial class shall ord<strong>in</strong>arily consist of 30 students per te<strong>ac</strong>her.8. Attendance criteria8.1 A student is eligible to appear <strong>in</strong> a semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation provided he/she pursuesa regular course of study <strong>in</strong> respective stream and attends at least 75% of classes <strong>in</strong>aggregate both <strong>in</strong> theory& pr<strong>ac</strong>tical subjects scheduled dur<strong>in</strong>g the semester. Theattendance is considered from the date of commencement of classes as per<strong>ac</strong>ademic calendar of the university. The schedule of classes is notified through aTime Table before the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the classes <strong>in</strong> a Semester.8.2 A student who is absent for short periods on health ground or due to participation<strong>in</strong> cultural, sports, other <strong>ac</strong>ademic/official assignments <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terest of the<strong>in</strong>stitution/college/university/government with prior written permission of the headof the <strong>in</strong>stitution/college is permitted a maximum of additional concession of 10%<strong>in</strong> attendance and is eligible to appear <strong>in</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ation with a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 65% ofattendance <strong>in</strong> aggregate both <strong>in</strong> theory & pr<strong>ac</strong>tical subjects <strong>in</strong> a semester.8.3 The m<strong>in</strong>imum attendance for In-plant tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 8 th semester is 85%.


9. Exam<strong>in</strong>ation Evaluation9.1 The University has a cont<strong>in</strong>uous evaluation system for e<strong>ac</strong>h theory, pr<strong>ac</strong>tical items. Forthis purpose the university holds the follow<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ations.9.1.1 End Semester Exam<strong>in</strong>ations at the end of the Odd Semester course work (1st/3rd/ 5th / 7th semesters)9.1.2 End Semester exam<strong>in</strong>ations at the end of Even Semester course work (2nd /4th / 6th / 8th semesters)9.1.3 Supplementary / Improvement Exam<strong>in</strong>ations of Even semesters at the end ofOdd Semester course work & exam<strong>in</strong>ations.9.1.4 Supplementary / Improvement Exam<strong>in</strong>ations of Odd semesters at the end ofEven Semester course work & exam<strong>in</strong>ations.9.1.5 Special Supplementary / Improvement Exam<strong>in</strong>ations of seventh and eighthsemesters, for the benefit of students who have completed the course work ofall eight semesters and have b<strong>ac</strong>klogs only from seventh and eighth semesters,after the declaration of results of eighth semester.9.2 Theory / Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical CoursesE<strong>ac</strong>h course unit shall be of 100 percentage po<strong>in</strong>ts. Three <strong>in</strong>ternal tests of e<strong>ac</strong>h theorycourse shall be conducted dur<strong>in</strong>g e<strong>ac</strong>h semester <strong>in</strong>ternally. The f<strong>in</strong>al external exam<strong>in</strong>ationwill be conducted at the end of the semester <strong>in</strong> which the course is offered. Sett<strong>in</strong>g ofquestions will be done externally. The pr<strong>ac</strong>tical will be conducted <strong>in</strong>ternally. 9.3 In-plant Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gThe duration of the In-plant Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 8 th semester is four months at differentEducational Institutes & Industrial Unit/Government Institutions with a weightage of 25credits. Under this programme, the students will undergo the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g as follows.i) Educational Institutes – 4 weeksii) Industrial Unit/Government – 12weeksInstitutionsTotal = 16 weeksStudents shall complete the record work based on daily field observation notebooks and weeklydiaries ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed by them. They will be evaluated by course coord<strong>in</strong>ator as well as by adesignated evaluation committee.9.4 Duration of Exam<strong>in</strong>ationThe duration of the exam<strong>in</strong>ation will be as follows:(a) Internal Theory Exam<strong>in</strong>ation– 1 hour(b) Internal pr<strong>ac</strong>tical Exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> the Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical Class– 2/3 hours(c) End Semester Theory Exam<strong>in</strong>ation for 30 Percentage po<strong>in</strong>ts– 2 hours(d) End Semester Theory Exam<strong>in</strong>ation for 60 Percentage po<strong>in</strong>ts– 3 hours(e) End Semester Pr<strong>ac</strong>tical Exam<strong>in</strong>ation – 2/3 hours9.5 Exam<strong>in</strong>ation PolicyThe section on Exam<strong>in</strong>ation Policy gives specific guidel<strong>in</strong>es and rules on the