" Thou, too, sail on, O Ship of State!Sail on, O Union; strong and great!Humanity with all its fears,With all the hopes of future years,Is hanging breathless on thy fate!”

H ell broke loose in our senior year, thus making our graduation an event not oflocal interest as those in the past, but one of national importance. W e are rising youngAmericans. W e are the young men who w ill stand behind the guns, the workers whow ill win the war of production, the statesmen w ho will create the peace of the future. The theme of this book, therefore, is a patriotic one w hich the history of our timesseems to dictate. But we, the class of ’42, do not look back upon our school life as the patrioticduty into w hich it has developed; for in training us well for our part in the future,it has given us many good times. W e cherish many memories o f our school days. W eremember our long assignments; we hear again the lengthy debates; we recall our runningfor buses to reach school on time; but much more vividly do we remember thepleasures and the friendships of those carefree school days, the happiest years of ourlives. We shall not easily forget those days, the school, our friends. Too, we shallremember w ell the beautiful campus in its fall coat of orange, under its winter blanketof w hite, and in its spring dress of green; but that these and many other memories, sodear to us, may live-Ipng-ynto ^he future, we shall record them , for all, in this, our1942 "West-.O'-'Ranger.”

\jtdtca^io 7iIt is not often that students in perfect sincerity express their great liking for ateacher, but that is how we feel toward our Spanish instructor. Perhaps the reason welike her so much is that we feel that she in turn likes us.w ithout a cheerful smile. We have never seen herA lw ays w illing to help, she takes charge o f some o f thedetails o f our graduation, presents a Spanish play, her great yearly achievem ent, andstill finds time for travel, reading, and such sports as golfing and bowling.Perhapsthese interests are her magic formula for keeping as young as her students. W hateverit is, we know that she w ill never let us down. Therefore, though we may not knowhow to say it in Spanish, we dedicate our Yearbook to you, Miss Eaton; and w ith it,our deepest affection.

L / jE have no words to fell of what our country means to us. And words couldnever express the feeling we bear for our school. It has given us some happiness, somedespair, a great deal of work, and a way to live. A thousand people, working together, each for himself, each for his school, have been instilled with the deepest meaning ofdemocracy.

he Ship of State will never wreck upon the reefs so long as there are pilots to steerher aright in the long course that she must run. That her captain, her crew, may neverfail her is in part our responsibility; for the future pilots of the nation are the youths oftoday. The young people of our school, guided in the channels of democracy by ourprincipal, our faculty, our board of education, will some day themselves take part inguiding our country. They are the leaders of Tomorrow— the future of America.

THE SHIP’S MASTERSeldom, indeed, are the occasions on which we seeour superintendent, Mr. Strong. Aside from his alltoo rare appearances in assembly, we hear from himonly indirectly— an unexpected holiday has beengranted to us, a rainy morning has made it impossibleto have school, or sugar rationing means a weekof half sessions for us. Yet Mr. Strong is an integralpart of our West Orange Schools. He it is who attendsto the thousand and one details and problemsarising not only in our school, but also in the grammarand junior high schools. In spite of the manydemands on his time, he is an ardent rooter at allWest Orange football games, cheering the touchdownsand sighing at the failures. Interested in thewelfare of all of us, both individually and collectively,Mr. Strong receives our wholewearted admirationand respect.22

Through our twelve years of training we have always felt the skillful, reliablehand of the Board at the helm.It is this board of five that must keep our ship, the school system, always preparedto meet the challenge of time, which tends always to make obsolete anything which doesnot advance with it.It is the Board of Education thatselects our faculty, provides for theerection and maintenance of ourschools, and sets the standards ofour education. As the years of ourvoyage have slipped past, their taskhas become more difficult; new demandshave been made upon themand new problems presented, all requiringnot only training, but alsoan unerring judgment and completeunderstanding of the situations asthey have arisen. We believe that the Board ofEducation has all these qualities;and, therefore, we leave our shipin their hands to be berthed safelyat the end of her trip.

