HELICOPTERS AND PINK GOLF BALLS<br />

AT THE VOLKOWITSCH GOLF OPEN<br />

A sea of pink covered Apple Creek Golf Course in <strong>Bismarck</strong> <strong>on</strong> May 21<br />

during the sec<strong>on</strong>d annual Volkowitsch Golf Open. The tournament,<br />

organized by Ryan Volk and Loren Balkowitsch of <strong>Bismarck</strong>, was held in<br />

memory of Missy Balkowitsch, who battled breast cancer for a number<br />

of years.<br />

A sold-out tournament of 144 golfers enjoyed a day of wacky<br />

challenges at each of the 18 holes, including putting around animal<br />

Loren Balkowitsch, Kim J<strong>on</strong>dahl, Ryan Volk, J<strong>on</strong> Evans<strong>on</strong> , and Ken Dykes hold the pink<br />

d<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> check.<br />

BHS Head Baseball Coach Matt Power presents a check to Sarah Leer, BCC dosimetrist,<br />

for the BCC Foundati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

STRIKING OUT CANCER<br />

Hometown rivals had a great time at the Washingt<strong>on</strong> Street diam<strong>on</strong>d<br />

in April! The <strong>Bismarck</strong> <strong>Cancer</strong> <strong>Center</strong> Foundati<strong>on</strong> was the recipient of<br />

funds raised during “Striking Out <strong>Cancer</strong>,” a double-header fundraiser<br />

of the BHS/CHS baseball teams <strong>on</strong> April 25, <strong>2011</strong>. Both teams wore<br />

pink, and each team member found a $50 sp<strong>on</strong>sor for his jersey.<br />

Pink t-shirts were also sold at the game. BCCF hosted a booth at the<br />

games with educati<strong>on</strong>al items and giveaways. Our deepest thanks goes<br />

to these community-oriented youth!<br />

Thank you to pilot M<strong>on</strong>te Meyers and Barry Schafer for dropping<br />

800 pink golf balls.<br />

decoys,putting with a pool cue, teeing off with a six-foot<br />

driver, and more. At the end of the day, a helicopter dropped<br />

800 pink golf balls for a raffle. Winners were Tori Rittenbach<br />

with the closest ball to the pin, and L<strong>on</strong>nie Lindteigen who had<br />

the ticket for the ball that landed farthest from the pin.<br />

A big thank you to Loren, Ryan, and the many volunteers for<br />

their spectacular fundraiser. The Volkowitsch Golf Open<br />

d<strong>on</strong>ated $14,000 of proceeds to the BCC Foundati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

$10,000 to the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Breast <strong>Cancer</strong> Research Foundati<strong>on</strong>!<br />

Roger brings to the BCCF Advisory Board 40 years of<br />

experience in public service and n<strong>on</strong>-profit health agency<br />

fund-raising and pers<strong>on</strong>nel management, including 17 years<br />

as a senior manager for Pers<strong>on</strong>nel and Fund-Raising with the<br />

American <strong>Cancer</strong> Society, Inc. Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, he possesses<br />

8 years of law enforcement training and experience. Roger<br />

and his staff have pi<strong>on</strong>eered Board of Director Governance<br />

Training Programs principally based <strong>on</strong> the research and<br />

writings of John Carver. Issues related to<br />

successi<strong>on</strong> planning and exiting strategies<br />

for senior executives and/or board members<br />

are specifically integrated into these<br />

presentati<strong>on</strong>s.
