“Sustainability starts
with the sourcing of
our ingredients,”
Bas Schneiders , Weleda
» Bas Schneiders, Head Corporate Sustainability and International
Strategic Sourcing at Weleda, was in Paris last month on the occasion of
the conference organised by the Union for Ethical Bio Trade (UEBT). He
told Premium Beauty News how the Swiss company works at organising
its business to achieve high sustainability standards.

Weleda is well known for its natural medications and beauty products.
How naturalness combines with sustainability?
Actually, the two of them are closely linked. Sustainability is in our DNA,
it is the starting point of our corporate identity and it goes hand in
hand with our strategy and values. Which means that the way we
operate our business must be consistent with the message brought
through our products and it must meet with our customer’s expectations.
Nevertheless, it is true that being natural does not automatically means
being sustainable. We have therefore set-up a package of sustainability
goals to guide our business: ecological sourcing & biodiversity, fair
trade, climate neutrality, sustainable packaging, water management,
and, communication.

It is also why you became a member of the Union for Ethical Bio Trade?
Since ecological sourcing & biodiversity is a major keystone of our
sustainability strategy, becoming a UEBT member was merely logical.
UEBT plays a key role in developing both the public’s and business’s
awareness on issues such as sustainable and ethical sourcing. As we only
use natural ingredients, biodiversity is the source of our business and
we cannot afford to have a negative impact on it. This is why I say that
preserving biodiversity is part of our business model.
And what about fair trade?
Fair trade is a way to share our values with our suppliers. The difficulty
with fair trade is that there are a lot of different standards, a lot of different
certifiers and labels. As a consequence, it is somewhat complex to provide
clear information to consumers. In particular for a cosmetics company that
uses hundreds of ingredients! From this point of view, the UEBT standard is
very interesting and practical. It is a very good management tool for the
verification of all our supply chains of natural ingredients.
We currently run over 50 partnerships and projects with suppliers around
the world. Working on a long-term basis and avoiding one-shot actions is
beneficial to all parties. It is a guarantee for our suppliers and a way to
secure our supply chain for us. In the context of rising prices for raw
materials and speculating markets, these partnerships are also interesting
from an economical point of view.

Pomegranate
Supporting sustainable farming methods
Pomegranate is an ancient crop
with highly effective ingredients that
serve to maintain the balance of the
skin and stimulate its regeneration,
and the sustainable procurement of
organic pomegranate seed oil is key to
Weleda. By working with a local oil
processing plant and approximately
100 small-scale farmers in the outlying
areas of Kayseri in Cappadocia, Turkey,
a long-lasting partnership has been created
– supporting sustainable farming methods.
Sea Buckthorn
Biodynamically farming endangered plants
At the Biodynamically-managed San Mario
farm in Tuscany, the family business
Künzi & Röthlisberger has succeeded in
cultivating this rare wild plant. Kurt Künzi
and his eight employees have worked in
partnership with Weleda for over ten years.
The continued existence of these
endangered plant types is therefore
guaranteed for the future, through this
sustainable cultivation, Weleda is also
ensuring access to these essential and
important raw materials rich in vitamin
C used in elixirs as well as natural beauty
ranges.

Wild Rose
The biggest organic rose project worldwide
Organic Damask roses give our Wild Rose
range it’s unique fragrance. The Weleda
rose project started in the Isparta region
in 2001 with the local rose oil distiller
and 30 small-scale pioneering farmers,
working in collaboration with Weleda.The
project eventually grew and inspired 300
farmers to switch to the sustainable
cultivation of organic Damask roses. Weleda
guarantees purchase of Rose Absolute
perfume, and as a result receives consistently
high quality and plentiful supply.
Citrus
A hundred farms make up this fair trade
co-operative
The warmth of the Mediterranean Sun,
volcanic and therefore nutrient-rich soils
and extraordinary care are some of the
many reasons why one of the best essential
citrus oils is obtained from the Sicilian lemon.
Weleda’s Sicilian fair trading partners,
Francesco and Concetta Salamita manage
a co-operative, which includes about 100
farms throughout the island. Salamita
exclusively cultivates biodynamic lemons.
Once washed in spring water, all of the
farmers produce comes together at Salamita
before it is sent to its final destination.