THE BRIDGE FORCEO f all the rooms in the high school building, none is sofamiliar as the office, that little room to the left of the mainentrance. To some, it is a place to secure excuses for absences, tardiness, and dismissal; for others it is a place to be avoided,if possible, for it is here that we are sent for such trivialcrimes as being late to class, cutting a class, or taking a oneday’s vacation when the other students apparently know nothingof the holiday. We also go to this famous room for allkinds of questions to which Miss Heslin and Miss Danielspatiently give us the answers. They take messages from Mawho wants us to wear our rubbers, they type our applicationblanks, they probe our alibies and determine whether or notwe shall be sent to Mr. Reimherr or Mr. Taylor. A *IO ffi cers presentIII afterthe most important group in the high school are the seniors—in our own eyes, perhaps; but also (or so we fondly believe)This is that we are superior in many ways to the undernotyet grown up. Ask any senior. That we ourselves wereis best forgotten, or at least remembered with tolerantwe did accomplish things then that we are still proud of.debate, for instance, in which Danny Kram, then amade the grade as best speaker. Then came our juniorByrne, our future senator, made such a hit . . . and weat our Junior Prom. . . . Oh, and we did manage to pass EnglishAnd now we are in our senior year, a year flowing over with more

the Senior Classfun than we’ve ever had before, more hard work, more real achievement. Therewas the Senior Play . . . the senior debate . . . the Junior Prom (we hate toadmit it, but it was as good as ours) . . . the scramble of publishing a yearbook. . . finally, graduation . . . the Senior Farewell. It has been a busyyear, but one we shall always remember; for it has been a year shiningwith a sw ift happiness that never again will come to us in quite thesame way.But in between our many activities we found time to elect ourofficers, whom we consider the most superior of all the superior seniors. We could not help electing for president Brendon Byrne. Withhis ability to make thundering speeches of which even a congressmancould be proud, it seems only fitting that Brendon should take some partin our class government. He is one of the best-known boys in the schoolsince, besides being president of his class, he is president of the AssemblyCouncil, has taken part in all of our debates, was in the Spanish Clubplay, and played an important role in the Senior Play. We have heard „ , „r 1 t i . . . . T, , ' , . , . Brendon Byrnerumors that he intends to go into politics. Ir that is so, his duties assenior president should be fine practice for him.Our vice-president is another celebrity— Dick ("Lamp”) Wagner. He is that rarity, a person who not only is in the topmost part of hisclass scholastically, but is also one of our best-liked athletic stars. And,to top it off, he was voted one of the most good-looking of the seniorboys. All this, and chosen vice-president too! But no wonder. Our popular secretary is Martin Bross. Well-liked among his fellowstudents,he was chosen for his friendly smile and his willingness to helpwherever he is needed. He has gone in for both football and basketball,as well as kept up a good scholastic record. Most important, he hassteadily made himself a host of friends throughout all his years inhigh school, as he has proved by becoming secretary of the senior class. And behold! We have another woman as treasurer— Alice Hart—which proves this is not entirely a man’s world. We have done well inelecting Alice, if we do say so ourselves; for she is one of the sweetestand friendliness girls in the school. She is always ready to lend a helpinghand, one of the reasons why we like her so— and why we chose herfor our treasurer. And there are our officers. Don’t you agree that they are superior?Ed. H E Juniors are like the race o f man; they are set a little lower than the Angelsand a little higher than the Sophomores. They are the privileged, the Chosen People; forthey have none o f the disadvantages o f newcomers like the Sophomores, none o f theresponsibilities that weigh upon the Seniors. They are the great, happy middle-class o f ourschool. A lm ost enviously we stop to w atch them as they blithely go their carefree way.

They grow taller than the tallest senior and shorterthan the shortest "soph.” They are profoundly wise, and yet unspeakably scatterbrained. As a group theircombined spirits would rival those o f the Dodgerfans. But put one alone on a deserted stage, and Mr.R. will soon be demanding "louder.” This is theJunior Class.Tom McHugh is head man this year. A versatilelad, he lists among his achievements football, track, baseball, and scholastics. Especially noteworthy washis participation in this year’s football squad.Second in the heart o f his fellow classmen is Vice-President Peter Robinson. Like Tom, he too sawaction this year on the football squad.T w o pretty Misses occupy the positions of secretaryand treasurer, Joan Blake and Mary- Alfordrespectively. (Wise children, those Juniors— there isa method in their madness; they will keep their eyeson the treasury, so the treasurer might just as wellbe pretty). One o f the school’s finest debaters claims a place inthe Junior Class. Irene Norton has won recognitionfor her debating since her sophomore year. A fellowdebater, Stanley Jacke, also, is an active junior. Hecan be seen rushing around the halls at any time ofday on "business.”The Junior Class has its share o f talent as witnessedthroughout this year. Eleanor Griffiths danced andcoached the dances for the Spanish Club program.Marguerite Maguire’s and Wilma W ilbur’s vocal abilitieshave not gone unsung. (Pun-Pun!)A high spot in the Junior year was the "Prom .”A conscientious Prom committee brought Spring intothe boys’ gym, and the dance was enjoyed by all.Insignificant as they be, next year they will be importantseniors. Then it is their turn to rule theroost. N ow all they can do is to frighten timidsophomores and wait!

u7 7 H , Youth! How like a crown thou wearest thy happy dreams! A nd so the merrylittle Sophomores trot gaily on their merry little way, while the elderly Juniors and thetottering Seniors look down and sigh for their past youth. The petted babies of theschool, with eager faces shining behind their bibs and tuckers, pause a moment to takeour wrinkled hand and show us the delights and cares of a youth that we, too, once knew.

