J. W. Hardaway spent Sunday at home, hereby causing several girls to look sad. Several cases of whooping cough are reported here. Ewing Crenshaw, of Leaches, was here Monday on business. Ewing is just about the busiest man in Leaches. J. H. Bolton, of Leaches, who formerly represented that district on the Magisterial bench, was here Monday on business. Bud Ryan, of Lebanon Junction, spent here on business. Frank Carpenter, of Bardstown Junction, was in town Monday looking well. W. V. Ryan, of Bell’s Mill, was here Monday looking in on the fiscal court as it dispatched the county business. Dr. Hackworth, of Brooks, spent Tuesday here. Mr. Abner Colling, a well known citizen of Lebanon Junction, and Chairman of the School Board of that place, spent Saturday here. Mr. Chas. Hardesty, Ethel Wise, Effie Johnson, Thelma Lee and ?? were here Friday with the pupils for the examination. Misses Lillian Thompson and Bertha Trunnell, of Leaches, of this county, left Monday morning for Bowling Green where they will enter the Western Normal School to take an extended course at that school. Miss Elizabeth Stamper, of Lebanon Junction, expects to enter the Bowling Green school for spring term. Miss Ruby Monroe, a well known teacher, has been chosen regular substitute teacher for the grades in the Lebanon Junction school. The class that took the Common School Examination here Friday and Saturday was the largest class that this county has ever sent in for the winter examination. It consisted of 35 whites and 2 colored and came from every section of Bullitt. Mr. Chas. Newman, who has been seriously ill with pneumonia at his home on the Rolling Fork River, is some better and he now seems to have a fighting chance to recover. Miss Margaret Hardesty will open the school at Nichols Monday, March 1 st and will be ably assisted by Miss Elizabeth Cash. Both are well known experienced teachers. Barrall, Editor Transcribed from Microfilm by Edith Blissett in the year 2004 Just one year ago today, January 9 (looks like), 1919 the death angel entered the home of Mr. J. D. Ferguson, a farmer near Brooks, and took away his beloved son, Earl Ferguson, aged 14 years. On Sunday, January 12, 1919 the two little sisters passed away. That makes it more sad, for the three were all he had. These are the saddest deaths that ever occurred in the neighborhood. They are not only missed by their own family, but there is a vacant place in the school where their bright smiling faces have been missed more than tongue can tell etc, etc. And a poem written by a school mate. Death of Prominent Woman Mrs. Mattie T. Hill, aged 83 years old, and a member of a pioneer family of this county, died at the home of her son, Mr. John Hill, near Belmont of the Flu. Mrs. Hill, who was known as Grandma Hill, was loved by everyone who knew her and was a widow of the late Edmond Hill. Page 21 She had been a member of the Baptist church for over seventy five years and always a church worker. She leaves to survive her, two sons, J. R. and W. T. Hill, three daughters, Mrs. Mattie Tilden of Louisville, Mrs. Welman, of MO., and Mrs. Simpson of Ill, and many grandchildren. Her remains were laid to rest in the family cemetery Saturday. Federal Land Bank The Federal Land Bank of Louisville Declares a Dividend. Mr. Ora L. Roby, Secretary- Treasurer of the Salt River National Farm Loan Association of Shepherdsville, has just received notice from the Federal Land Bank of Louisville that the Directors have declared a dividend of six per cent per annum on all stock held by national farm loan associations. This will enable this association to declare a dividend to its shareholders, who are farmers in this vicinity borrowing from the Federal Land Bank. This dividend is not unexpected by persons acquainted with the progress being made by this bank. Although it has been in business for little more than two years, it has paid all its organization expenses and has placed twenty five per cent of its net earnings in reserve account, and after paying this dividend, has a nice sum left in undivided profits. Regular dividends will be declared in the future. This dividend serves to reduce the interest rates to the borrowers. All of the profits of the Bank go back to the borrowers in dividends, thereby giving the money to them at nominal cost. The borrowers will soon realize that
