Two of themleft their desks at W.O.H.S. Mr. Rankinand Mr. Walling contributed much to ourschool lives; now they offer all they have toour national life. Forgotten, temporarily, are allthe details that made up their lives as teachers—the involved explanations of intricate geometric theories,the driving excitement of training a crackbaseball team, the laws and treaties of by-gone days.Today, their time is taken up with learning insteadof teaching, discovering the complications of riflesand machine guns instead of revealing the secrets ofthe Pythagorean Theory, with doing push-ups anddeep knee bends instead of counting for them, withreceiving orders instead of giving them. Good naturedMr. Walling, "Prof” to his "pets,” and quick-wittedMr. Rankin, "Mayor Curlytop” to the Y.M.C.A.,have left gaps that can never be completely filled. Wemiss them; we salute them.