As you wander through the busy corridors of ourschool, perhaps you have noticed the pint-sized studentswandering around with an anxious look in theireyes. These are the babies of the school— the sophomores.Fresh from the several junior high schoolswhere they were the most respected members o f thestudent body, they are quite bewildered by beingplunged back into obscurity by their older classmates. The first day o f school was for them a trying one, indeed. Unaccustomed to the school building, theyscurried around peering at the number on each doorand glancing shyly at the nonchalant upper classmen.A fter a few days they were more confident; and bythe middle o f the year they had made themselves apart of the school, some o f them having even distinguishedthemselves by their participation inschool affairs. On the football field several potential stars madetheir debut. Among them were Boyd Moreland, EdCross, Jerry Salinard, and Jimmy Ferrara. They alsotook part in other sports, such, as basketball andtumbling.Like their predecessors, the sophomores have anumber o f distinguished students. Bill Fleming, PatriciaLynes, Kay McFarland, James Ospenson, andEugene Shine have been continuously on the highhonor roll.T o the office o f president, the greatest honor thesophomores can bestow on one of their members, was elected Robert Milone. His mental ability coupledwith his charming personality makes him anexcellent leader of whom his class may well be proud.Boyd Moreland brought honor upon himself onthe football field by playing with the varsity andhelping out in a pinch. Flis classmates honored himstill further by electing him to the office o f vicepresident.Norman Carlson, noted for his beautiful blondehair, must be trustworthy, indeed, since his classmateshad enough faith in him to trust him withtheir money bags as treasurer of the sophomore class.Bill Fleming, the secretary o f the class, is wellknown for his scholastic abilities; for he led his classfor several marking periods. His shy smile andwillingness to help whenever he is needed promptedhis classmates to elect him one of their officers.

H E triumph of democracy lies not in the ringing speeches, the glorious deeds, butin the quiet everyday life of a democratic people. It is the shoulder-to-shoulder workof a million men and women. It is the spirit that walks the halls of a million schools, where students live their daily life in a spirit of fellowship, side by side, armed with thesame hopes, with the same dreams.

Sheeran clearsMario AvignoneGreat Guns! This year the football warriors o f West Orangeencountered the cream of the North Jersey footballcrop. Four o f their opponents placed among the firstten in the state rankings. Considering this fact, theWest Orange students can well be proud o f theirlight, under-manned football team, that started theseason dismally and came through with a FrankMerriwell finish. The opening game saw a powerful Irvington squadcome out on the long end o f a 2 to 0 score. Timeand again, the heavier Irvington eleven was thrownback by spirited, bone crushing tackles. The finalgun was sounded with the cowboys threatening toscore. The next week, the mountaineers traveled to playspeedy Paterson East Side. With lightning thrustsby their halfback, the East Side aggregation rolledover the cowboys 25 to 0. In the last quarter CoachWeaf used his subs to give them some experience, thus bringing Tom McHugh, small speedy halfback, into the limelight. The following week, fate and an excellent EastOrange team put another thorn into the sides of theWest Orange Cowboys. Aided by Mosso and thebull-like rushes of Saylor, East Orange defeated WestOrange, 33 to 0.The following week, the Kearny Kardinals invadedthe Cowboys’ home field. In the second quartertheir tricky T-formation clicked for a touchdownand gave Kearny the game, 6 to 0.The fourteen years o f victory over Orange wasincreased to fifteen by a thrill-packed game in whichthe outcome was in doubt until the final gun. Thecowboys won 14 to 13.Because o f a postponement, the Plainfield gamewas played Election Day morning. The Cowboysscored early in the first quarter, again in the thirdquarter, and also by an interception in the end zone. The final score was 19-6.The following Saturday the Cowboys journeyed toMontclair to play the New Jersey State Champions.Without a doubt, this was the toughest team encounteredby the Cowboys all year. The final scorewas 37 to 7 in favor o f Montclair.Next, the light Millburn team invaded the homestadium, only to be sent back wondering where CoachWear ever found so many able substitutes to put inthe fray. Over 40 players saw action in this runaway. All in all, a very good time was had by everyone, except Millburn. The final score was 33-7.The turkey day game was attended by an overflowingcrowd coming to see West Orange avengetheir 7 to 0 defeat o f the previous year by Columbia(L a rge fo r m a l) First r o w : T h om a s Stathakis, M ario A v ig n o n e ,H a lSquier, James Sheeran, R o b e rt H a g g e rty , A n d re w Salerno,B ra d fo rd W in.ins, R o b e rt H a m m a rb erg , L lo y d E arl, F ran k linC lose, T h om a s W ik . High. West Orange started their offensive rightaway and lassoed the Cougars, 19 to 6.On every football squad there are a few boys whoconsistently do good work but are never heralded bythe press or the spectators. One of these boys isJimmy Sheeran, a blocking back, who never carriesthe ball. He has cleared the way for many long runsand many a touchdown, but verv seldom in his foot-Cheerleader, Bill N ortonThe Star, Bob Haggertyball career has he been recognized by anyone exceptthe coaches and the players. T w o more o f these unsungheroes are the bobbing Bobs, Hammarberg andHaggerty. On every pile up into the line, the oneon the bottom is usually Haggerty, who gets hisman. On end sweeps and off tackle plays, Hammarbergusually breaks in and spills the interference ornails the ball carrier. W e pay a tribute to these unsungheroes o f the West Orange football team.

