BRITISH COLUMBIA PORTFOLIO
SPRING/SUMMER 2008

Foreward
In September 1967, my father Carmine D’Onofrio opened the family shoe import business
in earnest with the signature location on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive, the focal point of
the city’s Italian community. With an unwavering dedication to quality, value and service,
Kalena’s Shoes thrived. Over the years, many in the Italian community voiced their opinion
that with the containers of shoes already coming over from Italy, perhaps the family business
should expand to include wines from the homeland. After all, the selection of Italian
wines in the market at the time did leave room for improvement. In 1991, Stile Wines
was born.
The name ‘Stile’ ―pronounced ‘Stee-lay’ in Italian‖, corresponding to its English counterpart
‘style’, was chosen not only to represent the stylish wines that became part of the portfolio,
but also to reflect the culture of incorporating wine stylishly as part of enjoying life to the
fullest.
Over time, the list of highly regarded Italian producers working with Stile grew, to the extent
that Stile Wines became synonymous with Italian wine. To this day, we are proud to
say that we offer one of the very finest portfolios of Italian wine in Canada.
Along the way, we have strived to add products from reputable producers from all over the
world, always keeping in mind our goal of offering the absolute best possible quality and
value. While we will undoubtedly always be viewed as an Italian specialist, we can now lay
claim to being a truly diversified, international importer.
My father passed away in 2005, but his spirit remains very much alive in all that we do.
We are happy to know that the fine products that we bring to this special part of the world
have brought joy and a real appreciation for the finer things in life to so many.
With this in mind, we invite you to peruse the latest catalogue of fine offerings from our
agency.
Grazie e buon santé,
ANDREW PEACE
Founded in 1975, Bodega y Cavas de Weinert is located in Lujan de Cuyo,
Argentina´s cradle for top quality wines. The original 1890 Spanish colonial building,
reminiscent of an old winery owned by the family Otero until 1920, catches the eye by
its beauty, inviting those who pass by to know what it guards inside.
Don Bernardo C. Weinert, founder and owner, could be defined as an entrepreneur.
Born in a small German colony in Southern Brazil, he built his name around
international transport in South America. Fascinated by the world of wine, he decided
to found his own winery in Argentina with one unconditional philosophy: producing
high quality wines.
VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
The business began as a vineyard in 1980, then became a full fledged winery in
1995. The first year grape intake of 3,000 tonnes has grown steadily each year to
the 16,250 tonnes crushed in 2003, ranking it 17th in Australia. The winery is 14th
largest based on export sales volume.
Designed and constructed by Andrew Peace, the winery has an emphasis on an even
flow of must and juice, with minimal oxygen contact to ensure maximum quality and
fruit flavour retention. Despite its size, Andrew Peace Wines remains a family operation,
with great care and attention paid to all facets of wine production. The results
are consistent, robust wines with all of the character and flavour that wine lovers
around the world have come to expect from vineyards Down Under. The new 1 litre
Tetra Pak wines are a particularly exciting venture.
TWO HANDS
BAROSSA VALLEY, AUSTRALIA
Two Hands is one of Australia’s most decorated wineries, making its most sought after
wines. The ‘two hands’ are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, who formed the company
in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz wines from
prized Shiraz producing regions within Australia.
Michael Twelftree’s background included years of exporting Australian wine to USA and
Asia, while Richard Mintz was a former CEO of one of Australia’s leading cooperages in
the Barossa Valley. The two old friends set out in 2000 with just 17 tonnes of fruit
from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the start, the wines were
well received with a healthy stream of reviews, culminating with Robert Parker’s 2::4
declaration of Two Hands as ‘the finest negociant operation south of the equator’.
Two Hands concentrates its efforts on sourcing the best fruit from the best Shiraz vineyards
in Australia, working with its growers on achieving the full potential from each
individual site. The results speak for themselves.
PIKES
CLARE VALLEY, AUSTRALIA
Englishman Henry Pike immigrated to South Australia in 1878, and settled
in the small town of Oakbank in the Adelaide Hills. In 1886, he established
the family brewing business called H. Pike & Co. This name became well
known throughout South Australia for its quality beer, soft drink and tonic
ale, and the company used the English Pike fish on the label, which remains
to this day—a symbol of Pikes’ long heritage.
