EVENTS HOSTED BY SHOT<br />

SHOT Presidential Address:<br />

On Thursday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m., in <strong>the</strong> Imperial<br />

Palace hotel, SHOT president Rosalind Williams will<br />

deliver <strong>the</strong> SHOT Presidential Address. All meeting<br />

attendees are welcome.<br />

SHOT Welcoming Reception:<br />

On Thursday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m., following <strong>the</strong><br />

Presidential Address, SHOT invites all meeting<br />

attendees to come to our welcoming reception. <strong>This</strong><br />

reception will be held in <strong>the</strong> Imperial Palace hotel’s<br />

famous Auto Collection, and attendees will have <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunity to view <strong>the</strong> many cars on display. <strong>This</strong><br />

reception is free <strong>for</strong> all SHOT meeting registrants, but<br />

please indicate your attendance on <strong>the</strong> conference<br />

registration <strong>for</strong>m.<br />

SHOT Reception and Special Session:<br />

On Friday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m., at <strong>the</strong> Atomic<br />

Testing Museum, SHOT will host a reception and a<br />

special session on <strong>the</strong> topic, “Challenges in<br />

Preserving and <strong>In</strong>terpreting Atomic <strong>History</strong>.”<br />

Attendees will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to explore <strong>the</strong><br />

Atomic Testing Museum’s exhibits. You can find<br />

more in<strong>for</strong>mation about <strong>the</strong> Atomic Testing Museum<br />

at http://www.atomictestingmuseum.org/ SHOT will<br />

have buses running to take you between <strong>the</strong> Atomic<br />

Testing Museum and <strong>the</strong> Imperial Palace hotel. The<br />

cost <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> special session and reception is $5 <strong>for</strong><br />

SHOT meeting registrants, and admission is by ticket<br />

only. If you are interested in attending, please sign up<br />

on <strong>the</strong> conference registration <strong>for</strong>m.<br />

Current Graduate Students and Current<br />

<strong>In</strong>ternational Scholars Breakfast:<br />

On Saturday, October 14 at 8:00 a.m., <strong>the</strong> SHOT<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers will host <strong>the</strong>ir annual breakfast <strong>for</strong> currentlyenrolled<br />

graduate students and current SHOT<br />

<strong>In</strong>ternational Scholars. <strong>This</strong> breakfast will be in <strong>the</strong><br />

conference hotel and will feature a deluxe continental<br />

breakfast. <strong>This</strong> event will <strong>of</strong>fer graduate students and<br />

international scholars a chance to meet each o<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

talk with SHOT <strong>of</strong>ficers, to learn about SHOT<br />

programs (including prizes and fellowships), and to<br />

find out more about SHOT’s journal <strong>Technology</strong> and<br />

Culture. <strong>This</strong> breakfast is free <strong>for</strong> currently-enrolled<br />

graduate students and our current SHOT international<br />

scholars (please do not sign up if you do not fit <strong>the</strong>se<br />

categories). Space is limited to <strong>the</strong> first fifty graduate<br />

students and <strong>In</strong>ternational Scholars to sign up. You<br />

must register <strong>for</strong> this event in order to attend; please<br />

indicate your attendance on <strong>the</strong> conference<br />

registration <strong>for</strong>m.<br />

SHOT Awards Banquet:<br />

On Saturday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m., SHOT invites<br />

you to attend <strong>the</strong> annual Awards Banquet, to be held<br />

in <strong>the</strong> ballroom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conference hotel, <strong>the</strong> Imperial<br />

Palace Las Vegas. <strong>This</strong> is a wonderful opportunity to<br />

enjoy a relaxing evening with old and new friends, to<br />

show our appreciation to <strong>the</strong> SHOT community, and<br />

to honor <strong>the</strong> recipients <strong>of</strong> SHOT’s annual prizes and<br />

fellowships. The banquet will feature a fabulous<br />

Vegas buffet, <strong>the</strong> Imperial Palace Italian Feast,<br />

including soup, salad, antipasto platters, pizza, and an<br />

incredible variety <strong>of</strong> meat, seafood, vegetarian, and<br />

pasta entrees, plus a dessert presentation <strong>of</strong> cannolis,<br />

cheesecake, chocolate biscotti, fruit, and zabaglione.<br />

SHOT will provide two complimentary bottles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

house wines, one red and one white, <strong>for</strong> each table.<br />

Tables may purchase additional bottles from <strong>the</strong> bar if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wish. Please sign up <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> banquet on <strong>the</strong><br />

conference registration <strong>for</strong>m; tickets are $55 a person,<br />

and you must register <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> banquet in order to<br />

attend.<br />

Tour 1<br />

TOURS<br />

Hoover Dam: Who can pass up <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

visit <strong>the</strong> Eighth Wonder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World? The world’s<br />

largest dam at its completion in 1935, Hoover Dam<br />

may still be <strong>the</strong> most famous. Although ordinary<br />

tourists now have to settle <strong>for</strong> an abbreviated tour<br />

thanks to <strong>the</strong> new security regulations following 9/11,<br />

SHOT members will get <strong>the</strong> VIP treatment, what<br />

used to be called <strong>the</strong> “Hard Hat Tour”. I’m not sure<br />

if you still get to keep <strong>the</strong> hard hat, but you will get<br />

an extensive look at <strong>the</strong> interior sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dam.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> dam tour, we will stop at <strong>the</strong> Boulder City<br />

Museum, where director Dennis McBride, co-author
