An introductionto the PICSSince 2003, the Victorian Government hasillustrated a commitment to improvingcancer services through ‘A CancerService Framework for Victoria’ and the‘Victoria’s Cancer Action Plan 2008-2011’. The Framework recommendedthe establishment of Integrated CancerServices (ICS) in both metropolitan andregional areas. This recommendationresulted in the Department of Health (DH)restructuring Victorian cancer services, withthe development of nine ICS includingthree metropolitan, five regional and onestatewide paediatric ICS.The Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service(PICS) was formed as a partnership withThe Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH),Southern Health (now Monash Children’s)and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre(Peter Mac). The PICS aims to ensureconsistency of care and improved qualityof services for children and adolescentsdiagnosed and being treated for cancerthroughout Victoria. The PICS promotesthe development of a cohesive, integrated,coordinated, multidisciplinary approach tothe provision of paediatric cancer servicesthat draw on the best availableevidence and build on state, national andinternational experience of success.The PICS vision is to establish statewidestandards, that will assist the health servicesto work towards providing the best carepossible, extending across the whole cancercare pathway from diagnosis to long-termsurvival or palliation, and through the manydevelopmental stages of the childor adolescent’s life.The PICS is guided by the PICS StrategicPlan 2009-12, released in February 2010. Thegoals and priorities outlined in the StrategicPlan provide a structure for the continueddevelopment of Victorian paediatriconcology services. The Plan outlines fourstrategic goals including:● Goal 1: to facilitate the provision ofsustainable services that are of the highestinternational standard and which are basedon a child and family-centred model ofcare where children and families are activeparticipants in their care● Goal 2: to support quality researchand evaluation with a focus ontranslational research outcomes andto maintain an accessible repositoryof statewide data and information● Goal 3: to support a cohesive andinspired workforce through staff support,professional development and educationand strengthening the workforce● Goal 4: to increase PICS governance,reporting and organisational capability,relationships with philanthropy,support organisations, government andcommunity agencies.The PICS Strategic Plan 2009-12 is availableat www.pics.org.au6Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service (PICS) Annual Report 2010-2011
Our partnersThe PICS formal partners include TheRoyal Children’s Hospital (RCH), MonashChildren’s at Southern Health (SH) and PeterMacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac).The PICS has also established formal sharedcare relationships with seven regionalhealth services, with Peninsula Healthjoining the Regional Outreach and SharedCare Program in 2010. The PICS regionalshared care sites are:● Albury Base Hospital● Ballarat Health Service● Barwon Health● Bendigo Health Care Group● Goulburn Valley Health● Peninsula Health● South West Healthcare.The Royal Children’sHospital (RCH)Vision The Royal Children’s Hospital, aGREAT children’s hospital, leading the way.Service The RCH is the major specialistpaediatric hospital in Victoria with careextending to children from Tasmania,southern New South Wales and otherstates around Australia and overseas.The Children’s Cancer Centre operatesfrom the RCH Parkville, providing complexcancer care including paediatric stemcell transplantation to paediatriconcology patients.Monash Children’s at SouthernHealth (SH)Vision To provide better health for ourcommunity - Southern Health will be anAustralian leader in improving the healthand wellbeing of our community.Service Monash Children’s provides carein the growing south eastern suburbs ofMelbourne. With approximately a quarterof the state’s child population living withinthis catchment area, the Monash Children’sProgram operates from three of SouthernHealth’s major sites serving newborn,child and adolescent needs. The Children’sCancer Centre operates from MonashMedical Centre Clayton, providing complexcancer care to paediatric oncology patientswithin the SH catchment.Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre(Peter Mac)Vision The best in cancer care, acceleratingdiscovery, translating to cures.Service Peter Mac is Australia’s onlypublic hospital solely dedicated to cancer,treating both paediatric and adult oncologypatients from Victoria and Interstate. PeterMac operates five sites across Melbourneand Victoria, with paediatric servicesdelivered from their East Melbournesite.
