Dear Members,
As this issue goes to print some very exciting things are in the works for
the Orange County Chapter. A new slate of leadership is preparing to
rally our membership on a path filled with opportunity, education, and
a little bit of adventure. The industry is without question evolving and
as one of the nation’s largest chapters, Orange County is realizing the change of tide in a
very real way. Now is the time for innovation and revitalization. Our national leadership
team has embraced that concept and so have we. As a result, you will see a more business
driven and politically conscious methodology develop over the coming year. It truly has
never been a better time to be a member of ASID.
With this in mind, I encourage every member to invest in absorbing and relaying the abundance
of information that is passed along to you at a local and national level. There are so
many resources and so much information available exclusively to our members, but only
you can filter and utilize the benefits that suit your business best. I encourage you to visit
the national website regularly, read your chapter and national quarterly newsletter, and
most importantly participate in chapter events and programs.
Membership Director
Audrey Duncan, Allied ASID
Over the past couple of months, I have connected face to face with chapter leaders from
across the nation as well as the new ASID National Executive Team and Board of Directors.
The energy among the entire organization is nothing short of spectacular and in a word,
contagious. That same energy has trickled down to the chapter level and was clearly evident
at our recent Southern California leadership training. You can read more about that in this
issue.
In closing, I want to acknowledge the many dedicated and active members who make up
the Orange County Chapter. Year after year you make the decision to engage, support,
and participate. My own decision to be a part of ASID stemmed directly from the value
exhibited by some long time chapter members, many of whom have become great friends
and valuable business allies. Thank you for influencing me and so many others who are
now part of an organization that benefits our industry in so many ways.
Cheers.
Leadership Training
By Monica Olson, Allied ASID
2012 ASID OC Communications Director
Our incoming 2012/13 term Board of Directors attended the Board Leadership
Training program in July at the Aliso Creek Hotel and Golf Course in Laguna
Beach. Surrounded by gorgeous views and a welcome breakfast to get us
going, we spent two days of intensive training with five other Southern
California Chapters. Collaborating with these Chapters and our “Event”
hosts awarded us with exciting ideas for new programs such as a "Bowling"
day and the "Home Tour" to be held in May, along with better forms of communication.
Capping off a full day of discussions and a presentation by speaker
Mark Silverman on Positive Reinforcement, we were treated to a delicious
meal at the SubZero showroom in Costa Mesa. We strive to continue the
successful leadership of our Chapter and ensure fun and productive meetings
Design Meets Technology
By Michelle Baker,
Crestron Showroom Manager
Home Automation Done Beautifully
Could you ever get through your day without touching some form of technology,
such as a cell phone, iPad® or TV?
Technology is part of our daily routines. From the minute we wake up, we
interact with technology – everything from the alarm clock to light switches,
cell phones, flat screen televisions to computers and smart phones. All of these
devices provide streamlined and simplified ways to manage our busy lives,
homes, schools, offices and global enterprise.
Your clients are no different. They are interacting with technology more than
ever before.
Technology Incorporated into Design
Clients expect you to consider their technology needs in the design phase.
Even though your disciplines may seem worlds apart, your collaboration with
the interior technology designer, also known as the systems integrator, and
their teams are essential, and can be greatly successful, differentiating your
design skill set and growing your business.
What is interior technology? It’s when electronic and digital products or
systems are applied within a space to shape the experience of a built interior
environment. In other words, it’s the use of technology inside homes and
buildings. An interior technology designer creates, installs, programs, maintains
and services the system.
There have been cases where the interior designer and systems integrator
haven’t worked together as a team. As a result, the client may end up with
unsightly banks of switches or TV’s and speakers not placed in the best
location to balance aesthetics with functionality.
Crestron, the leading manufacturer of control and automation solutions,
acknowledges the important relationship between the architectural and design
communities and interior technology designers. The company’s Interior
Design Partner program provides interior designers with tools and resources
to seamlessly incorporate technology into design, as well as a host of other
benefits and rewards.
The partner program includes a network of interior technology designers
who understand design and partner with the project’s entire design team.
