TODAY'S GAME, final one of
the season for both teams,
BYU & UTAH BANDS
WILL PERFORM
AT HALF-TIME
WAC Finale
There is no "next game" for either
team this afternoon, unless a bowl
bid of sorts is in the offing for the
winner of the Bee Hive rivals.

Today's Game:
Collision Course
The collision course for today's
headon was charted much
earlier in the season. It will terminate
this afternoon at Stadium
Drive in Provo. The winner
—if able to stagger up again—
may even claim some kind of
post-season honors.
That the '69 campaign in the
centennial year of college football
should reach these proportions
is most appropriate. Neither
team, neither school, it
seems, would want it any other
way. It's been that kind of year
for both teams.
The Utes, after losing to Oregon
in the season opener, have
been whipping opponents with
regularity. They have been a
surprise team, one that has displayed
balance and consistency
throughout the campaign.
BYU, too, has been sprinkled
with a little Cinderella dust. Before
the season started, they
were so far back in the pack
that no one was giving them serious
thought. The idea of winning
four straight at home was
strictly "far out," a little too
much for one's imagination.
So now the whole package is
up for grabs.
It's not likely that anyone in
the stands is going to be indif
ferent to the outcome. If a person
should find himself or herself
in that position, they should
give up the seat to one of the
partisans.
If a person is inclined to go
with the underdog, then the
Cougars should get that kind of
support. After all, it will take
them a number of years to even
the score in this Beehive series.
The Utes have a commanding
(for want of a stronger word)
lead. Of the 44 games played between
the two teams, the Utes
have won 35, BYU five, and four
have ended in a deadlock.
And strangely enough, three
of those five BYU wins have
come while Tommy Hudspeth
has been at the helm of the
club; and they came in three
consecutive years, 1965, 1966
and 1967.
Thus, on the strength of comparative
records, past and present,
the Utes must be favored.
BYU's forte at the start of
the season was defense. In fact,
it is still the team's big strength.
The Cougars rank second only
to Wyoming in this department
in the Western Athletic Conference.
And while the Cougar offense
has come to life in recent
games, the Mountain Cats rank
On Stadium Drive
close to the bottom when it
comes to moving the ball on the
ground and through the air.
However, the signal-calling of
Marc Lyons has been a big factor
in the team's recent surge.
The running, pass catching and
general performance of tailback
Kip Jackson has been nothing
short of sensational.
Utah, meanwhile, has powered
its way forward with the best
rushing offense in the WAC.
Fullback Dave Smith has rushed
for over 500 yards, and there
isn't a player in Utah's rushing
statistics who has an average
below 4.0 per carry.
Quarterback Ray Groth, a senior,
is a passing threat, but
ranks second among the team's
rushers. He leads the team in total
offense with well over 1,000
yards this season.
A hot duel should be forthcoming
in the kicking department.
Utah's Craig Smith is third in
the WAC in punting with a 41.8
average, while BYU's Rich
Adams has kicked 68 times for
39.2 yards per boot.
Marv Bateman of Utah and
BYU's Joe Liljenquist are both
accomplished field goal kickers.
Bateman has accounted for 41 of
Utah's points.

University oj Utah Physical Education Complex and Special Events Arena.
L ][ 1
vr
:
The Complex
This fall, the University of Utah Athletic Department
moved into one of the finest athletic and physical
education complexes in the country.
Constructed on more than 18 acres of land at the
east end of the hill-top school's spacious campus, the
11.5 million dollar complex will provide Redskin athletes
with modern and functional equipment and facilities.
There are five buildings in the complex including
a 15,000-seat special events arena. The arena will
be the site of Redskin basketball games, special lectures
and concerts, as well as a number of other University
sponsored events. The activities building will
provide separate locker and shower rooms for each of
the eleven intercollegiate sports in which Utah competes.
The equipment and training rooms are furnished
with the latest equipment, and all athletes will be able
to enjoy the handball courts, volleyball rooms, steam
and sauna baths, as well as the most modern weight
lifting and exercise rooms. Three new practice football
fields have been constructed immediately adjacent to
the football team dressing rooms, and six new tennis
courts will be completed by the Spring of 1970.
The new complex puts the University of Utah among
thye elite in the nation and already the new three pool
natatorium has been selected as the site for the 1970
NCAA swimming and diving championships. The new
tennis courts will be the scene for the 1970 NCAA tennis
championships, and to add to the prestige, Utah
will host the Western Athletic Conference championships
in cross country, indoor track, swimming, golf,
tennis and track during the 1969-70 school year.

