It may seem strange tolook back a hundred years on a topic that is so contemporaiy, yet I often find that thepast has valuable lessons for the future. In this case, I was lucky - electric vehicles werestudied and wrtten about extensively early in tbe 20th century, and there ar manybooks on the subject from which to choose. Books wrtten afer 1923 quicklydisappear into a literary hlack hole. With rare exceptions, one can buy them only for thesmall number of years they are in print. Afer that, they are found only in a vanishingnumber of libraries and used book store. As the years pas, contracts get lost andforgotten, authors and publishers disappear, the rights holders become impossible totrckdown.Inevitably, the few remaining copies of the books are left to deteriorale slowly or are lostto fires, floods and other disasters. While I was at Stanford in 1998, floods damaged ordestroyed tens of thousands ofbooks.
