Opti<strong>on</strong>s that appeals to a wide cross secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> people are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gnetwork<strong>in</strong>g across sectors are <strong>on</strong> the rise and <strong>in</strong>n orati<strong>on</strong>s are the order <strong>of</strong> the day, In the midst <strong>of</strong> thistransformati<strong>on</strong>. It is time that the <strong>in</strong>dustry takes a close look at the challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g it. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>study</str<strong>on</strong>g> aims atidentify<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>hotels</strong> that are preferred by the tourists, also the reas<strong>on</strong> for the change <strong>in</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> <strong>hotels</strong> by thetourists and how <strong>hotels</strong> are chang<strong>in</strong>g their services accord<strong>in</strong>g to the customer (or) tourists.INTRODUCTIONAggressive pursuit <strong>of</strong> tourists and thereunrestricted access it putt<strong>in</strong>g under stra<strong>in</strong> the ecology <strong>of</strong>the places where mass tourism prevails. Transport,stay and visit <strong>of</strong> tourists all are c<strong>on</strong>tribut<strong>in</strong>g to theerosi<strong>on</strong> prist<strong>in</strong>e form. A callous attitude towardspreserv<strong>in</strong>g the ecological balance <strong>on</strong> the part <strong>of</strong> tourismboards and irreverence <strong>of</strong> visitors to the localecosystem are to be blamed. A STUDY ON TOURIST'S PREFERENCE OF HOTELS IN TIRUCHIRAPPALLI, TAMIL NADUx2 0.005 for 8 degree <strong>of</strong> freedom: 9.488The calculated value is higher than table value andhence hypothesis is rejected.To the extent <strong>of</strong> 95% <strong>of</strong> accuracy there exists arelati<strong>on</strong>ship between regi<strong>on</strong> and choice <strong>of</strong> hotel.FINDINGSThe <str<strong>on</strong>g>study</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>of</strong> tourist <strong>preference</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hotels reveals thefollow<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs.Ø Tourists came from all over the world, namely56% are <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al, 28% are nati<strong>on</strong>al and 16% arelocal tourists.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> the local tourists stay for a period<strong>of</strong> 2 – 4 days and <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al tourists for a period 4 – 6days and more than weeks.Ø The ma<strong>in</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> visit <strong>of</strong> local tourists andnati<strong>on</strong>al tourists is for bus<strong>in</strong>ess c<strong>on</strong>ference as aga<strong>in</strong>stthe majority <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al tourists is for visit<strong>in</strong>gfriends and relatives.Ø 75% <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al tourists travel by airbus aga<strong>in</strong>st 35.71% <strong>of</strong> the nati<strong>on</strong>al tourists travel bytra<strong>in</strong> & executive cab. 50% <strong>of</strong> the local tourists bytra<strong>in</strong>.Ø The ma<strong>in</strong> reas<strong>on</strong> for switch<strong>in</strong>g to other <strong>hotels</strong> isfor majority to other services and for majority <strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>al tourists because it is arranged by the host.Ø The <str<strong>on</strong>g>study</str<strong>on</strong>g> reveals that 42% <strong>of</strong> the tourism arebetween the age group <strong>of</strong> 25 – 30 year and <strong>on</strong>ly 10%above 50 years.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>dents above 50 years whostay for a period <strong>of</strong> more than week as aga<strong>in</strong>st thosebetween the age bracket 40 – 50 years, majority stay fora period <strong>of</strong> 4 – 6 days.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>dents 30 – 40 years travelsfor bus<strong>in</strong>ess / c<strong>on</strong>ference and those 20 – 40 years forpleasure, visit friends / relative functi<strong>on</strong>.Ø The <str<strong>on</strong>g>study</str<strong>on</strong>g> reveals that 100% <strong>of</strong> tourists above50 years switch <strong>hotels</strong> for reas<strong>on</strong> for near by bus<strong>in</strong>essarea and 50% 30 – 40 years and 80% <strong>of</strong> those between40 – 50 years arranged by host.Ø 66.67% <strong>of</strong> tourists 40 – 50 years prefer to stay<strong>in</strong> a hotel sangam, 33.33% <strong>of</strong> those between above 50years stay <strong>in</strong> hotel Breeze Residency, 30.77% <strong>of</strong> thosebetween 30 – 40 years prefer to hotel sangam and31.82% <strong>of</strong> those between 20 – 30 years.