They are geared to listen, work with designers, and come up with creative
solutions that result in a happy client and referrals for the whole team. So in
the case of the TV overpowering the wall,
the interior technology designer may
recommend putting the display behind a
tapestry or installing a mirror TV to uphold
the sophisticated design of the room, while
still being functional when the homeowner
wants to watch TV.
When Design Meets Technology, it achieves
the reality that automation can be done
beautifully. It acknowledges that designers
do not need to become a technology expert.
You don’t need to know if it’s HD, wireless,
in the cloud, or iTunes®-ready. It’s about educating your client to explore
ways to enhance their lifestyle with interior technology. It’s best achieved
when collaboration takes place as early as possible. The ultimate goal is that
the designer’s vision is not only maintained, but enhanced. The main benefits
are aesthetics, convenience, energy savings, and safety and security.
User Interfaces & Apple Integration
User Interfaces are how the client interacts with interior technology. The
more traditional interfaces are light switches, thermostats, and remote controls.
Each type of interior technology offers its own user interface. Without seamless
integration, the end result is wall and table clutter that is unpleasing to
the eye and difficult to use. Some designers have even admitted to editing out
technology from their project portfolio. We might think a light switch is simple,
but when there are many of them together in one spot, it can be confusing.
By incorporating a single six-button keypad, the client has an easy way to
set the ambiance of the room for entertaining or reading, etc. User interfaces
are the number one element that designers can provide guidance and encourage
clients to consider when designing a project.
The iPad/iPhone® and Android devices are becoming a popular type of user
interface. Many people say “my 5 year old can pick it up and just use it,” so
they are fascinated by its capabilities. Crestron has an app that enables clients
to stay connected to their home or office when they’re on the go.
Team Work
Designers should kick start the team building early in the project with a faceto-face
meeting, and include interior technology designers, architects, lighting
designers, engineers, and relevant sub-contractors. Align yourself or your
firm with a top interior technology designer in your area whose work you
know and trust. Don’t ever be intimidated by technology or afraid to ask questions.
Take advantage of education and advice from these specialists and manufacturers
such as Crestron.
At the end of the day, it’s all about collaboration. The entire design team is
often surprised by what is possible and ultimately the client’s needs are not
only met, but exceeded.
May General Meeting at California Closet
By Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID
2012 ASID OC Programs Chair
Our May ASID Orange County General Meeting was held at California Closet
in Huntington Beach.
The helpful and knowledgeable staff of California Closet walked the attendees
in small groups around the showroom and explained about all their
various products and organizing options. After the little tour, a couple of
glasses of wine, appetizers and delicious dinner, it was time to start the program.
Speakers for the night: Ilia Anossove and Anatoly Valushkini
Char Cowan, ASID OC
Chapter President
welcomed the guests;
later the speakers of the
night, Anatoly Valushkin
and Ilia Anossov from
iLA Designs offered a
CEU on True (Buon)
Fresco: Introduction for
Interior Designers, which
covered the history of
fresco as “The Mother of
All Arts”, and educated
our members on what
buon fresco is. We discovered
fresco is a true green
Kerry Anderson and Steve Huang
and organic art form,
reviewed the techniques, materials, pigments, plasters and textures and how
it can be used in contemporary interior design.
We would like to thank California Closet, especially Todd Jones and Janet
Hutchinson, for hosting a wonderful event and, as always, we would like to
give our appreciation to Kerry Anderson from AudioVison for all his AV help
and set up!
Let us orchestrate
your dream.
For the perfect products for your kitchen or bath,
the largest range of quality brands, a symphony
of ideas, and trained product experts to help
ASID OC Home Tour
Call for Entries
The ASID OC Home Tour has been re-scheduled to May 2013. While that
may seem like a very long time from now it is really just around the corner in
so many ways. Our goal is to have the featured homes and designers locked
in no later than December of this year to maximize advertising and promotions
– that’s only four months away!
We’re looking for 6-8 homes in Orange County to be featured in the Home
Tour. You may submit a client’s home or your own home for consideration.
We will consider re-models and new construction and it does not have to be
a whole home. Our goal is to deliver a diverse collection of homes and design
styles which reflect the equally diverse talent of our ASID Orange County
designers.
