to the incredible living deserts of
the Red Centre, the Territory has
hundreds of declared conservation
sanctuaries including land-based
and marine parks, conservation
reserves and heritage sites ranging
from less than one hectare to
thousands
of hectares.
The most famous are the World
Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta
(Ayers Rock and The Olgas)
and Australia’s biggest and most
culturally and ecologically significant
national park, Kakadu, covering
20,000 km of the Top End.
Also high on visitor to-do-lists are
the majestic Litchfield, Nitmiluk
(Katherine Gorge), Judbarra
(Gregory), Keep River, Garig
Gunak Barlu (Cobourg Peninsula)
national parks and the wildliferich
Mary River wetlands in the
Top End. Central Australia’s
Watarrka (Kings Canyon) and West
MacDonnell national parks and
the Barkly region’s Karlu Karlu
(Devils Marbles) all showcase