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> the tourists are males.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> the males stay for a period 4 – 6days as aga<strong>in</strong>st their counter parts who stay for a period<strong>of</strong> 4 – 6 days.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> the females' tour for visit friends /relative functi<strong>on</strong> as aga<strong>in</strong>st the males whose ma<strong>in</strong>purpose bus<strong>in</strong>ess / c<strong>on</strong>ference.Ø Most <strong>of</strong> the males switch <strong>hotels</strong> due to travelagency attached to hotel, where as females for otherservices.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> the males prefer stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>hotels</strong>angam followed by hotel mayas and the females preferto stay at <strong>hotels</strong> other than specified followed by hotelmayas.ØMajority <strong>of</strong> the tourists earn an annual <strong>in</strong>comeIndian Streams Reserach JournalVol.1,Issue.XI/Dec; 2011<strong>of</strong> Rs.1 – 2 lakhs an very meager percentage <strong>of</strong> themearn Rs.50, 000.Ø Many <strong>of</strong> the resp<strong>on</strong>dents who earn below 1,50,000 stay for a period <strong>of</strong> more than 7 days <strong>on</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>stthose who earn above 2 lakhs stay for a period <strong>of</strong> morethan week.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> the resp<strong>on</strong>dents earn<strong>in</strong>g below 2lakhs ma<strong>in</strong>ly travel for bus<strong>in</strong>ess / c<strong>on</strong>fidence and thoseearn<strong>in</strong>g above 2 lakhs for bus<strong>in</strong>ess / c<strong>on</strong>ference.Ø The <str<strong>on</strong>g>study</str<strong>on</strong>g> shows that majority <strong>of</strong> those earn<strong>in</strong>gabove 2 lakhs switch <strong>hotels</strong> for travel agency attachedto hotel, those earn<strong>in</strong>g Rs.50, 000 and Rs.50, 000 –Rs.1, 00,000 switches due to nearness and bus<strong>in</strong>essarea.Ø The <str<strong>on</strong>g>study</str<strong>on</strong>g> reveals that <strong>of</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>dents <strong>in</strong>volved77.77% <strong>of</strong> those earn<strong>in</strong>g above 2 lakhs prefer to stay <strong>in</strong><strong>hotels</strong> other than those menti<strong>on</strong>ed Rs.50, 000 where asthose earn<strong>in</strong>g between 5,000 – 10,000 prefer stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>hotel Breeze Residency those earn<strong>in</strong>g above Rs.2 lakhsmajority prefer hotel Sangam.Ø Majority <strong>of</strong> the tourists seem stratified withtheir choice <strong>of</strong> hotel, except 11.90% from <strong>hotels</strong> otherthan those menti<strong>on</strong>ed seem dissatisfied with theirchoice <strong>of</strong> hotel.Ø The <str<strong>on</strong>g>study</str<strong>on</strong>g> reveals that 40% <strong>of</strong> tourists put up <strong>in</strong>unclassified <strong>hotels</strong> have an expenditure <strong>of</strong> Rs.10, 000 –Rs.15, 000 dur<strong>in</strong>g their period <strong>of</strong> stay.Ø Whereas majority <strong>of</strong> those stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> hotelSangam / Breeze Residency <strong>in</strong> were an expenditure <strong>of</strong>Rs.5, 000 –Rs.10, 000 and less than 5,000. It is foundthat the stay the more expensive it is.Majority <strong>of</strong> those stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Sangam, Jenney's andFem<strong>in</strong>a face the problem <strong>of</strong> high rent.SUGGESTIONSTo the Governmentü Remove the rigid by laws regard<strong>in</strong>g thec<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>hotels</strong>.ü Offer subsidy loans to motivate the privatesector.ü Improve the room capacity.ü Increase air seat capacity.ü Allow foreign airl<strong>in</strong>es to <strong>in</strong>crease their flightwithout reciprocity.ü Introduce VISA <strong>on</strong> arrival schemes.ü Rati<strong>on</strong>alize the tax structure.To the Hotel Managersü A serious attempt should be made by themanagers to keep their <strong>hotels</strong> and its envir<strong>on</strong>ment cleanand attractive.ü The hotel staff should have a pleasant andpleas<strong>in</strong>g attitude towards its customers so as to satisfytheir needs.ü The services <strong>of</strong>fered should be able to providenecessary <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> regard<strong>in</strong>g the places <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terestwith<strong>in</strong> the city, foreign exchange rates etcü The <strong>hotels</strong> staff should be able to communicatefluently <strong>in</strong> English and have basics knowledge <strong>of</strong> thelanguage <strong>of</strong> the various tourists.ü It would be pr<strong>of</strong>itable to hotel managers toISRJ (4),