Exam<strong>in</strong>ation,expected Exam<strong>in</strong>ation Code of Conduct and the Discipl<strong>in</strong>ary Actions laid down for <strong>in</strong>cidenceof mal-pr<strong>ac</strong>tice dur<strong>in</strong>g Exam<strong>in</strong>ations.9.5.1 The schedule of classes shall be notified through a time table before the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g ofthe classes <strong>in</strong> the Semester. Attendance record will be compiled at the time of e<strong>ac</strong>h classtest and the students with poor attendance will be <strong>in</strong>formed through notification. Theguardian may be <strong>in</strong>formed through a letter. Letters will be issued to the student and theguardian before he/she is debarred for appear<strong>in</strong>g at University exam<strong>in</strong>ation due toshortage of attendance. University has to be <strong>in</strong>formed about the percentage ofattendance before start<strong>in</strong>g the exam<strong>in</strong>ation.9.5.2 A student shall be admitted to any exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> a subject only if he / she hasregistered for that subject and paid necessary registration and exam<strong>in</strong>ation fees<strong>in</strong> the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the semester.9.5.3 A student will be allowed to appear <strong>in</strong> the Semester Exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> those theorysubjects where his/her attendance is not less than 75% <strong>in</strong> case he/she does not have 65%overall attendance for condonation as per the Clause 8.9.5.4 Students, who are deta<strong>in</strong>ed from appear<strong>in</strong>g at the end-semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation dueto shortage of attendance, have to register for that course once aga<strong>in</strong> and appearat the subsequent exam<strong>in</strong>ation to obta<strong>in</strong> a pass<strong>in</strong>g grade.


9.5.5 A Student shall be allowed <strong>in</strong> a Semester Exam<strong>in</strong>ation only after he/she is issued anAdmit Card for the relevant exam<strong>in</strong>ation by the college. The college shall obta<strong>in</strong> writtenclearance on eligibility from the University.9.5.6 Students who have been found to <strong>in</strong>dulge <strong>in</strong> malpr<strong>ac</strong>tice dur<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ation will beawarded ‘M’ grade <strong>in</strong> that subject. The university may take any additional discipl<strong>in</strong>ary<strong>ac</strong>tion at its discretion. Such candidates will be allowed to appear <strong>in</strong> subsequentexam<strong>in</strong>ations based only on the decision of the University.9.5.7 A student who is absent <strong>in</strong> any subject(s) for which he/she has registered will beawarded ‘S’ grade. He/she is permitted to appear <strong>in</strong> those subjects <strong>in</strong> subsequentsemester exam<strong>in</strong>ations after the due permission from the respective College andUniversity.9.5.8 A student may register to appear <strong>in</strong> a semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation which she/he has alreadyappeared and passed / failed for improv<strong>in</strong>g his/her marks with a fee. However suchf<strong>ac</strong>ility is available only for the external end semester exam<strong>in</strong>ation. The higherof the marks of the two results will be taken <strong>in</strong>to <strong>ac</strong>count. There will be no baron number of attempts a student can make for improvement of his grade.9.5.9 There is no repeat test / exam<strong>in</strong>ation if a student is absents for any of the Internal test/exam<strong>in</strong>ation for any reason what so ever.9.5.10 All <strong>in</strong>ternal marks will be carried forward both for b<strong>ac</strong>k paper and improvementexam<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>in</strong> the case of theory courses.9.5.11 In the case of failure <strong>in</strong> a pr<strong>ac</strong>tical/ sessional, the candidate is given the chance10. Grad<strong>in</strong>g Systemto improve his grade and obta<strong>in</strong> a pass<strong>in</strong>g grade by conduct<strong>in</strong>g additional work/ experiments as prescribed by the department.10.1 University has adopted a 10 po<strong>in</strong>ts Grad<strong>in</strong>g System <strong>ac</strong>cord<strong>in</strong>g to theperformance of a student <strong>in</strong> all subject items. Whereas Grade C is the pass gradefor e<strong>ac</strong>h pr<strong>ac</strong>tical, project, sem<strong>in</strong>ar, In-plant tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and CSR(Cultural,Sports and Socially Responsible) <strong>ac</strong>tivities.10.1.2 A Candidate is deemed to clear (pass) a theory paper if he/she securesM<strong>in</strong>imum ‘D’ grade <strong>in</strong> the Internal and End Semester exam<strong>in</strong>ations takentogether based on “Normalised Grad<strong>in</strong>g System”.


