Some for betterpay, others for a chance ata lifelong career. Still thereis one attribute that mostnursing students share—thedesire to help people.Like most nontraditionalcollege students, nursingstudent Greg Sapp workedto balance the demandsof being a college studentwhile trying to make endsmeet for his wife Leeanne, and their three daughters, 6-year-oldDaphne, 3-year-old Ayiana, and 1-yearoldMadelyn, all of Rathdrum. Greg wasentering his second and final year in NIC’snursing program and was well on his wayto reaching his goal when tragedy struckhis family. It was the day after Christmas 2005when the Sapp’s youngest daughterMadelyn woke her parents in the middleof the night. What started as a feverrapidly worsened. In one devastatingnight, the Sapps discovered it was aninfection in the bloodstream that causedtheir 1-year-old daughter to slip into acoma and eventually suffer a massivestroke. Maddie passed away Dec. 28,2005, seven days after her first birthday. While facing such tragedy in his personallife, Greg could have easily decided todrop out prior to his final semester, but the NIC nursing students and staffwouldn’t let him. Greg felt their supportalmost immediately.“We went to school all those years tolearn how to care for other people,”said nursing graduate Dan Franklin ofDalton Gardens, a former classmate ofGreg’s. “So when we had the opportunityto care for one of our own who wasin need, someone in our immediatefamily that was going through the worstgrief imaginable, we were ready to doanything it took. That’s what nursing is allabout.”Greg and Leeanne Sapp with their daughters (left toright) Daphne, Ayiana, and Madelyn.Prior to commencement, the graduatingnursing class of 2006 establisheda memorial scholarship in honor ofMadelyn to be given each year to astruggling second-year nursing student. The class set a goal to raise $5,000,which is the minimum amount needed toendow a scholarship, allowing it to livein perpetuity with the interest earningsof the fund awarded each year as ascholarship.“I can’t express how much it meansto me to have Maddie’s name tied tosomething so positive that will live onforever,” Leeanne said.In just over a month, the scholarshipreached the $5,000 endowment leveland the contributions are still flowingin over a year later. Greg now worksin the Coronary Care Unit of KootenaiMedical Center and more than 30 of hiscoworkers in the unit decided to use aportion of a departmental incentive tocontribute to the fund, which currentlysits at more than $7,000.“This speaks to the kind of people nursesare,” Greg said. “We spend our livestaking care of other people and we alltake care of each other too.”To contribute to the Madelyn IsabellaSapp Memorial Scholarship, send a taxdeductibledonation to the North IdahoCollege Foundation, 1000 W.