The sale of the company did not end the family tradition. Henry Pike’s
great grandson Edgar was well established in the wine industry, and his
sons Andrew and Neil both followed in their father’s footsteps, establishing
Pikes in 1984 in the beautiful Clare Valley. The winery and vineyards are
situated in the historic and picturesque Polish Hill River sub region on the
eastern side of the valley. The climate in this area is cooler and the soils
are quite unique to the rest of the region, attributes that impart distinctive
flavours and aromas to the wines.
Riesling has become the flagship for which Pikes have become best known.
Other varieties produced include Semillon, Viognier, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Shiraz. They have consistently met their goals of producing
absolute top quality varietal wines—worthy of the longstanding distinctive
fish logo that is still found on all Pikes wines.
CHATEAU PECH LATT (100% CERTIFIED ORGANIC)
LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON, FRANCE
The first vines at Chateau Peach-Latt, planted by the monks from the Lagrasse
Abbey that was founded by Charlemagne, can be traced back to 784 A.D. Today,
Chateau Pech-Latt is a 325 hectare estate, of which 100 acres are
planted with vines.
The winery is proud to rank among the pioneers in organic farming, a choice
which stems from their aim to preserve a well balanced and sound
environment. The vineyard is sparsely fertilized, and if so, only with organic
products. Pesticides, weed killers and other synthetic fertilizers are banned.
Thus, Pech-Latt enables wine lovers to maintain a healthy way of life and
discover, on site in Lagrasse, an ideal natural environment, isolated and spared
from pollution.
CHATEAU DE CARAGUILHES (100% CERTIFIED ORGANIC)
Historically, the Corbières region has always been connected with winegrowers
and the making of wine. As of the 12th century, the Abbey of Fontfroide was
taken over by the monks of the Cistercian Order, highly skilled winegrowers who
undertook to restore the art of the vine in the Corbieres once started by the
Phoenicians and furthered by the Romans.
So began the history of the domaine known as Caraguilhes. The famous chateau
that one sees today was constructed in the early 17th century. The vines
still grow in an ideal location known for its exceptional soil quality, with s mixture
of clay and limestone. In 1935, the winery’s new owner became the only grower
to refuse to use insecticides and weed killers or chemical fertilizers—well ahead
of his time. Inspired by the same precision and philosophy, the same love of the
soil and of authenticity, current owner Laurent Max continues this practice.
Since 1990, the organic status of the wines of Caraguiles are formally guaranteed
by ECOCERT.
CANTINA TOLLO
*** WINNER GRAN VINITALY AWARD ***
ABRUZZO, ITALY
Abruzzo is a land where great wine has been made for many centuries. Writers
and poets have sung its praise since the times of ancient Rome. Natural splendour
thrives in Abruzzo, a region which stretches from the mountains to the sea,
and the only in Europe to devote a third of its territory to nature reserves. In this
paradise, Cantina Tollo was founded over 40 years ago with a passion for producing
quality wines that embody the culture of Abruzzo. The gentle breeze from the
Adriatic creates a wonderfully mild climate over the hills of Cantina Tollo, as the
perfect amount of rain and sun helps to produce their signature Montepulciano,
Trebbiano and Cerasuolo wines.
Tollo is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life through a promise that they have
always kept—that its wines tell a story, through aroma, emotion and memory.
PICHIERRI — VINICOLA SAVESE
APULIA, ITALY
The history of this firm is closely connected to the grandfather-figure Gaetano Pichierri,
who farmed the fruitful vineyards of Primitivo. He refined his knowledge of winemaking
in the wine growers' cooperatives of Sava, made famous by its oenologists Don Amerigo
LIBRANDI
CALABRIA, ITALY
The Librandi Winery is headquartered in Ciro Marina, a small Calabrian town on the
Ionian coast, south of the Gulf of Taranto. The area is naturally suited to vine growing,
boasting excellent soil conditions and a favourable geographic position close to the sea
with the Sila Mountains in behind, guaranteeing premium contrast between day and
night temperatures.
Librandi has grown grapes for four centuries, and began bottling in the 1950s. Management
is firmly in family hands, with some technical collaboration with Donato Lanati,
Professor of Oenology at the universities of Torino and Florence.
Librandi is very well known and highly regarded for the production of exemplary wines
from native grape varietals, especially the most ancient of Calabrian vines, Gaglioppo,
known as ‘The Black Prince’, which grows as an elongated cluster of blue-black grapes
with bright reddish reflections. It is known for producing wines of lush fruit character,
long body, and ripe, rich finish.