This is an amazing way to promote your business to the public, and an even
better way to show off your collaboration with our amazing Industry Partners,
whose products and services help make our design projects the very best they
can be. For more information and to be added to the interest list contact the
Emerging Professionals: Trip to the Plexi Gallery
By Rona Graf, Allied ASID,
2012 ASID OC Emerging Professionals Chairperson
The Plexi Gallery hosted a very informative and beneficial meeting to the
Emerging Professionals group in July. Maria Deganis, co-partner of the Plexi
Gallery, hosted the event and has been catering exclusively to the trade for
over 20 years. Maria wowed the group with everything that her company
offered and explained how working with a custom framing company can be
a huge asset to the designers’ businesses. The Emerging Professionals learned
that by working with the Plexi Gallery they would have access to a multitude
of services, such as custom art framing, assisting in selection
of art or prints, to preserving and showcasing any pieces in
plexi-glass.
This event proved to be a huge success in not only networking,
but allowing our newly integrated designers in this field to
further expand their knowledge and list of resources with
Industry Partners that they have available to them right in
their backyard.
A special thank you to Maria and Jeff at the Plexi Gallery for
the fabulous lunch and the intimate round table discussion
for some of our ASID members that are at the beginning of
their journey in the design world!
June General Meeting at Fixtures Living
By Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID
2012 ASID OC Programs Chair
What better way to enter a multi-award winning and LEED Silver Certified picture perfect showroom and be greeted
with a big smile and a nice drink? That is how guests and visitors were treated at Fixtures Living in SoCo where we
had our June ASID OC General Meeting.
Fixtures Living showroom is eye-candy to those interested in kitchen and bath design. The staff is knowledgeable,
pleasant and friendly, and they gave tours of the showroom to small groups of attendees. We would like to thank
everybody at Fixtures Living for hosting an incredible event, especially Breann Kay, the event coordinator.
After a few ASID announcements by Char Cowan, our ASID OC Chapter President, and a short presentation by
Fixture Living, the speaker of the evening started the program. Attorney, Kim Schumann, Esq. a Partner at Schumann
& Rosenberg, LLP, a Costa Mesa law firm specializing in business and civil litigation, insurance defense and family
law, talked to us about the topic of "You just landed
your dream job - What NOT to do next...".
Darla Blake and Michele Prata
The crowd at Fixture Living
Kim Schumann is ASID OC's General
Counsel who emphasized the importance
of a contract and key elements of a good
contract, what to do to avoid litigation,
how to proceed if you feel you are at risk
of being sued, the importance of having
insurance, and some real life case studies.
He ended the program with answering
the crowd’s many questions! Thank you
Kim for your patience and all the useful
information!
NEW CEU Reporting System:
ASID Members Now Report
CEU Credit Online at
IDCEC’s Online Registry
By Gigi Harris, Allied ASID
Professional Development Director, ASID Orange County
On July 9, 2012 IDCEC launched its new online Continuing Education Registry.
All design practitioners (“learners”) who belong to ASID or IIDA and are
required to fulfill the continuing education requirement are assigned a unique
IDCEC number. They can use the central online registry to report attendance
and obtain an official transcript of their CEU activity. Use of this registry is
free for all learners who belong to ASID and IIDA.
Effective October 1, 2012 ASID Orange County will begin tracking CEU attendance
by requesting members to sign in on an attendance record, and provide
your 10-digit IDCEC identification number on the attendance roster. Please
bring your IDCEC number to the CEU event to receive credit for this class.
We are required to turn in attendance with all IDCEC numbers within 5 business
days from completion of our CEU. A copy of this attendance roster
will be retained at the Chapter for 4 years as verification of your attendance.
You will receive an email notification after attending the event once we have
reported attendance on your behalf. We will no longer be distributing Certificates
of Completion. IIDA and ASID members are required to complete a survey
online to get their Certificate of Completion.
Letters with your identification number were mailed in early July 2012. If
you have not received the letter please contact IDCEC for the unique identification
number and password.
As a reminder:
ASID bylaws and policies require all practitioner members (Professional,
Allied, Associate members) to earn a minimum of 0.6 approved CEUs every
two years. This is a required condition of membership. The current reporting
period began Jan. 1, 2012 and will end Dec. 31, 2013. Paying your dues indicates
that you agree to remain in compliance. If you need help finding
CEUs in your area please contact your chapter and request information on
upcoming events in your area. You can also take online courses for credit at
any time at ASID UNi.
