The Office <strong>of</strong> NIH <strong>History</strong> and Stetten Museum at<br />
<strong>the</strong> National <strong>In</strong>stitutes <strong>of</strong> Health is pleased to<br />
announce <strong>the</strong> appointment <strong>of</strong> Joseph A. November as<br />
<strong>the</strong> next DeWitt Stetten, Jr., Memorial Fellow in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> Biomedical Sciences and <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />
Joseph November, who will receive his Ph.D. from<br />
Princeton University this summer, plans to join <strong>the</strong><br />
University <strong>of</strong> South Carolina as an Assistant<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in <strong>History</strong>. He will spend his fellowship<br />
year (2007-2008) at <strong>the</strong> NIH conducting research<br />
sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Center <strong>for</strong> <strong>In</strong><strong>for</strong>mation <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />
His project is titled: "Planting <strong>the</strong> Seeds: How <strong>the</strong><br />
NIH Cultivated Biomedical<br />
Computing."<br />

SMITHSONIAN FELLOWS<br />
The Smithsonian's Lemelson Center is pleased to<br />
announce four new fellows selected <strong>for</strong> 2006.<br />
Hyungsub Choi (Ph.D. Candidate, Johns Hopkins<br />
University) is writing his dissertation on transistor<br />
development and manufacturing in <strong>the</strong> United States<br />
and Japan. Joseph Corn (Senior Lecturer, Stan<strong>for</strong>d<br />
University) will be doing research <strong>for</strong> his upcoming<br />
book User-Unfriendly: Consumer Struggles with<br />
Personal <strong>Technology</strong>. Mara Mills' (Ph.D. Candidate,<br />
Harvard University) dissertation analyses <strong>the</strong><br />
contributions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deaf and hard-<strong>of</strong>-hearing to <strong>the</strong><br />
development <strong>of</strong> technologies <strong>for</strong> amplification, sound<br />
inscription, and speech syn<strong>the</strong>sis. And Dominique<br />
Tobbell (Ph.D. Candidate, University <strong>of</strong><br />
Pennsylvania) will examine <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> several<br />
pharmaceutical companies <strong>for</strong> her dissertation on <strong>the</strong><br />
political economy <strong>of</strong> drug development in <strong>the</strong> United<br />

5 th IWHA Conference<br />
“Pasts and Futures <strong>of</strong> Water”<br />
June 13-17, 2007<br />
The <strong>In</strong>ternational Water <strong>History</strong> Association<br />
(IWHA) will hold its 5 th biennial<br />
conference from June 13-17, 2007 in Tampere,<br />
Finland with <strong>the</strong> general <strong>the</strong>me “Pasts and Futures<br />
<strong>of</strong> Water”. The event is co-organized and hosted<br />
by University <strong>of</strong> Tampere (Dept. <strong>of</strong> <strong>History</strong>) and<br />
Tampere University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>, TUT<br />
(<strong>In</strong>stitute <strong>of</strong> Environmental Engineering and<br />
Biotechnology, IEEB).<br />
The major <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conference are:<br />
(i) Water and <strong>the</strong> City<br />
(ii) Water, Health and Sanitation<br />
(iii) Water, Food and Economy<br />
(iv) Water history and <strong>the</strong> Future <strong>of</strong><br />
Humanity.<br />