FEUDI DI SAN GREGORIO
CAMPANIA, ITALY
Feudi di San Gregorio, a symbol of today’s rebirth of fine wine from the south of Italy,
is dedicated to the rediscovery of the unique flavours of the Mediterranean. The
crusade began in the mid-8:’s with the idea of rewriting the history of winemaking in
the Irpinia region. The central concept was to invest in a real future for the great
wines of the South by upholding local traditions and developing their latent potential.
In other words, to take a fresh look at Campania and her native grape varieties—
Aglianico, Fiano, Greco and Falanghina. Over the last ten years, Feudi di San
Gregorio has come to represent the growing reputation of the wines of Irpinia.
Ancient ties have been reinforced by a new interpretation of the potential of the
south of Italy. The will and resources of two local families, united by a single passion,
has breathed new life into this ancient land. These are modern wines with an
ancient soul. They are authentic, while their traditional values are maintained
through the use of modern technology, and impeccable quality standards.
to the production of wines of great impact. Mastroberardino is a steady
and consistent point of reference for the grape growing and winemaking of the
whole Campania region.
The white wines are well balanced, soft and smooth, with a characteristic bouquet.
refined methods of vinification based on physical principles and
electronically controlled temperature during fermentation.
With his pool of respected wine consultants, Massimo di Lenardo
VELENOSI
LATIUM, ITALY
THE MARCHES, ITALY
Ercole Velenosi is an award winning winery founded in 1984 in the Ascoli Piceno province
of the Marches region. It is well known for producing the best wines in the region. The
vineyards are hillside clay soil with excellent exposure. The respect for tradition is apparent
in the vineyard management and winemaking techniques of consulting winemaker Attilio
Pagli.
"Il Brecciarolo" is from the tiny area within the province of Ascoli—the only zone where
Rosso Piceno can take on the "Superiore" designation. Aged in neutral French oak barrels,
it is a typical blend of 55% Montepulciano and 45% Sangiovese. The heartiness of Montepulciano
dominates, while Sangiovese lifts the aromatics and brightens the wine. Currant
flavors, ripe fruit and spices dominate. Produced with the same grape blend, “Roggio Del
Filare” is ‘the big brother’, showing huge aromas and flavours in its profile.
STEFANO FARINA
Stefano
Farina
Azienda Agricola Di Majo Norante is located to the north of the Gargano in
Molise on the estate of the Marquees Norante of Santa Cristina. Since the
1800’s its ancestors have dedicated themselves to vine cultivation (ancient wine
cellars are located under the main town square and the old palace in
Campomarino). In 1968, a modern canteen was constructed, along with the
first replanted vines in the Ramitello zone. This zone has northeastern exposure,
constant summer breezes, a light limestone soil, and a slope toward the
Scabolone and Madonna Grande valleys, combining to create a very favorable
grape growing environment.
Di Majo Norante uses only estate grown grapes, cultivated without the use of
chemical or synthetic additives, yielding a product that can be considered
“biological”. Passion and love for the grapes are combined with the most
advanced technology in farming methods and production facilities.
BROVIA
In the wonderful hills of Barolo, where the landscape begins to take on a different,
more animated guise, there is a family that has always been associated
with wine: the Brovias. This prestigious winery, established in 1863, is settled
in Castiglione Falletto. Brovia always pays attention to the importance of the
“terroir”, with uncompromising attitude to the selection of the finest vineyards
in Langa, The family has been able to acquire great vineyards in the Barolo
growing area: Rocche, Villero and Garblèt Sue’ in Castiglione Falletto, and
Ca’Mia and Brea in Serralunga d’Alba. Thus, the philosophy of Brovia is to propose
great personality Barolos, all similarly made with very specific and clean
characteristics, yet always different among them– Barolos that faithfully reflect
MASCARELLO
Damilano is one of the historical Barolo producing farms, founded over a century
ago by Guiseppe Borgogno, The tradition was kept up by his son-in-law Giacomo
Damilano and with his children, until it was passed on to his four grandchildren,
who very attentively manage their forefathers’ land today. The wines
are renowned for their upright style and the estate is widely appreciated due to
the strictness and passion that accompany all of the company’s activities. The
vineyards are situated in the most famous crus of the Langa region: Cannubi,
Liste, Fossati and Brunate, which are almost entirely cultivated with Nebbiolo da
Barolo.
