The Museum’s public programs and education services
provide a wealth of learning experiences intended to
engage and inspire our visitors.
Our schedule of public programs featured an especially
interesting array of lectures, performances, and films
in 2003 and 2004. Special highlights included sold-out
lectures by author Roy Blount Jr., art historian
Sister Wendy Beckett, and former Louvre Director
Pierre Rosenberg, and presentations by contemporary
artists Richard Serra, Roxy Paine, Leonardo Drew,
and Carrie Mae Weems. Performances by such
notable musicians as Ustad Imrat Khan, Trio Solisti,
Anonymous 4, and Christine Brewer filled the
Auditorium to enthusiastic capacity and received
critical acclaim. Art in Bloom, now a highly anticipated
annual spring event, brought beautiful floral interpretations
to the galleries and welcomed more than 10,000
visitors to the Museum in each of the two years. Beyond
our walls, the Museum collaborated on programs with
other cultural institutions in the area, including the
Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, Opera Theatre of
St. Louis, the Saint Louis Symphony, Pulitzer Foundation
for the Arts, and the Webster Film Series.
In January 2003 we inaugurated weekly Sunday Family
Programs, which now regularly serve more than 150
participants. Three new family guides, all sponsored
