PICS Consumer ParticipationPlan 2011-12In 2010, as part of the Department ofHealth requirements, the PICS developeda Consumer Participation Plan for 2011-12.The Plan outlines a set of principles andactivities that aim to ensure consumersof the health services are active participantsin their treatment and engaged in futureservice planning. The aim of the plan is toguide the health services engagementwith consumers, carers andcommunity members.The Plan was developed in consultationwith consumers of the health servicesthrough the Children’s Cancer CentresParent Advisory Group (CCCPAG), as well ashealth professionals from the RCH, MonashChildren’s and Peter Mac. The vision ofthe PICS Consumer Participation Plan is topromote a child and family-centred modelof care where children and families areactive participants in their care and infuture service planning and delivery.The objectives of the plan are to:● Meet priority 1.3 of the PICS StrategicPlan 2009-12, which is to strengthen theinput of patients and families to servicedevelopment● Increase consumer participation inPICS activities, ensuring that consumerparticipation is a core component ofall PICS projects and programs● Assist the PICS partner health servicesdelivering care, including shared carecentres and adult Integrated CancerServices on consumer participationstrategies● Improve documentation, measurementand evaluation of consumerparticipation.The Plan builds on existing consumerparticipation activities and initiativesincluding information provision, trainingand support. Priorities outlined in thePlan include representation on relevantconsumer related committees, continuingsupport of the CCCPAG, formalisedannual review of patient satisfaction,strengthening mechanisms for consumerfeedback, provision of regular andappropriate information to families andthe education and training of consumers.The PICS Supportive Care Grant is aworking example of our commitment toconsumer participation, with the inclusionof consumer representatives on allWorking Groups.Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service (PICS) Annual Report 2010-2011 15
