THE BRIDGE FORCEO f all the rooms in the high school building, none is sofamiliar as the office, that little room to the left of the mainentrance. To some, it is a place to secure excuses for absences,tardiness, and dismissal; for others it is a place to be avoided,if possible, for it is here that we are sent for such trivialcrimes as being late to class, cutting a class, or taking a oneday’s vacation when the other students apparently know nothingof the holiday. We also go to this famous room for allkinds of questions to which Miss Heslin and Miss Danielspatiently give us the answers. They take messages from Mawho wants us to wear our rubbers, they type our applicationblanks, they probe our alibies and determine whether or notwe shall be sent to Mr. Reimherr or Mr. Taylor.