This member requirement strengthens the interior design profession by
improving individual attitudes, competencies, knowledge and skills in subject
areas essential to the growth and success of the industry.
About IDCEC
Established in 1983, the Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC)
serves as the premier advocate for continuing education in the advancement
of the interior design profession. IDCEC strives to inspire and guide providers
of continuing education programs to deliver high-quality, lifelong learning
activities for interior design practitioners across North America. In 2011
IDCEC became an independent entity with the help of its core members,
ASID, IDC and IIDA. For more information on IDCEC, visit www.idcec.org.
Changes Coming to NCIDQ’s Multiple-Choice Exams in 2013;
One-Year Transition in Place plus Rollout of Computer-Based Testing
The two multiple-choice sections of the NCIDQ Examination are undergoing
changes as a result of an ongoing commitment to ensure that the examination
is available to the greatest number of qualified individuals. In 2013, NCIDQ
will deploy two new multiple choice exams that will be given exclusively in
a computer-based format at a network of locations in North America. The
Section 3 Practicum exam is not changing and will continue to be administered
in a paper-and-pencil format.
Beginning in 2013, the two multiple-choice exam sections given on computer
will be the:
• Interior Design Fundamentals Exam (IDFX), available to those who meet
NCIDQ’s education requirements, regardless of years of experience. Questions
in this section will be at a level appropriate to a recent graduate.
• Interior Design Professional Exam (IDPX), available to those who meet both
the education and experience requirements. Questions in this section will
be at a level appropriate to a person with at least two years of diverse work
experience in interior design in addition to the required education.
Computer-delivered testing will bring with it considerable advantages for
test-takers. NCIDQ will be able to offer the exam more than just two days a
year, and there will be more choices of locations, reducing travel expenses for
candidates. The details of the test dates and locations are not final at this point
and will be announced online later in the year.
How will the changes affect you?
In order to earn the NCIDQ Certificate, a person must pass both of the computerdelivered
multiple-choice exams or both Section 1 and Section 2 of the current
paper-and pencil exam as well as the practicum drawing exam. There is a time
limit on passing the paper-and-pencil Sections 1 and 2, however.
The current Section 1 (Codes, Building Systems, Construction Standards and
Contract Administration) and the current Section 2 (Design Application,
Project Coordination and Professional Practice) will be administered in their
paper-and-pencil format only through 2013. If you have started taking
either Section 1 or Section 2 already, you must pass both before the end of
2013 or you will have to take both the IDFX and IDPX on computer. Whether
you are taking the multiple-choice exams for the first time or whether you
are retaking a section you did not pass previously, you must complete both by
the end of 2013 or you will lose credit for the multiple-choice section you
previously passed.
Legislative Corner Ask Pat!
Welcome to “Ask Pat!” For those of you who don’t know me, my name is
Patricia K. Weiss, ASID, and I serve on the Board of Directors for the Interior
Design Coalition of California as the Communications Co-Director. I am very
excited to be a new part of the ASID Orange County quarterly newsletter.
The San Diego chapter has been instrumental in ramping up support in recent
meetings and events that have been planned by our ASID Board. IDCC had
a panel discussion at the event held at Nativa Interiors in May and we were
so encouraged by the designers and IP’s who attended and asked questions
that allowed us to encourage discussion of issues vital to our profession. The
fundraiser at the Old Globe was a huge success! IDCC’s Director of Fundraising
Adriel Cogdal was on hand to help me with the Silent Auction table. Adriel
autographed cookbooks; and we all enjoyed the tours and talks within the
Old Globe.
The last weekend in June was IDCC’s Annual Meeting held at the San Francisco
Design Center, where we met with some of our supporters from the North.
We also held a Strategic Planning Session as we determine the best way to
move forward towards our goal of registration in the State of California.
My desire for this column is to engage in conversation. I will answer questions
in this forum as well as invite you to join our LinkedIn group, where the
conversation is very quick and responsive and we have members who
weigh in on the legislative situations in their areas, from within California
throughout the United States. We also have just started a Facebook page,
please log onto your professional pages and look us up and “like” us! And
stay tuned, our website is getting a major facelift, making it even easier to
sign up for e-blasts and membership.