The members of the Giuseppe Mascarello family have been growing wines for
more than 150 years in the prime Barolo region of Castiglione Falletto, including
the prestigious Monprivato area. They have built on years of family experience
to the present day Mauro Mascarello, who began in 1970 to vinify the
grapes grown on each single vineyard separately, starting with the Monprivato
Nebbiolo. In 1985, the efforts paid off with international recognition of the highest
order. The 1978 vintage Barolo emerged as the best wine in the Forum
Vinorum in London, with the only perfect score, and a ranking higher than not
only 27 other Italian DOC and DOCG reds, but also 56 Châteaux, Grand Cru
and Premier Cru producers, including such celebrated Château names as
Petrus, Margaux, Latour, Lafite, Mouton Rothschild and Haut-Brion. To this
day, the spectacular Barolos of Mascarello are highly decorated and well
sought after by top buyers around the world.
ARGIOLAS
SARDINIA, ITALY
Argiolas has firmly established itself as one of the very top producers from Sardinia,
the newest critics’ darling region of Italy. Sardinia has followed in the footsteps of
Sicily in making a name for itself through producing fabulously aromatic wines from
indigenous grape varietals— at very fair prices.
Argiolas’ history began in 1918, when Francesco Argiolas planted the first vineyard
with the assistance of some returning Italian POWs. But it was Antonio Argiolas,
whose great enthusiasm and experience in viticulture set the stage for greatness,
buying new estates and setting up a modern farm. In the late 197:'s, Antonio’s sons
Franco and Giuseppe reorganized the business in all aspects, from vineyards to cellars.
They chose one of Italy's leading oenologists, Giacomo Tachis, who joined forces
with oenologist Mariano Murru. Now three generations of the Argiolas family are
together: patriarch Antonio (now 97 years old), his two sons and his grandchildren.
CUSUMANO
SICILY, ITALY
The main assets of Cusumano include 140 hectares of family vineyards set in
specific, diverse areas according to microclimatic conditions throughout Sicily; the
constant study of the soil aimed at finding the best varieties to be chosen for their
specific features; and the continuous research from grape growing to winemaking
area. Knowledge of the soils, the constant monitoring of the vines, and the
appropriate balance between production and cultivation are always taken into
account. Alberto and Diego Cusumano have spearheaded a renaissance in Sicilian
wines, garnering international interest in the unique wines from this region.
FIRRIATO
The Firriato winery near Trapani in the northwest of the island was founded in
1985 by the Di Gaetano family and is the personification of the "New Sicily". Starting
with the 1994 vintage, scrupulously selected, ripe grapes from low-yielding,
hillside vineyards have been vinified by a team of local and antipodean winemakers.
The only aim was quality, using indigenous Sicilian and international grape varieties.
Seven years with continuous growth, global distribution, and many medals
and awards under their belt ―including ‘Best Italian Winery’ by Luca Maroni in
2007), Firriato truly is putting Sicily on the map!
FERRARI
TRENTINO - ALTO ADIGE, ITALY
“The history of a wine lies in the history of the soil that nourishes the vines.” In
1902, after several years studying winemaking and viticulture in France, Giulio
Ferrari decided to challenge his French counterparts with his winemaking skills on
his own land. In the process, he created a masterpiece.
The leadership of Casa Ferrari was passed from the founder to the Lunelli family in
1952. The names have changed, but the enthusiasm has remained the same.
A century of history and Ferrari is the best selling, most recognized and most
celebrated Italian spumante in the world. The year 2002 marked the 50th
anniversary of the Ferrari-Lunelli hand off, and a new century has begun.
TENUTA SAN LEONARDO
The history of Tenuta San Leonardo dates back at least 1500 years, with the return
of prisoners from Trentino, who erected a chapel in honor of the patron
saint of prisoners, Saint Leonard. In the 12th century, the Fratres Cruciferi, an
order with adherents all over Europe and which remained at San Leonardo until
1656, expanded grape growing and adopted a modern approach to viticulture at
the monastery. Today, the ancient monastery hospice, which once gave shelter
to the destitute, is now the cellar where the wines mature in barrels.
The estate has witnessed many historical events, including acting as headquarters
in both world wars; first, of the high command of the Italian 29th army corps
in WWI (Austria made a formal request for an armistice to be held on the
grounds), and in the Second World War, of the counterespionage section of the
German high command on the Italian front.
