Darebin CYCLinG STraTeGYAchievements Report 2005-2010

inTroDuCTionOver the last five years, significant achievements have been made in implementing the DarebinCycling Strategy. These changes have been supported by a strong shift in the attitude tocycling within government and the community. The resulting increase in cycling numbers isdramatic, with the number of cyclists using key routes in Darebin increasing by 170% over thelife of this strategy - from 948 to 2560 1 . This is a greater rate of increase than the increase of63% averaged from other similar locations throughout Melbourne 2 .Darebin City Council has invested considerable human resource and infrastructure expenditureto support this shift. The Council has also been successful in attracting substantial partnershipfunding for a number of noteworthy projects. By combining these major achievements with thehigh quality facilities already in existence, and an extensive program to fill in any gaps, acomprehensive variety of routes has been created. The new and improved facilities have beensupported by wide spread travel behaviour change initiatives in Darebin.1Annual cycle counts completed in the AM peak mid-March between 2005 and 2010.2Bicycle Volumes 2005-2009: Inductive Loops in Melbourne.