Please send your legislative questions with the subject line “Ask Pat” to
communications@idc-ca.org, or submit them through our LinkedIn group
discussion page for quicker response. I will choose questions each quarter to
provide insight and clarity to our legislative discussion.
I look forward to hearing from you!
The Plexi Gallery
INDUSTRY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
“So much more than just a custom framing resource”. We
hear this from so many interior designers after their first
experience with The Plexi Gallery. Doing business "To the
Trade" ONLY for nearly 30 years, we have developed a
coherent and seamless process to offer the interior designer
and their clients a beautiful, affordable, and profitable solution
to bring the artistic finishing touch to any custom
designed space.
Let us paint a quick overview of the services our team
provides. With an almost unlimited array of original art,
posters, canvases, prints and giclees available in custom
sizes, we work with you the designer, to develop the perfect
cohesive and stylish look that art brings to any space.
Designers that have been working with us for years love
the fact that they can pick up the phone and make an “In
Gallery” appointment to meet with our design team in
person. However, with much of today’s business taking
place through online communication we have developed
our “Time Saving” pre-selection services. Send us your
design ideas, material selections, color samples, etc. and
our staff will pre-select artwork and framing ideas for you
to choose from at the time of your appointment. When you
arrive, your design project is already in the minds of our creative team and
they are able to focus on your needs and streamline the selection processes
to save you time. We can also e-mail you photos of artwork and frame samples
to look at before you arrive to get your project moving in the right direction.
The talents of our Partner Artist, Maria Deganis, will come to life with custom
designed art, specifically created for your space when presented with your
design concept, material selection, color scheme and fabric patterns. She will
work with the designer and their clients to create original works of art that
simultaneously complement and enhance the design space. Maria has developed
a unique process that designers find extremely valuable to their overall
design vision. Her art has been sought after by numerous designers
working on residential projects, commercial projects and showcase homes
such as The ASID Design Tour @ Astoria Towers Irvine, The ASID Orange
County Dream Home @ SoCo, and several of the Orange County Philharmonic
Society’s House of Design tours.
Often times, you look around your client’s home and discover a personal item
sitting on a shelf, table, or desk, maybe even tucked away in a closet or drawer.
At The Plexi Gallery, we can turn that object into a showpiece, beautifully
displayed by designing and building a custom museum display case for it. An
everyday dimensional object
is transformed into a unique
design element. Your clients
will love the attention this
gives to their personal treasures.
A custom-framed mirror will
add elegance to any room.
With thousands of frame
samples on the walls of our
gallery, we can create exactly the look you are striving for. Every space, be it
commercial or residential including kitchens.... needs beautiful custom frame
art, artistic elements and mirrors.
“With our industry as difficult as it is currently, it is just amazing to find a
company that truly embodies the spirit of what ‘Industry Partner’ is meant
to mean. I swore I’d never drive from San Clemente to Santa Ana to frame
art, but it is well worth it! This is the kind of partner you keep for life! " Beverly
Stadler, Design Focus, ASID, NCIDQ, Certified Interior Designer.
"I have worked with The Plexi Gallery on both residential & commercial
ASID Launches a New
Lunch and Learn Program
By Cynthia Prizant, Allied ASID
2012 Lunch and Learn Chair
I am excited to take on the role of Lunch & Learn Chairperson for the upcoming
year. We have revisited the existing program and have decided to broaden
it to include lunchtime presentations at our Industry Partners’ facilities, in
addition to those at our ASID office. It is a way to involve our Industry Partners
who do not have showrooms large enough to host monthly general meetings,
but still want to have an opportunity to engage our members at their facilities.
The new Industry Partner-hosted Lunch & Learn alternative, enables
us to offer educational seminars to a larger group of our members, with a
maximum attendance of 40 Allied or Professional Members.
Our first venture with the new venue option was August 21st at The Plexi
Gallery in Santa Ana. Maria Deganis enlightened us on selecting, purchasing,
repurposing and framing art for your clients. Stay tuned for our upcoming
quarterly presentations.
introducing a modern eclectic sensibility to the designs. Endlessly playful, yet
July General Meeting at Maison Stone
By Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID
2012 ASID OC Programs Chair
Probably one of the most successful ASID OC General Meetings was held in July at Maison Stone
in Costa Mesa with a big crowd of enthusiastic ASID Designers, IP Members and Students attending.
