the non-originals have been omitted and the CDre-sequenced for a better flow. It is a very goodthing that such an important part of our heritagewill be available much more readily.Illustration by Nathaniel MesnerSue Foley & Peter Karp He Said She SaidBlind Pig/Stony Plain/Warner MusicFourteen vignettes on their relationship formthis project by these two blues-based singer/songwriters and it brings something a little differentto the CD shelves. They began all this with emailand letter exchanges, hence the Wrycraftcover art. They’ve been touring this show for awhile now and I think this workshopping hascontributed enormously to the success of the disc.Pre-production in Ottawa with Terry Gillespie ledto the two guitarists being joined by various horns& harmonica in some delightful arrangements. But the meat is in the songs: there is much morehonesty here than you might have expected and norecourse to lines from the common tradition – allcontemporary stuff. As befits the theme, most ofthe songs feature one or the other, but the bluesyopener, “Treat Me Right” is a duet that leaves nodoubt that this relationship is going to be amongequals. You’ll appreciate a lot of these vignettes:“Rules of Engagement” particularly. Foley singsa couple of tender ballads and “Valentine’s Day”is gorgeous, a passionate duet with great acousticslide guitar from Karp and finger picked guitarfrom Foley with some lovely harmony vocals.Karp’s “Dear Girl” has a catchy melody that’llstay with you for days. The highlights just go on.Get this one.Little Miss Higgins Across The PlainsOutside MusicThe previous albums have leaned ratherheavily on humourous little songs about livingin the middle of nowhere, aka Nokomis, SK.There are some like that here, most prominently10 MapleBlues May 2010“Bargain! Shop Panties”, but on other songs,Jolene Higgins has impressively pulled outall the stops on her vocals, adding horns to thearrangements. These new songs are clearly fromthe same wellspring, and represent a major leapforward. “Wash These Blues Away” has a longmelody line that she might not have carried off sosuccessfully before. “Snowin’ Today: Lament ForLouis Riel” is the studio version of a song donelive on the last album and begins a sequence thatshows that political activism is still alive and wellin Saskatchewan. It supplies the album’s title aswell. It has also gained a verse in French. “HopeYou Don’t Feel Blue (when I tell you the truth)”and lines such as ‘when they take your tractoraway’ make this one much more forthright andgets some of Miss Higgins’ most impassionedsinging, even over rather long passages of text. The sequence ends with an a capella “GatherMy Fruit”. There’s a tender love song, performedsolo, and then back to the fun stuff with “Glad TheWhiskey Fits Inside My Purse”. It starts as thoughwe’re listening to a 78 rpm disc, which then startsskipping before the rest of the song kicks in, instudio sound. The best is saved for last, with a newversion of the somber “Slaughterhouse”, from thefirst CD. Big Dave McLean contributes harp andTim Williams, mandolin. There’s no fun in thisone but it is a stone solid down home blues. LittleMiss Higgins & Foy Taylor have turned theirlove of thirties blues & pop music into a viablemodern enterprise. With this caliber of singing &songwriting it should last as long as they want it to.They are touring from one coast to the other withthe new CD but don’t get here until Mariposa. Theweb site is www.littlemisshiggins.com.Bobby Dean Blackburn Don’t Ask… Don’tTell Electro-Fi/Outside MusicI reviewed the first version of this disc back inNovember and that review is at the TBS web site. The Electro-Fi version improves on that alreadygood album: it now opens with a new, solo, original, “Are You Ready” and a reprise closes it.“Kitchen Blues”, a wonderful duet with LibertySilver has also been added with some fine dobroplaying from Joel Morelli. There is also a veryfine new slow blues, “Twilight Time”. Two ofThe Steve Strongman Band Live At TheBarn CD/DVD SelfThe Barn is exactly that, a century old one, hiding a modern recording facility. The Barnis listed on its web site as being somewhere inSouthern Ontario. It’s also hiding. The contactis Dave King who also holds the drum chairin The Steve Strongman Band. The last CD,Blues In Colour was recorded there and the ideaof doing a live concert there in front of an invitedaudience was a brilliant one. Steve begins soloand these four performances sound warm andintimate. He invites King and his bass player,Colin Lapsley, up and the concert proper beginswith the trio performing selections from Blues InColour and Honey. “Why Would I Lie”, “TakeMy Arms”, “Soul Searching” and “Honey” getparticularly fine performances but it’s difficultto choose from this set list. Toward the end thereis a lovely introduction to “Shout It Out Loud”,written for a friend who has MS, it brought to mindthat the program could perhaps have benefitedfrom a bit more interaction with the audience - aminor quibble. At sixteen songs, this is an alreadygenerous DVD but the bonus features includean interview segment and four more songs notused in the main program. The Steve StrongmanBand brings a new level of intensity to a liveperformance and that intensity is well capturedhere. Dave King directed but with him at the drumkit, he obviously prepared his camera crew well.Their camera work, the editing, the audio are alltop notch. Steve Strongman is the 2009 winner ofthe Mel Brown Blues Award, presented by theGrand River Blues Society. This document showsit was a wise choice. If you don’t have his CDsyet, this is the place to start. His web site is www.stevestrongman.com.