Life With The
Striped Shirts
It's filled with plenty of
humor and hazard
By G. David Price
WAC Director of Information
The humor and hazards of
officiating stretch far beyond
the boundaries of a football field.
John Adams, who officiated
in the Western Athletic, Big
Eight and Skyline Conference
for 20 years before he became
WAC supervisor of officials last
year, can recall many zany moments
on and offthe field.
Actions of officials' wives at
games are often humorous in retrospect,
but Adams also has an
interesting story about one who
almost didn't make it to the
game.
"Ed Flint of Denver and I
were traveling to Laramie to
work a game and were immersed
in a rules discussion," Adams relates.
"Ed's wife, Virginia, was
with us and naturally had little
to say during a conversation
such as this one.
"We stopped to buy gas and
Virginia excused herself to go
to the rest room. Ed and I continued
our rules discussion, paid
the attendant, and hit the road
again.
"It wasn't until we approached
Laramie that Ed discovered
Virginia's absence. She
was waiting back at the filling
station, presumably wondering
what had happened and possibly
deciding what to tell her lawyer,"
laughs Adams.
Adams also can laugh at his
own wife's antics.
He tells of the time he asked
Barbara how she reacted when
the fans were in a raucous mood
one afternoon.
"I booed along with them,"
she answered.
Sometimes, however, wives
can be more coy.
"I once asked my wife why
she refused to tell the fans sitting
around her that her hus
band was an official on the
field," recalls Ray Ball, a back
judge from Denver and commissioner
of the Colorado State
High School Activities Association.
"Do you think I'm crazy?"
she responded.
Ingenuity is a trait of many
officials working games.
Joe Paulson, a referee from
Denver, once discovered that he
failed to pack any black hose
with his uniform. Game time was
imminent. But the enterprising
Paulson quickly solved the dilemma.
He grabbed a bottle of shoe
polish, swabbed his legs in black,
and worked the game without
further incident.
There are many fans who
sometimes dream of shooting the
officials, but no official has come
closer to getting shot than Bill
Schmitz.
Schmitz, who is the father of
the Colorado State fullback of
the same name, was working as
back judge in the end zone one
day. The home team punched
across a touchdown, and the gleeful
fans fired a nearby cannon
in celebration.
Schmitz was standing so close
to the cannon that pellets ripped
through his pants, causing him
grave (sorry about that) concern.
But no delay occurred in the
game. Schmitz worked the rest
of the way in air-conditioned
pants.
Adams also recalls a tale
about a basketball official working
in Denver who committed
the rare sin of blowing his
whistle too hard.
"One of the things an official
constantly is told is not to
have a 'weak' whistle—to sound
it loudly," Adams explains.
"This official let go with a
strong blast—and his dentures
flew out and skidded downcourt."
That story remined Adams of
a person who may be college
officiating's only "triple-threater.
"This official was working a
football game and got involved
in a long play," Adams relates.
"He spotted a foul near the line
of scrimmage and threw his flag
at the spot of foul.
"A few yards farther he saw
another violation and dropped
his cap on the spot.
"Still farther down, he saw
a third infraction. It seemed that
he had nothing left to mark the
spot. But he rose to the occasion.
"Without hesitancy he ripped
off his toupee and flung it to the
spot."
Accolades from fans are hard
to come by, so one can excuse
Tom Saracino of Denver for taking
advantage of the following
situation.
Saracino was a spectator in
the stands at a game, enjoying
the lack of pressure. One of the
officials on the field made a call
which proved very popular among
the fans.
„ " A great call," enthused one
fan Who made that great
call?
"Tom Saracino," bellowed Saracino.

COLLEGIATE COMMISSIONERS ASSOCIATION
Early in 1939 five college football commissioners established
an organization for the purpose of attacking mutual
problems. From that small beginning has grown what is now
the Collegiate Commissioners Association, its members the
chief executive officers and their assistants from the eleven
major college conferences from coast to coast. Representing
276 institutions (including all but four of the NCAA's 118
major football-playing colleges and universities), they range
in size from the seven-member Mid-American Conference to
the mammoth 190-member Eastern College Athletic Conference.
The CCA's field of interest has broadened greatly since
its inception, now encompassing not only football, but all
sports on the collegiate program. The members as such give
united attention not alone to officiating assignment and rules
interpretation, but also to procedures on undergraduate athletic
recruitment and eligibility and to the many other facets
of intercollegiate sports administration.