We had our first “Book Sale” at the event where attendees donated their coffee table art and design
related books and purchase others. All proceeds benefitted the ASID Foundation.
The newly renovated showroom of Maison Stone was the first place one entered after registration.
There was plenty of beer, soft drinks and appetizers to enjoy while checking out their
latest products. Attendees then made their way into the covered slab yard with Chef Rick LeBlanc
catering some very delicious food from Rick’s Atomic Café and demonstrating some cooking skills.
Finally, everyone was led to the outdoor area in a tent where the program started.
Char Cowan, our ASID-OC Chapter President introduced Rick Campos, the ASID OC Chapter Barbara Keller, Gigi Harris, Laura Yorba and Char Cowan
President for 2012-2013. Char also presented a Certificate of Merit in recognition of participation
in the 2011 ASID Foundation Chapter Challenge to Barbara Keller, on behalf of the ASID
Orange County Chapter. Afterwards Vincent Moiso, Vice President of Maison Stone, thanked
the guests for attending and gave a short talk on their facility and products. And finally the speaker
of the night, Feras Irikat, started his CEU on Color Theory.
Feras Irikat, Design Director for Oceanside Glasstile and Mandala, is a fun, passionate and energetic
person; and it was not only his knowledge but also his way of speaking that made the detailed
CEU really easy and interesting to follow. The audience liked him and his topic so much that even
after the end of the program some stayed to listen to him for another half an hour.
The program ended with some awesome raffle prizes including dinner for two at Rick’s Atomic
Café and some great wine; and one lucky winner even took home an IPad!
The tent outside for the CEU
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Vincent Moiso for hosting such an amazing event,
and as always, Kerry Anderson of AudioVision for setting up the AV system.
Interior Design in the Fall
WHAT’S HOT!
What’s a better way to get ready for Fall than getting your clients home to feel
cozier and warmer? It’s all about having them feel more at home in their house.
While I don’t recommend repainting the whole house just for the season,
paint an accent wall with a different color such as orange, brown, or green
to bring a touch of Fall into your space.
Fall foliage will make a big impact. You can bring Autumn colors to the home
just by adding a splash of color with
some beautiful fresh flowers.
Mix cold and warm elements. Bold
wallpaper is very graphic and it can
sometime feel cold, but adding an
orange chair and an antique console
adds warmth to the space and creates
a perfect balance for any room.
Sometimes all you really need is to add some nice throws and/or warm & fun
pillows.
A rug usually is a big purchase, it can make a big statement to the space.
Accent pillows are the easiest accessories
to change out for a quick
update. Choose heavier
fabrics, like woven linen,
flannel, or corduroy, ones
with a comfortable texture.
This will carry you through
winter.
Add a winter quilt on the bed for a
splash of color and warmth on those
chilly autumn nights.
Last add some Vitamin C, that’s right my friends!
It’s all about ORANGE! That’s the best color to
bring the Fall into the home.
But the most important thing is to observe the
changes around you. That’s what Fall should be
all about anyway.
Save the date: Wednesday, January 23rd
The Orange County Chapter of ASID hosts one of the largest and most successful chapter tradeshows in the nation.
Filled to capacity with our dedicated Industry Partners exhibiting the latest designer programs and goods, this is quite
possibly the most valuable day of networking and education that our chapter offers all year.
As a designer, this is your chance to connect with IP exhibitors and learn all about their designer trade programs,
brand philosophy, product details, and most importantly you get to meet the reps and staff who will ultimately handle
your business.
As an Industry Partner, this is your chance to connect face to face with local and regional interior designers and showcase
your brand and products. Designers who attend the show are in work mode and are there to make new
connections and to further develop existing vendor relations.
As always we will offer a CEU seminar as well as a
2011 Ferguson’s
keynote presentation not to be missed. Early bird
EXHIBITOR registration ends October 1st so be sure
to lock in your booth space before the price goes up. DESIGNER registration opens shortly thereafter.
