Colton SwanCo-Defensive CoordinatorLinebackers • 7th seasonWILDCATCOACHESJason BeckAssistant CoachQuarterbacks3rd seasonFormer <strong>Weber</strong> <strong>State</strong> linebacker Colton Swan, who served asa graduate assistant in 2005, begins his seventh season on theWildcat Staff. The <strong>2011</strong> season will mark his third season as Co-Defensive Coordinator. He also coaches the WSU linebackers.Last season Swan coached junior Nick Webb who earned FirstTeam All-Big Sky honors. In 2009 the Wildcat’s were second in theBig Sky Conference in scoring defense, allowing 21.7 points pergame and second in passing efficiency defense allowing teams arating of just 120.8. The ‘Cats were third in total defense allowing375.8 yards per game. In his first year overseeing the linebackers,Taylor Sedillo earned First Team All-Big Sky honors and led theWildcats in total tackles with 100.Swan spent three years coaching the WSU safeties. One ofSwan’s pupils, Ty Sparrow, led the Wildcats in total tackles in 2007.Sparrow was named First Team All-Big Sky. Another of Swan’ssafeties, Beau Hadley, earned First Team All-Big Sky and ThirdTeam All-America in 2008. Swan’s safeties were part of secondarywhich helped the Wildcats lead the Big Sky Conference in PassDefense allowing just 212.2 passing yards per game by opponentsin 2007.Swan is one of WSU’s successful “walk-on” stories. He came toWSU in 1999 to try out and ended up red-shirting the season. In2000, he played in 10 games, mostly on special teams, and had 12tackles. Between the 2000 and 2001 season, he worked extremelyhard in the weight room and went from 190 pounds to a solid 210.He became a starter in the last five games of his sophomore seasonin 2001, registering 60 tackles.As a junior in 2002, he became a full-time starter earning ascholarship. He was named Honorable Mention All-Big Sky Conferenceand led the Wildcats with 89 total tackles. He was amainstay on the 2003 team which posted an 8-4 record. He wasvoted Second Team All-Big Sky Conference after he recorded 109total tackles (54 unassisted), had three forced fumbles and an interception.He was also a three-time member of the Big Sky All-Academicteam. He left WSU with 135 career unassisted tackles, which tieshim for 6th on the WSU career charts.His younger brother, Clayton “Biff” Swan, transferred to WSUfrom Utah <strong>State</strong> and played two seasons (2007-2008) for the Wildcats.Jason Beck begins his third season under Coach Ron McBride onthe Wildcat staff. Beck coaches the WSU quarterbacks.For the past three season Beck has coached WSU quarterbackCameron Higgins. Higgins completed his four-year standout careeras one of the top players in <strong>Weber</strong> <strong>State</strong> history. He set schoolrecords for most career passing yards (12,274), most career touchdownspasses (98), most career total touchdowns (105), most careerpass completions (935), and career passing efficiency rating(144.5). His 98 career touchdown passes is also the most in BigSky Conference history. His 12,261 yards of total offense is thethird most in Big Sky history and his 105 touchdowns is tied for thesecond most in the conference history.Beck came to <strong>Weber</strong> <strong>State</strong> after serving the 2008 season as agraduate at Louisiana <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> assisting former BYU headcoach, Gary Crowton, with the Tiger offense. Beck assisted in coordinationof the passing game. The Bayou Tigers averaged 38.6points per game in 2008 and set 10 offensive school records.Prior to his stint at LSU, Beck served as a graduate assistantat BYU under Coach Bronco Mendenhall. He was responsible forcoaching and running the “scout team” each week and breakingdown film for coaches to used in scouting opponents.The Cougars were 2006 and 2007 Mountain West Conferencechampions during his coaching tenure in Provo and were the topranked offensive team in the league both seasons.Beck played three seasons for BYU after transferring from theCollege of the Canyons. Beck served as the primary backup toJohn Beck. In 2004, he led College of the Canyons to an undefeatedseason and a number one ranking in the California JC systemand was named to the JUCO All-America team both athleticallyand academically as a sophomore. He spent his freshman seasonat Ventura JC. He played high school football at Hueneme HighSchool in his hometown of Oxnard, California. After graduating,Beck left to serve a two-year LDS Church mission to Denver, Coloradobefore embarking on his collegiate football career.Beck earned a bachelor’s degree from BYU in Communicationsin 2006 and is currently working on a Master’s Communicationsfrom BYU.