Present owners the Guerrieri Gonzaga family have taken advantage of the specific
terroir to create Bordeaux-inspired blended wines, under the guidance of
master winemaker Carlo Ferrini and consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis, who
is considered to be a genuine maestro of Italian winemaking through his creation
of some of Tuscany’s most influential wines from the 197:s onwards.
This talented pair ensures calculated ageing—at least six months in large format
Slavonian oak, then 24 months in small French oak barrels—and masterful blending
of each contributing varietal. This is followed by at least one year of bottle
ageing. The results are consistently nothing short of spectacular.
ALTESINO
TUSCANY, ITALY
Altesino is a highly regarded, world class winery situated northeast of Montalcino
and covering an area of approximately 64 hectares. The vineyards cover an area of
approximately 27 hectares, divided into three different sub zones called Altesino, La
Velona and Montosoli. The grape variety Sangiovese di Montalcino makes up the
largest part of the vineyards, as it is used for Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di
Montalcino and Palazzo Altesi. Altesino has always been determined to produce
wines of the highest quality possible; thus, the aging requirements for Brunello di
Montalcino are even more stressed in the Altesino cellars.
maps. The vineyards of the Caparzo Estate include 85 hectares in Montalcino
itself and 4 hectares in Buonconvento. More than 30 years have passed
since the first rows were planted. Tenuta Caparzo aims to ensure top quality
products through meticulous, craftsmanlike techniques, while equally taking a
modern approach to efficiency and innovation. It has kept faith with the traditions
of Brunello and the various local terroirs, at the same time enhancing its wines
with creative spirit and dedication to innovation to ensure the highest possible
quality. This is why Caparzo wines are served by the most famous restaurants in
CARPINETA FONTALPINO
TUSCANY, ITALY
FATTORIA LAVACCHIO (100% CERTIFIED ORGANIC)
Fattoria Lavacchio is an established organic farm, producing wine and olive
oil in the Chianti Rufina region of Italy. Approximately 80 per cent of the
vineyards are composed of selected clones of Sangiovese. The other red
berry vines include mainly Merlot, some Cabernet Sauvignon and in the very
young vineyards, some Syrah. All of Fattoria Lavacchio’s vineyards are
100% certified organic by the European Union and Ecocert.
Grape picking is carried out by hand according to old country traditions, for
the best product quality. The limited production imposed by biological cultivation
guarantees above all a better quality the year later. Products are
only proposed in vintage years in which they reach their best researched
characteristics. The composition of the land, rich in structure and marl,
together with the climate of the area, contribute to the high quality level of
our wines. These are recognizable for the typical mark which links this to
the production territory.
PINO (the fountain with the pine trees of Montaperti). The vineyard is located in
the heart of Tuscany close to Siena, in a region that is rich in history, legends and
love. The owners are sister Gioia—the oenologist—and brother Filippo—the vineyard
cultivator and business director. They are aided by the rest of the Cresti
family. With 19 hectares under vines, the winery has the luxury of a large selection
MIONETTO
THE VENETO, ITALY
Few lands identify themselves like Valdobbiadene so totally and directly with a
completely special "drinking philosophy". Try, for example, tasting a glass of
Prosecco - the most renowned "offspring" of these hills. You will feel that you have
been projected into a world which you believed lost forever, where life still proceeds
at a liveable pace and where values remain unchanged: equilibrium and
lightness, elegance and genuineness, delight in getting together and enjoying life.
From Prosecco to Cartizze and many other straightforward, generous wines -
the fascinating history of the vines and wines of Valdobbiadene has trodden a long
path, but it has always been true to itself. You only need to travel along the
Prosecco Road - the first enological route to have been created in Italy - to be
aware of it all. In these places, the savours, nature, everything is still authentic
and incomparable. It is in this land and with this singular tradition that an equally
unique entrepreneurial story has become associated: that of the Mionetto family.
CA’ RUGATE
In 1992, Bottega diversified to create Il Vino dei Poeti (Poets' Wine). These
wines have taken Bottega in a new direction. Originality, creativity and quality
have elevated this winery to the next level. Unique wines such as moscato,
prosecco, and fragolino are the Cantina dei Poeti’s most beloved wines.
Bottega’s Artist edge is clearly expressed in the exceptional presentation of its
products, which invite one to taste the wines.