Event and exhibitor details will be added to the chapter web page under the TRADESHOW
tab, so check back regularly.
STUDENT
CORNER
Now that you’ve graduated, what’s next?
By Gigi Harris, Allied ASID
2012 ASID OC Professional Development
Director
On behalf of the Board of Directors of ASID
Orange County, I want to congratulate our interior
design students who have recently graduated!
Having all had formal design education
from some of the best design programs in Southern
California, we KNOW the countless hours of
sleep you have sacrificed to obtain your degrees.
You have just achieved one of the most difficult
things you may have to endure as a designer, from
the all night homework sessions to agonizing
over design decisions, to producing that overthe-top
final product, and finally mustering the
energy and reconnecting with your passion for
your concept to deliver THE perfect presentation.
Your design education is the best training
for setting a new personal standard and work
ethic that will equip you well for what’s next in
your design careers.
Advance to
The first few months out of design school can be a potentially isolating time
for many new designers. I would be remiss not to encourage you to stay
plugged into an organization that can help you tremendously as you transition
from student designer to working design professional. The networking,
support and mentorship that are available to you are invaluable as you begin
Student Rep Message
By Tamara Stratton, Student ASID
2012 ASID OC Student Rep to the Board
The seasons are changing again and the new school year is upon us
ushering in new leadership and new challenges. The world is changing so fast
and as designers and particularly as students there is always so much more to
learn, explore and master. I am excited for you to take advantage of new design
courses and exciting opportunities such as ASID’s Real World Design Week in
November.
The shimmer of summer passing and the days growing shorter always make me
a little nostalgic. Looking back over my role as Student Representative to the
Board of ASID it was a great year and I want to thank you for the opportunity to
connect to you, the design students, and school faculty though ASID. I appreciated
the commitment to ASID you demonstrated by your participation, membership
and volunteerism. It was a privilege to share in your discoveries and
accomplishments over the last year and to see a glimpse of our future in design
though the eyes of the leadership to come. Now is the changing of the guard and
I welcome the new Student Representative knowing that she will have a great
adventure ahead as well.
The Summer Olympics have left us with a real sense of inspiration and a tangible
example of the result of hard work, goal setting, sheer will and the motivation
that is generated through the desire for excellence and team spirit. I personally
applaud your team spirit and initiative and encourage the champion in each
one of you. As I always say, “Lead the way!” I cannot wait to see where you will
take us!
The Art Institute
The Summer Quarter is quickly flying by at The Art Institute of California-
Orange County, with only a few weeks until finals and our Fall Quarter beginning
on October 1st! We have been busy. Our Speaker Series continues with
a Guest Speaker or Panel of Speakers every three weeks. This quarter we
have had Daniel Kim from Gettys, Laverne Caceres from The Professional
Voice and Betty Friedrichs from 3 Form. We are looking forward to our
visit from Jennifer Bonetto, Feng Shui Master in October.
So much has happened in recent quarters. We found out that our regional
accreditation was approved and we are now accredited not only by The
Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) but also accredited by The
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This was a cause of
much celebration!
We have had several field trips including to the Getty and Quicksilver. Our
several students winning cash prizes for their design to transform the Hotel.
community based projects. Our students have been actively volunteering with
Habitat for Humanity of OC to help with the grand opening of ReStore Santa
Ana. Their goal is to be able to prepare salvageable items from OC homes and
businesses to be resold in the ReStores. They helped to prepare two ReStores
in Garden Grove and Santa Ana. All the proceeds
from the ReStores go towards building and
repairing homes in Orange County for low income
families. They also participated in merchandising,
pricing, and assisting customers with
purchases. This has been an ongoing project for
Westwood College since the beginning of the
academic year 2012.
The Interior Design program at Westwood
College attempts to advance the profession by
educating a new generation of interior designers
to be cognizant of social responsibility and are
trained to apply current theories and practices
such as Sustainable Design with a
strong emphasis on critical thinking,
Computer Aided Design, Building
Codes and Construction Practices.
Students learn to apply hands on
experience in the field of Interior
Design making them best prepared
for a career in the industry. By volunteering,
our students develop awareness
of important social and
professional issues and a desire for
life-long learning that are necessary
to meet the changing demands of the
interior design profession.
