It was awesome to see and inmy wishful heart I would love to have that kind of budget to work with onone of my projects!! It gave me the impression that each owner/builderwanted to see how much more they could incorporate into their Hotel thanthe last one built. I was in awe of the architecture and like a little girl in acandy shop looking at all the details so carefully included in each designconcept. We also took time to visit the new Las Vegas Design Center. Wow!! It isan awesome place. The wall of water is something to see as you walk intothe lobby. I recommend a trip there when you can!! It is well worth it. Thefuture of that complex is going to be a source for all Designers as they add somany other venues for them to use in their business. To sum it up… I went to Stone Expo and didn’t come home with any newideas to incorporate into my designs using natural stones, but I did comehome encouraged to see how much Interior Design means to the future.Keep updated on the conferences that are happening in Las Vegas by loggingon to the ASID Website.www.asidocc.org12Design Orange County

Community Service Project – Human OptionsBy Adriel Cogdal, ASID, CIDYou know that lovely feeling you get when a job is complete; it turned outwell and despite a few bumps in the road it was a positive experience foreveryone? I am basking in that glow right now and assimilating theessence of a job well done and very appreciated. The completion of our ’04-’05 Community Service Project for HumanOptions was celebrated on October 12 with a private party at the shelter. Inaddition to the designers and contractors who attended, invitees includedthe Board of Directors of Human Options and Vivian Clecak, the founder.Human Options is an organization committed to breaking the cycle ofdomestic violence and assisting women and children to find safety in theirlives. In 1981, with three dedicated Board members, Vivian Clecak starteda hot line for abused women and children and began working in the basementof a church educating people, raising funds and finding safety andsupport for hotline callers. A year later, in 1982, the first Human Optionsshelter opened with eight beds. Several years later they moved to their presentand much larger location that has seen a great deal of use by families desperatelyneeding help. A year ago they contacted us asking for assistance inrefurbishing the public areas that were very worn.Designers for project - Marion Taylor, Allied Member ASID, Adriel Cogdal, ASID, BridgetRaney, Allied Member ASID; not shown in photo Traci DeVore Allied Member ASID, TerriHall, Allied Member ASID, Cathie Corey, Allied Member ASID, Linda Lubash, AlliedMember ASID.We were also fortunate to have a team of contractors who workedaround our time schedule and special requirements, and in many instancesexceeded their contractual requirements. In addition some contractors wentbeyond the call of duty by volunteering their time and/or services. A list ofthese guardian angels is available in our LDC office or from me.The Board of Directors of Human Options is now inspired to begin theirfund raising efforts to continue with the second phase of this project whichwill include ten bedrooms and eight bathrooms.Adriel Cogdal, ASIDCommittee Chair; SheilaHupp, ASID President2004-2005The project of remodeling the living room/dining room, kitchen and powderroom began with the replacement of the floors with new porcelain tile andnew carpet. The walls went from white to a cool, comfortable, calmingblue. All the furniture was replaced with new custom made pieces usingstrong stain resistant, but oh, so comfortable, chenille fabric. Blinds werereplaced with cell shades (and child-proof openers) and a valance topped itoff. The dining room tables, one of which was literally sagging in the middle, were replaced with commercial conference tables and sturdy new chairs. Allkitchen appliances were replaced, as were the faucets. The Corian countertops were refurbished and the cabinets were stained a darker color to coordinatewith the dining table and then given new hardware. The diningroom received a chandelier and the living room a ceiling fan/light. New doorswere added to a previously open entertainment center in the living room andnew end tables, lamps, pillows and art work were the finishing touches.I am currently putting together a list of designers who would like to participatein this ongoing effort. Although a lot of groundwork is going on rightnow, we would like to have a designer each be in charge of the décor of onebedroom and one bathroom. I would also like to remind my colleagues thatthis is a funded project, thus the donation of your time and your talents iswhat is required. We are forecasting that the bedroom and bath project shouldbegin around April or May ‘06.If you have any questions please feel free to call Adriel Cogdal, Chair, ’05-’06 Human Options Project at (562) 989-8964 any time.ASID is committed to making a difference in the world and this HumanOptions project exemplifies the slogan “ASID is where design comes tolife.”I would like to acknowledge again the hard work of our designers: CathieCorey, Allied Member ASID, Terri Hall, Allied Member ASID, BridgetRaney, Allied Member ASID, Marion Taylor, Allied Member ASID, Traci DeVore,Allied Member ASID and Linda Lubash, Allied Member ASID.Click on ad for more information on this company.Design Orange County21

TITLE 24New Lighting CodesIf you specify lighting, you need to know the latest standardsthat went into effect on October 1, 2005Californians now have another factor to consider in their interior designwhen new building codes in lighting installation took effect in October. Allnew homes, as well as those being remodeled, will be subject to new buildingcodes that require 100% fluorescent lighting throughout the entire home.Incandescent lighting will be allowed only if the light is on a dimmer and amotion sensor, and then can only be 50% of the home's actual lighting.Fluorescent lighting is known to not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also provides a brighter light than traditional bulbs and a muchlonger lamp life, often up to 10,000 hours, as compared to the approximately6,000 hours of lamp life with traditional, screw-in bulbs.Note: In our Fall Newsletter, page 21, there is another article about Title24. For more information refer to the official website: www.energy.ca.govwhere you will find the new standards and code information. These new Standards became effective OCTOBER 1, 2005. To downloada copy of the new standards, go to www.energy.ca.gov/title24/2005standards/residential_manual.html. Click on #6 Lighting. InformeDesign® ReleasesImplications on Open-PlanOffice DesignHow to Make Cubicles Productive Workplaces Is ExploredClick on ad for more information on this company.InformeDesign® (www.informedesign.umn.edu) has released a new issueof the monthly newsletter, Implications, that delves into the design of openoffice spaces, particularly cubicle environments. Each issue of Implicationsexplores one major subject in relation to design and human behavior to helpdesigners take their work to the next level by infusing their designs withresearch-based knowledge.Implications is written by leading experts in the featured subject matter. This edition is authored by Guy Newsham, Ph.D., head of the Lighting ResearchGroup at the Institute for Research in Construction, National Research CouncilCanada (NRC/IRC). Newsham provides guidelines for designers so they maycreate office environments that increase employee productivity and improvethe company's bottom line.Newsham states that more than 40 million people in North America workin cubicle environments. Recent trends in the design of these spaces, however, are having a negative effect on employee satisfaction with their work environments.Cubicles are getting smaller and employees are being forced toface decreased privacy (due to lower panels between cubicles) and increasedvisual and acoustic distractions (also due to the lower panels). Therefore,Newsham recommends that designers consider lighting, privacy and acoustics, and ventilation and temperature when undertaking open-plan office designsto increase worker satisfaction and result it "lower rates of employee turnover, higher customer satisfaction, greater corporate commitment, better safetyrecords and improved earnings, all of which have a big effect on organizationalfinancials." In this issue of Implications, Newsham offers guidelineson optimizing open-plan office designs.Newsham has more than 15 years experience researching indoor environmentsand has published more than 100 articles on his work. Prior toleading the Lighting Research Group at NRC/IRC, he managed COPE (CosteffectiveOpen-Plan Environments), a multi-disciplinary investigation of cubicleenvironments. Newsham holds a Ph.D. in Building Science from University ofCambridge. He was recently appointed to the InformeDesign Technical ReviewBoard.InformeDesign is the first searchable database of design and human behaviorresearch on the Web.