Ca’ Rugate, established by the Tessari family in 1986, takes its name from the
volcanic hills where most of the vineyards are to be found. The Ca’ Rugate vineyards
cover 40 hectares, 30 of which are located within the commune of Monteforte
d’Alpone in the rugged heart of Soave Classico, with 1: hectares in the
commune of Montecchia di Crosara in nearby Valpolicella. Ca’ Rugate uses only
indigenous grape varieties such as Garganega, and Trebbiano di Soave for white
wines; and Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone for reds.
The Soave wines of Ca Rugate are unique, produced from 100% Garganega
grapes, without blending in Trebbiano or other inexpensive grapes, as is done for
most Soave wines. They also utilize single vineyard production, resulting in wines
that are among the best of their kind, with full, fresh fruit and hints of almonds.
The land on which Anna Spinato’s grapes are grown has been used for that same
purpose since the 12th century. Wine was first produced there, on the banks of
the Piave River, by the monks of the Sant’ Andrea Abbey. Even the Spinato logo tells
of the family’s “passion and love for our culture and the tradition of winemaking.”
Today, the wines reflect all the elegance and unpretentious sophistication that Anna
Spinato herself is so well known for. From its most famous to its less well known
yet no less extraordinary bottlings, Anna Spinato wines have been awarded medals
at such events as Vinitaly, the Japan Wine Challenge, and MIWine of Milan. Indeed,
the popularity of Anna Spinato’s wines is such that Spinato corks are embedded
MORGENHOF
STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA
The beautiful Morgenhof farm has a long and storied history that begins in
1692, when the French Hugenots arrived in the Cape in the 1860s. Many with
winemaking experience came from La Rochelle, the traditional export harbour
for the famous brandies of Cognac. This came full circle in 1993 when Mrs.
Anne Cointreau-Huchon of Cognac purchased the farm, bringing with her a
tremendous wealth of knowledge and expertise. Morgenhof Wine Estate, which
consists of 212 hectares (67 under vine), enjoys the prime location of the
southwestern slopes of the Simonsberg mountains in the Stellenbosch district,
where direct afternoon sun and cool sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean
CHIMNEY ROCK
The story of Chimney Rock is entwined with the story of Napa Valley's Stags
Leap District, home to some of the most elegant Cabernet Sauvignon produced
on American soil. The winery's beginnings hark back to the original
owners' love of Bordeaux. When the late Hack Wilson and his wife Stella
retired after a long career in the beverage industry, they decided to fulfill a
life-long passion and began searching for a winery. Their search started in
South Africa, their home, and continued in France. In 1980, a 185-acre
estate located on the Napa Valley's Silverado Trail and occupied by a golf
course called Chimney Rock, captivated the Wilsons and they decided to
make it home. By this time, the Stags Leap area was already gaining worldwide
attention and acclaim for its Cabernet Sauvignon.
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
Nestled high in the Eastern Hills, Rutherford Hill Winery commands a spectacular
view overlooking the Rutherford bench of Napa Valley. It is from a handful of the
most select Napa vineyards that Rutherford Hill continues its tradition of crafting
legendary wines. In 1976, while the rest of the world was just beginning to take
notice of Napa Valley, the founders of Rutherford Hill recognized a unique opportunity.
They believed that the climate and soil of the valley, similar to Pomerol, were
well suited to Merlot and were among the first to pioneer what has become
Napa's premier varietal. Today, this tradition of quality continues, expressed by
wines of great complexity and character.
DISTILLERIA BOTTEGA
SPIRITS
THE VENETO, ITALY
Distilleria Bottega was set up in 1977 by Aldo Bottega, a master distiller with over 30
years of experience. The distillery began modestly, operating in the local grappa market. In
1983, with the death of its founder, son Sandro took on the management of the company
with the assistance of siblings Barbara and Stefano. In a few years, Distilleria Bottega left
its anonymity, thanks to an innovative distillation system that makes grappa mellower and
more delicate. In 1987, the Alexander brand joined Bottega; this new brand is intended for
those consumers who have developed a much more educated and refined palate.
All Alexander Grappa has its origin from very fresh and vinous marcs that are distilled in
copper stills following the steam distillation in order to guarantee the highest quality. The
Venetian blown glass bottles, designed by Sandro Bottega, are the ideal container to view
the clarity and transparency of the Alexander Grappa. They were also the object of a
prestigious international exhibition called “Art in Grappa”.
