cultures. It explores international issues ranging from physical, urban and rural environments,
how these features are interconnected, forming patterns and processes impacting on present
Holy Blood Procession Bruges
Annually since the year 1150, the historic city of Bruges has been attracting thousands of visitors to
one of the great religious pageants in Europe, the Holy Blood Procession.
For eight centuries the relic has been venerated by a mile-long procession of 1,500 Bruges citizens,
many in the colorful medieval garb of Crusader or knight.
The relic of the Holy Blood was brought to
Bruges by Thierry d'Alsace, Count of Flanders
in 1149, presumably given to him by the
Patriarch of Jerusalem in recognition of his
contribution to the First Crusade in the Holly
Land.
The procession during which the relic is
paraded through the town for veneration dates
to 1303. Except for being in hiding during the
two World Wars it has never left Bruges and is
kept in the Basilica of St. Basil in the Burg
Square.
©Jan Darthet
There are two parts to the procession : the first
by tableaux and floats enacts scenes from the
Bible up through the coming of Christ and His Resurrection. The second part depicts the return of the
Count of Flanders to Bruges. More information on the Holy Blood Procession is available here
EUROGEO has a limited number of reserved seats along the route of the procession. The other option
is to stand along the route (free). The prices for the reserved seats is 12 EUR per seat.
If you are interested at the reserved seats you need to indicate this on the registration form, places will
be on ‘first come – first serve’ base.

Conference dinner at Brewery “De Halve Maan”
The homebrewery "De Halve Maan" is the only family brewery in the
centre of Bruges that is still active. “De Halve Maan" is situated in the
heart of our historical town and offers a hospital welcome to the visitors.
Field trip “Zwin area”
In 2005 new life has been blown into the brewery with the revival of the
brewery’s activities.
Xavier Vanneste, son of Mrs Véronique Maes, restarted the old brewery
after a thorough renovation of the remaining installation. He launched this
new beer under the name ‘Brugse Zot’ for which a unique recipe has been
developed. Today Brugse Zot is the one and only beer really brewed in
Bruges’ town centre !
By the end of 2008, "Straffe Hendrik" a beer once developed and brewed
by the Maes' familiy returned to Bruges and is now being brewed, once
again, at the brewery "De Halve Maan" according to the original recipe.
On Saturday afternoon an optional fieldtrip takes you to the historic Zwin area, formerly know as the
“Sincfal”. This was in medieval times the natural access to the sea for Bruges. By empoldering and
siltation this inlet almost completely disappeared but the traces in the landscape are still clearly visible.
During the field trip we will look for these traces, with focus on Damme (former outer port of Bruges),
the polders and how the landscape today is a fragile balance between nature and human activity.
