The Tool Company

In-house coating capabilitiesreactive ion coating systems to deliver superior coating adhesion, uniformthickness and structure, and batch-to-batch consistency.Quality checks are integral: XRF equipment provides coating thicknessmeasurements and material analysis, and calotests allow us to view thestructure of the coating. The end result is a cutting tool or wear partwith the highest quality PVD coating and a significant advantage in anapplication.Where can PVD Coatings save money?PVD applied surface coatings are successfully applied to a wide range ofmaterials and parts. Cutting tools for the metalworking industry suchas drills, taps, end mills and broaches rely on heat- andwear-resistant coatings to increase tool life andproduction rates, but other industries alsouse PVD coatings to increase productivity.Guhring’s coating service regularlycoats wear parts for the mold and dieindustry, such as punches and stampingplates, as well as injection mold parts.Applications vary widely, from knifeblades to decorative jewelry, with endlesspossiblilties.Try it for free!Explore your coatings application with afree trial coating. nano-layer coatingsTiAlN top layernano layer zoneTiN base layerStructure of nano layering -each layer is only a fewnanometers thicknano-FIREX ® coatingThe newest generation of PVD coatings incorporates the heat resistance andshock resistance of a traditional multi-layer coating such as FIREX ® but with arevolutionary micro layering PVD process that imparts a structure that is moreuniform and cohesive. These micro-layered coatings are referred to as nanocoatings, and have some unique and beneficial properties which can improveperformance and dramatically increase tool life in cutting tools and wear parts.nano-FIREX ®FIREX ® coating is a PVD hard coating which combines the heat and wearresistance of TiAlN with the universal applicability of TiN coating, all in amulti-layer structure. The TiAlN in the structure increases the oxidationtemperature (the point at which the coating combines with oxygen in theatmosphere and begins to break down), or operating temperature, to 1470° F.This is much higher than TiCN, which has an oxidation temperature of 840° F.Another property of TiAlN coating is that at elevated temperatures the coatingwill have a surface hardness of approximately 3,300 (HV 0.05), which ismore than 3 times the hardness of TiCN. The multi-layering approach thatcombines TiAlN with TiN provides increased resistance to shock which cancrack standard mono or single layer coatings.Guhring’s nano-FIREX has the same TiAlN/TiN components as standardFIREX, but in a new micro-layered structure. nano-FIREX has significantlymore micro-layers in the same overall thickness than the original FIREX. Thisimparts superior wear characteristics, especially in applications where shockresistance is a major consideration.MolyGlide ®Initially developed for dry machining applications, MolyGlide is used inapplications where increased lubricity or a very low coefficient of frictionwill be beneficial. MolyGlide is a MoS 2based coating that is applied in aPVD process. This unique coating is sometimes referred to as Teflon ® -likein that nothing sticks to the coating. MolyGlide can be applied on uncoatedsurfaces such as injection mold parts, or on top of any hard coatings suchas TiN, TiAlN and FIREX, where MolyGlide can act as a barrier to materialgalling while the base hard coating can provide heat and wear resistance.Dry machining applications are a natural fit but many tapping and reamingapplications can also benefit from MolyGlide coating, especially whenmachining aluminum or other “gummy” materials.nano-A ®Guhring’s newest PVD applied nano coating is nano-A ® coating. nano-A is amulti-layer coating that combines TiAlN and AlTiN coatings in a micro-layerstructure that is harder and more wear resistant. Whereas TiAlN coating hasan oxidation temperature of approximately 1470° F, AlTiN coating has an oxidationtemperature of approximately 1650° F, and the hardness is increasedto 3,800 (HV 0.05). The micro-layer structure of nano-A makes this a betterchoice for applications where AlTiN would normally be used, such as hardmilling steel and materials over 45 HRC; but test results have also shownthat nano-A is frequently the best coating for high speed drilling and millingof all grades of stainless steels including 300 and 400 series grades.Another unique coating from Guhring:nano-Si ®Guhring’s coatings research department has developeda new nano multi-layer coating for nickel base materialsand hardened materials that require high surface hardnesscoatings. Called nano-Si ® , this TiAlSiN (titanium aluminumsilicon nitride) based coating is designed to yield similarperformance to diamond-like coatings without the restrictionson the host base material substrate. With a hardness valueof 5,500 (HV 0.05), nano-Si ® stands up to the most abrasiveapplications. The oxidation, or maximum useful operatingtemperature, is over 1,470º F, which is similar to hightemperature coatings such as FIREX ® or TiAlN.Test results in drilling inconel have shown a 35% increase intool life compared to a comparable TiAlN based multi-layercoating using the same operating parameters. Similar resultswere found when machining cast iron and hardened steels over52HRc.No other coating can provide this high hardness property while stillretaining the toughness required in drilling and milling applications.

and extend the life of your investmentProtect your investmentCarbide, PCD and even high speed steel tools can be damaged intransit if they are not properly packaged. Cutting edges and flutes arefrequently chipped by contacting other tools and damaged beyondrepair. Guhring recommends that all used cutting tools be shipped intheir original plastic tubes or cases whenever possible. If the originalpackages are not available, hot wax dip or bubble wrap will also helpprotect the tools. Guhring offers a safe a convenient plastic shippingtote with foam inserts for the safest mode of transport. These durablecontainers can be used as a storage receptacle within a tool crib andthen sent directly to Guhring’s reconditioning centers when full. Fast, convenient and safe -- further reasons to choose Guhring for your toolreconditioning needs. How much will it cost to recondition my tooling?Guhring provides a fast and convenienton-line quotation option forreconditioned tools. Simply log onto www.guhring.com and click ontool reconditioning in the Products& Services tab. Here is where youcan obtain a quotation for the cost ofreconditioning your tools and whereyou can request shipping totes andspecialized delivery options. You caneven print out your own packing slipand a copy for your records.Precision cutting edge honesSignificant gains have been made in the development of carbidesubstrates over the past decade, and newer submicron graincarbides have made carbide tools the first choice for most CNCmanufacturing applications. Carbide tools are more heat and wearresistant than high speed steel alloys, and they are considerablyharder, thus they can substantially increase production rates. When reconditioning carbide drills, it is critical that that correctcutting edge hone is applied to the tooling after the drill has beenre-pointed. The hone on a cutting tool is a secondary grind orbrushing operation that increases the strength of the cutting edgelip. The sharp cutting edge of the tool is slightly blunted to preventchipping which naturally occurs when extremely hard materials aremade razor sharp. When properly applied, the cutting edge honewill extend tool life and increase the tool’s effectiveness.Advanced hone application technology from Guhring is appliedto all our carbide tools that require cutting edge preparation, something that not all manufacturers or regrind facilities can offer.Attention to detail and superior manufacturing processes separateGuhring’s reconditioning service from all others.