The Fifth Down
Former Stars:
Where Are
They Today?
Many loyal football fans may be
asking themselves, "Where are our
football stars of seasons past?" For
those fans who periodically ask
questions of themselves, we have listed
the whereabouts of those famous
gridiron stars of yesteryear.
Otto Baun ('37) signed with the
Orioles after graduation, and is now
a naturalist with the Federal Government
Four Feathers, Maine.
Nephi "Crazy Legs" Swenson ('19)
is an orthopedic surgeon in East
Orange, New Jersey.
Clarence "Fats" Roller ('48) is
now a heavy equipment operator
with W. W. Clyde Construction in
Springville.
Bill Meek, Utah coach, wore a
brown and gold striped tie and a
gold shirt to the Wyoming-Utah
game Saturday. Wyoming's colors
are brown and gold, so Meek was
asked why he chose those colors to
wear this particular day. "This way
I could mingle with the crowd after
the game no matter who won,"
he laughed.
In Sunday's WAC Basketball
Press Day poll, Texas-El Paso
received one vote as high as first
place and a vote as low as eighth,
prompting Miners' Coach Don
Haskins to comment, "We'll finish
somewhere in there.'
Safety Seth Miller of Arizona
State has a simple explanation for
his team's 30-14 victory over previously
unbeaten Wyoming: "A
lot of us had our fathers in the
stands. It's hard enough to answer
to coach (Frank) Kush when we
lose. Do you think we're going to
nrlrl nur fathers to that list?"
It's fourth down and a yard to go
on the 26-yard line of the opposition.
QB takes time out and goes
to sideline for advice from the
coach on what play to use.
Coach - "You decide. You've got a
4-year scholarship and I have only
a one-year contract."
Michigan State is among the
teams using the triple option play.
"It's really a quadruple option the
way we play it,' says Coach Duffy
Daugherty. "We hand the ball off,
pitch it out, pass or maybe just let
it lie there on the ground."
Oklahoma State assistant signaled
to defensive QB by holding
nose with thumb and forefinger.
The QB was puzzled. Came over
and asked: "Coach, what's that
signal?" Answer: "You stunk up
the last play. Now you're on your
Johnny Lujack, Notre Dame
great, sat with Doak Walker and
Leon Hart, former Heisman
Trophy winners at Chevrolet
Motors All Time All America
dinner in New York. Lujack,
looking up at the dias graced by
Bronko Nagurski, Sammy Baugh,
Ernie Nevers and other greats,
remarked: "This is one second team
I don't mind making."
* * * * *
The Colorado football squad, in
this long-haired era, resembles a
bunch of rugged Yul Brynners.
Shaved heads are the vogue. Assistant
coach told the squad he'd shave
his head if they would. A couple of
players volunteered and another
batch followed. At last count 15
members of the Buffalo squad had
been shorn.
Indian chief called his tribe together
with statement that he had
both bad news and good news.
Badnews first: Winter severe. Game
scarce. Must survive on buffalo
chips. Good news: Have plenty
buffalo chips."
*t* *fi *T* *1* ^
Lone Star Dietz, once a top
coach at several colleges, was top
man in a story recalled by Walter
Paulison, ex-SID at Northwestern.
Dietz decided he'd watch a game
from the pressbox, using a phone to
the bench. As he started for the
pressbox he told his captain to kick
off after the coin toss. After he had
huffed and puffed his way to the
pressbox, he saw his team lined up
to receive.
"I told that so-and-so to kick," he
roared. "He did, Coach," an aid
responded. And they scored."
* * * 5(C *
Hostess: "Our dog is just like
one of the family."
Bored visitor: "Which one?"
* * * * *
A 14-year old boy asked: "When
you used to listen to the radio at
night, what did you look at?"
And no one could remember.
We get these nifties from Volney
Meece, Daily Oklahoman—On a
car bumper: "Donald Duck is a
Turkey" . In a rest room: "Hello
again to all my readers" . . . "War is
not healthy for children and other
living things" . . . "Support our boys
in Canada" . . "Free Lunch—Next
Door."

The Phantom
Strikes Again
It was a frigid, bleak afternoon
for a football game, and
the BYU fans in the old stadium
were wondering if they would
have anything to cheer about in
the Cougar's final game of the
1962 season.
After all, the Y's record was
3-6, their opponent for the afternoon
was league-leading Wyoming,
and the Cougars top performer,
tailback Eldon Fortie,
was out of the game with a painful
shoulder injury. It looked
like the Cowboys would breeze
through the contest without
much trouble.
But, after all, it was Fortie's
last appearance, and the 167pound
single-wing tailback had
led the nation in total offense
most of the season. He had already
been named to a couple
of All-America selections and
had been invited to two postseason
all-star games.
m
However, there seemed little
chance that Fortie would play.
The night before the game his
coach, Hal Mitchell, had said
that the Phantom wouldn't even
suit up. But, finally, the doctors
and Mitchell gave way to Fortie's
forceful persuasion, reluctantly
allowing him to suit up.
Wyoming jumped off to a 7-0
lead, and Fortie began to plead
with Mitchell for a chance to
go into the game. Again, the
coach relented. When the Phantom
came off the bench, the
crowd came to its feet with a
roar that must have baffled the
Cowboys. What's more, his presence
had a profound effect on
the other Cougar players.
With Fortie alternating on the
carries, the Cougars moved 48
yards in seven plays. The ball
was resting on the five, and the
Cougars knew there was only
He Brings Them Back

