Revitalizing our Networking Groups$10,000 / yearSupport and networking groups are the primary means by which our members build a support community.Support groups provide an ongoing shared exploration of emotional and social issues faced by peopleliving with cancer. These groups are limited to 10-12 people and are facilitated by a licensed socialworker (LMSW). Because our members share the collective wisdom of their direct experience, they areour experts. Newcomers receive support from more longstanding members, who become experts forthose new to the group, modeling ways of handling issues, helping them to anticipate developments andlearn from their experience. Networking groups are more issue-specific: there is a breast cancer group,a gynecological cancers group, a young adults group and a men’s group, among others. These groupsoffer participants a chance to hear an expert lecture on a topic of concern, and the lecture is followed by adiscussion facilitated by an LMSW. The gynecological cancers group, for instance, might hear a lectureabout the effects of cancer on fertility. Networking groups offer both a focused source of information anda chance for members to pool their knowledge.Our networking groups are currently in jeopardy of losing their focus. Facilitators for both support andnetworking groups are funded by a grant from the New York City Department of Health, but the expertspeakers that distinguish networking groups – and the staff time necessary to recruit them – remainunfunded. Without the ability to pay guest lecturers’ honorariums, or even cover their travel and otherbasic expenses, it becomes extremely difficult to attract speakers. Without speakers, these groups becomeless attractive to members, who then tend to attend support groups exclusively. Funding for speakers andfor the staff time necessary to seek them would revitalize networking groups as a focused, parallel meansof support.