10.2 Grade Po<strong>in</strong>t IndexA student’s level of overall competence is measured by a GRADE POINT INDEX asspecified bellow:SGPI – Semester grade po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>dexCGPI – Cumulative grade po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>dexThe SGPI is calculated based on the prescribed subjects of a semester asSGPI = ∑Ni=1 C i∗P i∑Ni=1 C iThe CGPI is calculated based on all subjects up to the end of a particular semesteras CGPI= ∑Ni=1 C i∗P i∑Ni=1 C iWhere,Ci = Credits assigned to a subject item as <strong>in</strong>dicated by the Course structurePi= Po<strong>in</strong>t correspond<strong>in</strong>g to a grade, obta<strong>in</strong>ed by a student <strong>in</strong> that particular subjectN = Number of subjects taken up to the end of a semester11. Declaration of Result & Promotion11.1 In order to pass a programme / course, a candidate must secure at least a passgrade as def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Clause 10.1 <strong>in</strong> e<strong>ac</strong>h of the theory, pr<strong>ac</strong>tical, project andsem<strong>in</strong>ar items.11.2 The promotional status between two consecutive semesters and/or twoconsecutive levels / years shall be <strong>in</strong>dicated on the semester grade sheet,which carries the remark “promoted to next year”, as the university has norestriction on the number of b<strong>ac</strong>klogs to be carried.11.3 The SGPI of the semester shall be updated after the candidate clears thesubjects <strong>in</strong> which he / she has failed at a subsequent exam<strong>in</strong>ation.11.4 The University shall publish a list of all successful candidates of e<strong>ac</strong>h of thesemester exam<strong>in</strong>ations with<strong>in</strong> the date prescribed <strong>in</strong> <strong>ac</strong>ademic calendar.11.5 The overall performance of a successful candidate for the award of a degreeshall be based on the comb<strong>in</strong>ed results of all the exam<strong>in</strong>ations of theconcerned programme.12. Eligibility for award of Degree CertificateThere shall be no class / division awarded to a student either at semester or degree level. Acandidate will be eligible for the award of B.Tech. (Ag.) degree if he / she satisfies all thefollow<strong>in</strong>g conditions:a) Has cleared all subjects with at least Pass grade as per the Clause 10.1.1 and theoverall CGPI should be at least 5.b) Has obta<strong>in</strong>ed at least Pass grade <strong>in</strong> CSR <strong>ac</strong>tivities (i.e. NCC/NSS/Games/Sports/Music/Debate/Quiz/Yoga) as per the Clause 10.1.1 dur<strong>in</strong>g the study period.c) Earn a satisf<strong>ac</strong>tory performance report <strong>in</strong> the Internship / Field Study Programme.


d) Has no due to the University / Library / Hostels / Transportation etc.e) Has no discipl<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>ac</strong>tion pend<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st him / her.13. General13.1 The <strong>ac</strong>ademic regulations should be read as a whole for the purpose of<strong>in</strong>terpretation.13.2 In case of doubt or ambiguity <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terpretation of the above regulations, thedecision of the Vice-Chancellor is f<strong>in</strong>al.13.3 The University may change or amend the <strong>ac</strong>ademic regulations or syllabus atany time and the changes or amendments made shall be applicable to all thestudents with effect from the dates notified by the University.13.4 Where ever not explicitly mentioned, the guidel<strong>in</strong>es of the B Techprogrammes of the University for the same <strong>ac</strong>ademic year shall apply.
