Match-Up II® Shelter Dog Rehoming ProgramMatch-Up II ManualIntroductionThe Match-Up II Shelter Dog Rehoming Program is a multi-partsystem designed to help shelters learn about the personalityand needs of each dog so that behavioral interventions can beimplemented and successful matches can be made. Match-Upstands for the “Marder-Animal Rescue League Test for CanineHoming Using Personality”.The Match-Up II Rehoming Program currently consists of 5 parts:• Behavioral History• Behavior Evaluation• Personality Scores• Behavior in the Shelter• Behavioral TriageThis manual will guide you through all parts of the Match-Up IIShelter Dog Rehoming Program. Although this manual can beused without further instruction, the Center for Shelter Dogsstrongly recommends that you take the CSD Approved Evaluatortraining in order to receive the best results from the program.This will help ensure that everyone performs the evaluation in aconsistent manner. Contact the Center for Shelter Dogs at csd@arlboston.org or call (617) 226-5664 to arrange training.The CSD also recommends that you use the online version of theMatch-Up II Shelter Dog Rehoming Program (matchupIIonline.centerforshelterdogs.org) instead of the paper-based version, ifyou are able to access the internet. By using Match-Up II Online,you’ll have immediate access to various interactive tools tohelp you conduct the behavior evaluation online, the ability toautomatically calculate personality scores and triage points, andgenerate outcome reports with recommended training programsfor specific problem behaviors.Behavioral HistoryThe first part of the Match-Up II Program involves collecting adog’s behavioral history. The dog’s behavior in the previous homecan be an important predictor of some behaviors, so a thoroughand objective behavioral history should be obtained for everydog whenever possible. The Behavioral History is also needed tocalculate the triage points for each dog.The CSD’s recommended Intake Profile Form, typicallycompleted by surrendering owners, can be found at www.centerforshelterdogs.org/Home/DogWelfare/Evaluation.aspx.Shelters may also use their own intake forms, as long as theycollect the information needed to complete the behavioralhistory part of the triage form.Organizations that house dogs in foster homes should record thebehavioral information from the foster home and include this inthe Behavioral History part of Match-Up II.Behavior EvaluationThe Behavior Evaluation is a standardized test which measuresa dog’s behavioral reactions to a series of scenarios, which werefer to as sub-tests. Match-Up II is an objective way to evaluatedog behavioral tendencies and personality because the dog’sresponses in each sub-test are described by observed behaviors,body postures and movement, without interpretation or judgementof motivations. For example, the dog’s response to an unfamiliarperson is described by indicating whether the dog was moving awaywith tail tucked, sniffing or approaching wagging tail, rather than bysaying the dog doesn’t like the person or is friendly to the person.The Match-Up II Program is standardized, meaning that allusers do the tests in the same way. Standardization providesconsistency to the evaluation which permits comparison of theresults across all dogs.3
