oTher KeYS To The <strong>Darebin</strong> <strong>CYCLinG</strong> PiCTurebike shops – <strong>Darebin</strong> has seven very successful bike shops, including two that have openedin the last five years.Parkiteer – In addition to Council’s program to increase provision <strong>of</strong> on-street cycle parking, asecure cycle parking shed has been built at the Reservoir train station, the Reservoir Parkiteerwas funded by DoT and is run by Bicycle Victoria and has a capacity for 25 bikes.Cycle Training – A number <strong>of</strong> cycle training programs have been run in <strong>Darebin</strong> since 2005.The following have a community focus: Bicycle Victoria’s “Time to Ride”, Jika JikaNeighbourhood House “Bike it, you’ll like it”, <strong>Darebin</strong> Bicycle Users Group courses, Love LivingLocal courses for disadvantaged youth, Jika Jika Beginners courses and CycleWise confidencecourses. Bike Ed courses are also run in local schools.<strong>Darebin</strong> bicycle user Group – <strong>Darebin</strong>’s local cycling group continues to engage stronglywith the community, running four regular weekly rides (with high attendance from older adults),regular families on bikes rides and monthly themed rides. The group has a wide membershipand serves a social function, runs programs to promote cycling and also plays a strong role incampaigning for improvements in cycle provision in <strong>Darebin</strong>.Going Places – Council’s community sustainable transport promotion program has 880members who live or work in <strong>Darebin</strong>, and as part <strong>of</strong> the program 127,814 km have beenrecorded by members as travelled by bicycle instead <strong>of</strong> alone in a car.Love Living Local – Over three years Love Living Local promoted active travel within Fairfield,Northcote, Thornbury, Preston and Reservoir. Cycling initiatives included bike skills classes withdisadvantaged children and youth; setting up East Reservoir Men’s Shed with equipment andspace to restore and distribute secondhand or discarded bikes; and a street party held at theReservoir velodrome with the Reservoir cycling club, bike maintenance classes and promotion<strong>of</strong> social cycling groups.School Travel Planning – Cycle promotion is a key aspect <strong>of</strong>Council’s promotion <strong>of</strong> sustainable transport to schools. Councilencourages schools to participate in Bicycle Victoria’s Hands Up!surveys, collecting data on active travel, promotes Ride to Schoolday, provides a Bike Trailer for use in Bike Ed, and <strong>of</strong>fers Bike Edtraining to teachers so they can teach children to ride safely.TravelSmart Map – A new and updated TravelSmart map wasproduced in 2010. All 10,000 copies <strong>of</strong> the 2007 edition having beendistributed to residents, bike shops and as part <strong>of</strong> the travel planningprocess.<strong>Darebin</strong> <strong>CYCLinG</strong> <strong>STraTeGY</strong> Achievements Report 2005-2010 | 11