SPRINGBANK DISTILLERS
SPIRITS
Springbank Distillery is a true original in many regards. It is the oldest distillery
in Scotland that survives in the ownership of its founders, the Mitchells,
Scotland’s senior distilling family. The present distillery was built in 1828 on
the site of the previous illicit distillery of Archibald Mitchell. Springbank is the
signature producer of Campbeltown, one of the five recognized production regions
of scotch. It has its own unique and delightful nuances which make it
among the world's best single malt producers.
Springbank is unique amongst Scotland’s distilleries in that all parts of the
production process, from traditional malting to bottling, are carried out at the
one location. Of note, it is the only distillery that has never used chill filtering
and the addition of caramel to add back colour in the production of its fine
malts, ensuring that the essential oils, esthers and proteins are maintained in
the product, guaranteeing whiskies of the finest pure aroma and flavour.
MAGELLAN
SPIRITS
In 1519, five ships led by Ferdinand de Magellan set out to circumnavigate the world
and explore ‘the spice islands’. Three years later, only the ship Victoria returned to
Spain, with 18 people and hundreds of cloves. Sadly, Magellan, who died in battle
during the voyage, never saw the results of his spice discoveries. Those spices inspired
the creation of gin as we know it, and it is to cloves in particular that Magellan
Gin owes its inspired taste.
Created by spirits guru Michel Roux, Magellan Gin is made in small batches in Cognac,
France from triple-distilled neutral spirits, spring water and 11 freeze-dried botanicals,
a mix that includes cloves. During the fourth and final distillation, the gin is
infused with deep-blue Iris petals. The result is a sensationally flavorful, 88 proof spirit
with a captivating, light blue tint. That’s right—the blue is not the bottle. It’s the gin!
Magellan Gin is a bona fide headliner. The gin has a supple,
medium-weight body and an engaging bouquet laced with the
aromas of flora, citrus and spice. It has a delightfully soft entry that quickly entertains
the mouth with a fanciful array of tantalizing flavors. The finish is cool and crisp.
Martini savvy haunts will want to be the first on their block to carry
Magellan Gin. It was created with a cocktail glass in mind. Great looks
and an incomparable taste make Magellan unbeatable.
MEXICO
In 1896, Don Celso Plascencia had a dream. A humble working man born in the
highlands of Jalisco, he worked the land, and as he traveled to and from the fields
that belonged to others, he promised that one day, his family would own their own
estate and make their own tequila, the spirit of Mexico. 100 years later, Don
Celso’s grandson, Raul Plascencia, fulfilled his grandfather’s dream. An entrepreneur,
Raul saved his money and, investing with others, opened Destiladora San
Nicolas in 1998. The distillery blends tradition with technology, creating tequila as
it has been made for generations, using the best blue agave, the clearest water,
and time. They bring the process into the 21st century with a state-of-the-art facility
and modern standards. Don Celso’s dream is now a reality—his vision and heart is
Antigua Distillery has long been the premium distiller of fine rums in The Leeward islands.
As they move into the new century, they are committed to maintaining the high
standards production and packaging that have been developed over recent decades.
The Antigua Distillery Ltd produces high quality rums with the finest all natural ingredients.
The company uses a skillful combination of traditional methods and modern technology
necessary for the best rum production. They continue the tradition of using copper
pipes for its five column continuous copper still that can produce 1.5 million litres a
year around 90% alcohol by volume. Ageing is done in 220 litre American Oak casks
that were previously used for ageing bourbon, covering a time frame of a minimum 2-3
years allowing the "angels" to take their share.
VENEZUELA
Since its foundation in 1796, the history of Hacienda Santa Teresa has been interwoven
with the history of Venezuela. The lands of Santa Teresa have witnessed
the birth of José Rafael Revenga—one of the founding fathers of Venezuela
independence, Simon Bolivar’s ratification of his historic 1818 proclamation
abolishing slavery, and the 1821 defeat of Royalist Troops by General José
Francisco Bermúdez. In 1996, to celebrate its 200th anniversary, the company
since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of
traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for its brewing process has
evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world.
The ‘steam’ reference comes from the fact that the brewery started with no way to
chill the boiling wort, so they pumped it to large open-top bins on the roof for it to be
chilled by the cool air blowing in off the Pacific Ocean. Thus while brewing, the brewery
had a distinct cloud of steam around the roof let off by the wort as it cooled.