Matt Andersen Live From The PhoenixTheatre Busted Flat/UniversalThe Globe and Mail has called him the biggestthrill in Canadian blues since Jeff Healey andwhile that statement was partly a pun (Andersenis six-foot-two and 400 lbs) it was also a ravereview of his live show at the Glenn GouldStudio in February. Andersen obviously thrivesin a live setting, the energy & charisma behindhis powerful voice, combined with his very goodmaterial entirely justifies the Globe’s statement. This CD is more than a document of a wonderfullive show, however. Andersen was close to home, the Phoenix is in St. John NB, and he was ableto bring some friends along: Ian Sherwood ontenor sax, Thom Swift (lead guitar on “To LeaveWhat Should Be Left Alone”), Scott Hupman,Ryan Hupman (on “Have You Got The Blues”)(Congratulations to The Hupman Brothers forwinning the Blues Album of the Year at the EastCoast Music Awards for Countin’ Quarters.) &Mike Stevens (on “I Play The Fool For You” &“Devil’s Bride”) plus a string quartet (on “Bold& Beaten”). The audience, completely won over, joins in enthusiastically on the closing “RoundAnd Round”. If you didn’t have any of Andersen’sprevious albums, this handy career-summing discis the one to get. It seems the show will be availableon DVD as well, look for that too. Check his website at www.stubbyfingers.ca.smoking. It would seem he’s singing from deeppersonal experience. The one non-original is afine performance of the Carter Family song, “NoDepression In Heaven”. He writes that he did thissong because he remembered family singalongsas a child. They are obviously fond memories.Swift & Charles Austin produced and they havedone a marvelous job. The seamless weaving ofacoustic & electric instruments is some of the mostpleasing I’ve heard.singer, with a superb sense of the blues. His choiceof Rice Miller & Jimmy Reed songs, carriedoff with aplomb, set the tone from the opener onthrough. Steve Pineo’s “Canadian Man” addssome contemporary sounds. His harmonica work is always concise andappropriate, an essential element in this repertoireand Guest’s piano is simply magnificent: he seemsto be enjoying himself immensely supplying allthe accompaniment a singer might need. Mentionshould also be made of Duke Ellington’s “Don’tGet Around Much Anymore” which allows theduo to show another side of their playing. If youdidn’t get a copy of their CD while they were here,go to www.harpdogbrown.com.-John Valenteynjvalenteyn8724@rogers.comThom Swift blue sky day Ground Swell/Warner MusicSwift returns the favour on his second soloCD, inviting Andersen to sing harmony vocalsthroughout and very helpfully on “Blue Sky”.Swift’s disc is a collection of fine new songs and hehas assembled a stellar band to help deliver them, led by master percussionist Geoff Arsenault andkeyboard ace Bill Stevenson. The stand out songsfor me are the opening “Stand Tall (when you’reoverwhelmed)”; the bluesy “One Way Track”,urging today’s youth to be pro-active, with Swift onelectric slide guitar & National Steel and “Killer”, asolid rocker urging people to persevere in quittingHarpdog Brown & Graham Guest Aboveand Beyond Dog BreathBy all accounts, it was an impressive visitfrom these Edmonton natives to show off theirnew disc. With Harpdog on vocals & harmonicaand Guest on piano we have another on our list ofall-too-rare such acoustic gems.