We also wish to pay a tribute to the fine work ofCoaches Wear, Wenner, Rankin, and Lawrence, whoalways had a kind word for the boys after a toughgame and praise for good plays. Never do they giveup the ship early in the season, as can be evidenced bythe comeback staged by the team this year.Marcus RankinAnxious? The 1942 edition of the West Orange basketballsquad was one of the "Durndest, fightinest” bunchof boys ever seen in this school. Despite the factthat they lost their coach, Marcus Rankin, to thearmy in the middle of the season, they compiled agood record under their new coach, Wendell Wear. The fact that their record was good was proved whenthey were asked to compete in the state championshiptourney of the past season.Paced by Captain Dick Wagner, the Cowboyspiled up a record that cannot be judged alone by winsand losses. Contests similar to those against Columbiaand Weequahic demonstrated a superior, even if notvictorious West Orange quintet."Lamp” Wagner "spark-plugged” the teamthroughout the season, and looked exceptionally goodwhen the pressure was on.Left to right, back row: Dan Tolley, W illiam Mathesius, Louis Kremer, G lenn Farner, A llan Haas, TomRidge, Tom Sexton, E m il Hansen, Jack Mellingcr, Coach Wendell Wear. Jack Sexton, the man about whom the team centered, proved himself an outstanding basketball playerby his constant good work and accurate scoring.Sensational plays were contributed when color wasneeded, by Andy Salerno, veteran of several basketballcampaigns.Under-estimated by the fans this year was "Jill”Close. Close had no flare for the sensational, but hisfine defensive plays, together with his thoroughknowledge of the game, made "Jill” one of the mainstaysof the quintet.Leo Faas and Ken McGuckin, the other seniors onthis year’s team, both saw a great deal of action thisseason. Leo makes up in ability what he lacks inheight, and Ken’s accuracy makes him a threat onany ball club.Lower classmen, Norman Carlson and "Sonny”Miele, are already well established varsity members. These boys promise to be among the most outstandingin the state next year.yWhere’s that ball!wx149

RollersA t the close of the basketball season, grunts and groans could be heard issuingfrom the boy’s gym. Looking in, we sawan amazing sight. There were boys, ourown students, flipping themselves aroundlike their distant relatives, the monkeys.Inquiring further about this matter, wefound this to be the Tumbling Club, agroup of boys with tumbling, turbulenttorsos, threshing about the floor. Andwonderment on wonderment, they do itall for fun, To appreciate their tricks, one must try them one’s self and see if hehas the faculty for falling too. Also coming from the gym. weresounds of the staccato dribbling of abasketball. “Ham Ration”It would be nothing but the truth were the seniorclass to sing loud praises of their hit play. And, notbelieving in false modesty, we do not mind doing so."Nothing But the Truth,” written by James Montgomery, was a hilarious success. Much of the creditfor this fine performance must go to Miss Hannes, who, by able and patient direction and the sweat ofher brow, drew out every drop of the hidden actor ineach member of the cast. She was aided by RayTower, our capable stage manager, and Blanche Borkstrom, our prompter. But, of course, the wreaths of triumph rest mainlyupon the heads of our cast, who positively amazed uswith their unexpected genius. For instance, JackWiegel, our truthful young hero, rolled us in theaisles, while we split our aching sides at the wittychirpings of Danny Kram and the despairing roarsof Brendon Byrne. Sixty sweet voices (excludingthat one alto— there’s always one alto!) canbe heard practicing every Wednesday under the directionof their able conductor, Mr. Barnes. They arepresented to the school at the Christmas Concert. This year, you remember, they sang from the angelloft— the balcony (so their pretty faces could nothelp their singing). They also took part in the HighSchool’s first attempt at producing an operetta. A lthough their activities have been limited, the Girls’Glee Club has added a great many songs to theirmusical repertoire this year.

After business iscompleted, Clio or Philo entertains hercompanion club. The program may be aspirited debate on "W hy We Should HaveHomework,” or perhaps book reviews ofcurrent novels. The program, no matterwhat it may be, is usually instructive aswell as entertaining. The one programconducted by Clio and looked forward towith the most enthusiasm is the programgiven to entertain the entire student body;for each year the ancient rivals, Clio andPhilo, vie with each other to see which canpresent the better assembly program. Thestudents profit from this rivalry in enjoyingan unusually novel assembly program.Clio and Philo’s friendly rivalry does notend with the assembly program but isprevalent throughout the year in eachclub’s desire to surpass the other in itsscholastic standing. This competition isclimaxed at the annual banquet where Mr.Reimherr, with due solemnity and ceremony, carefully opens the envelope containingthe averages of the two clubs.W ith bated breath the members await theword which will send them into the ecstasiesof a seventh heaven or to the depthsof despair. The winner in this battle ofwits takes into its possession the covetedsilver cup which it retains until it has beenwrested from its grip by its triumphantrival.Clio, with its friendly competition, itsmeetings, and programs, is a club of whichwe of West Orange High School can bejustly proud.

Although our companion club,Clio, now holds in her possession the silverloving cup for highest scholarship, we ofPhilo have resolved to win the battle of theintellects and emerge this year "The Winnah!”As a climax to our Club’s year, Philomeets with Clio to partake of a banquetfit for the "gods.” While we, the fortunatemembers, gorge ourselves with the delicaciesprovided, the sacred initiates sit uncomfortablyand self-consciously on hardbacked chairs, their anxious eyes on ourevery movement. Our fun and their discomfortbegin after the feast when theycarry out the nonsense devised by ourInitiation Committee. After they haveamused us with impromptu skits, impersonationsof Garbo, and such stunts, they arepledged to the club of their choice. ThenMr. Terwilliger, our honorary member, iscalled upon to give one of his famous talks.Mr. Terwilliger is also present at ourChristmas party, where, dressed as old St.Nick, he hands out small gifts, accompaniedby his original poetry.Every second Wednesday we meet withClio for our business meeting and programof quizzes, book-reviews, and unUsual talks. The student body can look back withpleasure to Philo’s St. Patrick Day assemblyprogram this year; for while enjoying thisIrish program, they learned much about thecustoms and traditions of St. Patrick’s Day.W ith deep regret we leave the shelter ofPhilo’s fold this year; but Philo shall livealways in our memories.Robert Titchen, Robert Stephens.Sitting: Robert Stephens, M iriam Turteltaub, Robert Titchen, Shirley Baldwin,Alice H art, Beatrice Sideris, Joan Blake. This Assembly Council has given us anincreasing number of musical programs, the mostpopular of which is the "Community Sing.” Whenthey are given the opportunity, they have given usspeakers to whom we are delighted to listen (orshould we say, to whom we are polite enough tolisten?) We read and hearnews reports and discuss freely and fearlesslythese reports which, in the hands ofour enemy and our allies, would be keptfrom the public. Since we still enjoy thisfreedom in our country, we are able to useit wisely in our schools. In our own school we use this liberty topresent to the students in the form ofdebates important topics of today and tomorrow. The Senior debate presented justsuch a problem of tomorrow when theychose to dgbate on the topic "Resolved: thatBritain and the United States ShouldForm a Federal Union.” Mr. Thomascoached the affirmative team of May Procurat,Brendan Byrne, Bob Stephens, andJack Wiegel to victory over Mr. Smith’snegative team of Blanche Borkstrom, D annyKram, Bob Titchen, and Karl Marx. The Junior Debate along the same lineelected to speak on the question of an All-American Union.