In the five years that Tommy
Hudspeth has been at the helm
of the Cougars he has experienced
about everything on the
scale of highs and lows. His
teams have had 2-8 seasons and
8-2 campaigns, plus the in-betweens.
As the former Kansan
began his sixth year, his record
with the Cougars stood at 25-24-
1, which puts his average over
the .500 mark.
But when it comes to describing
the 38-year-old mentor, the
word average doesn't fit any part
of him. Most of his playing and
coaching career has been made
up of highs, and the few lows he
has weathered have added much
to his professional background.
Tom, for instance, has been
credited with shaping the Cougars
into a winner. Prior to the
time that Hudspeth came onto
the scene (1964), the Cougars
had endured some frustrating
seasons. In his first year BYU
fought for time as Tom laid the
ground work for the future. The
first year ended a 3-6-1 record.
The next year found Hudspeth
and his staff taking a team that
was everybody's choice for last
place and guiding it to a conference
championship, the first
football title in the school's history.
Adding and refining along the
way, Hudspeth's third season at
BYU produced an 8-2 season record,
the finest mark in a span of
45 years of football at BYU. In
1967 the Cougars came up with
their third consecutive winning
season (6-4). But a stack of misfortunes
were piled atop the '68
campaign, and the record dipped
to 2-8, the low ebb in Hudspeth's
playing and coaching career.
Winning is part of Tom's
makeup, but his other contributions
have been equally important.
His brand of football is one
of the most colorful and exciting
to be seen anywhere. His teams
generate a wide-open type of offense
that fans thrive on, as indicated
by the attendance figures
for the past five seasons.
Home attendance zoomed to 26,-
357 at home three years ago,
and averaged 23,000 in the past
two years.
Hudspeth's teams have also
registered high in both offense
and defense. In 1966 the Cougars
were ranked second in the nation
in total offense, and the following
season were listed sixth
nationally among the major
schools. Recent teams have been
among the foremost in the nation
in rushing offense.
Born in Cherryvale, Kansas,
Tom attended school in Afton,
Oklahoma, where he was an allstate
quarterback. He moved
from Afton to the University of
Tulsa, where he captained the
freshman football team. In three
seasons with the Hurricane varsity,
he played on both the offensive
and defensive units;
quarterback and defensive safety.
In his three years with the
Hurricane varsity the team compiled
a 26-5-2 record, and in his
final season he was team captain.
In his senior year he set a school
record with six pass interceptions,
a mark that stood 14 years
until Jeff Jordan (Minnesota
Vikings) picked off seven in
1964.
Tom and his teammates played
in the Gator Bowl his senior
year.
Following graduation, Tom
launched his coaching career at
Norman High School. This was
interrupted by a two-year stint
in the U.S. Air Force as a commissoned
officer. He was discharged
as a first lieutenant in
1955, and returned to the coaching
ranks at Tulsa Central High.
His team at Central posted a
6-2-1 record.
A coaching job on the college
level opened up at Tulsa in 1956,
and Tom joined his alma mater
as freshman coach under Bobby
Dobbs. He remained an assistant
there from 1957 to 1960. When
Dobbs was named head coach of
the Calgary Stampeders, Hudspeth,
then 28, went with him as
an assistant. In the three years
he spent with the Stampeders
they were conference contenders
every season.
At age 32, after six seasons
in the college and professional
ranks, Tom was chosen to head
the football program at BYU.
Starting virtually from scratch,
he moved BYU football rapidly
to the forefront. The Cougars
won the WAC championship in
1965, and Tom captured UPI
Coach of the Year honors, and
was named Coach and Athlete's
Rocky Mountain Coach of the
Year.
Hudspeth's leadership qualities
extend beyond the football
field. In college he was president
of the senior class, and he has
served as a member of the high
council in one of the BYU campus
stakes.
In addition to his coaching duties,
Tom also serves as an assistant
director of athletics at
BYU. He has completed most of
the requirements for his mater's
degree in counseling.
Tom is married to the former
Ruth Ann Sandmire, and they
have three children; Max (14),
Phil (11), and Melissa (3).
