In the fa il of 1952, Joseph Tylus came fromTrenton State University to teach English at WestOrange High School. In the fall of 1967, he assumedthe reins of leadership in the school whenhe was appointed principal. Through the years,he advised the yearbook, directed the guidancedepartment, and became a dynamic force in theschool in his position as assistant principal. Now,with his first year at the helm drawing to a close,he took time out to reflect on the WOHS scene. He cited the Liaison Committee of the StudentCouncil as exemplifying a "sincere attempt inopening avenues of communication between studentsand faculty . . . a medium for free exchangeof ideas." He added, "School is a teachingand a learning process. Those listening andthose speaking need a mutual respect. It is inthis understanding that the tremendous potentialin our student body is displayed. It is here thatwe can accomplish what other schools cannot."DR. englishAN ENGLISH LOVE STORY(after Hemingway)Tall rugged Nick Adams bounded up the stairsand hurried into his English class. As the bell rang,he opened his notebook and began to copy theassignment o ff of the board. Grammar— Exercise A,page 351, Macbeth— Act III, read and prepare. Nicksmiled. He would do Exercise B plus Act IV. It hadbeen like this all year— through Whitman and W hittier,Hawthorne and Hemingway, Chaucer and Eliot. Was it a natural perverseness in Nick's nature thatled him to do the extra assignments? O r was heintellectually motivated by the great writers includedin the course? Or, may we infer from the dreamylook in his eyes that it was a crush on his teacher, young mini-skirted Miss Smith, who was now expoundingon the virtues of unrhymed iambic pentameter.Mrs. GasarchMr. ThomasMr. Evers35

With the new audio-lingual methods being used in teachingforeign languages, filmstrips, tapes, practice discs, and soundmotion pictures are now an integral part of the French, Spanish, and German departments. The emphasis is on active studentparticipation and the listening, speaking, and full understandingof the language. The study of Latin remains a significantdiscipline due to its direct relationship to English.Roman culture, grammar, reading, and most important, vocabulary, are the basic elements of the course./ J ,Miss Pontillo41Miss Loughren
