Groundbreaking Technology Arrives in Bismarck:
Bismarck Cancer Center is Third Facility in
Country to Offer Elekta 4D Imaging Technology
Bismarck Cancer Center is the first and only
cancer center in North Dakota to offer patients
the groundbreaking Elekta 4-dimensional
imaging technology for treating specific
cancerous tumors. We’re proud to be only the
third center in the country to showcase this
innovative cancer treatment option.
This new form of technology provides more
precise delivery of radiation therapy to the
tumor. It “shows”the radiation therapy team
exactly where the tumor location is at all times,
allowing for the patient to be adjusted so the
radiation beams accommodate the slightest
internal movements of organs and tissues during
breathing.
“This technology can be compared to an
anatomic GPS system for locating cancerous
tumors and keeping track of them in the most
precise way during treatment,” says Dr. John
Watkins, radiation oncologist with the Bismarck
Cancer Center.“Knowing the position of the
tumor allows us to deliver high doses of
radiotherapy in only three to five treatments with
greater effectiveness than longer-course
treatment. It’s an incredible benefit for cancer
patients in North Dakota to have this world-class
option right here in Bismarck.”
How This Technology Benefits Patients
“This new feature, adding to the state-of-theart
technology that we already had, takes cancer
treatment to a new level,” says Dr. Shrikant
Kubsad, director of medical physics with the
Bismarck Cancer Center.“We’re fortunate to be
the third facility in the country to offer this type
of care using Elekta equipment.”
What does this advanced technology mean for
certain patients receiving radiation therapy?
Because of more precise doses of radiation,
patients may experience:
• Fewer complications
• Less damage to tissue and organs around
the tumor site
• Less recovery time
“For patients who have lung, liver, or spinal
lesions or tumors located in areas that move
easily, this is a great benefit with fewer side
effects,” says Dr. Tarek Dufan, radiation
oncologist with the Bismarck Cancer Center.
“Patients who can be treated with this method
will appreciate the advantages this world-class
technology brings to their care.”
Who Can Be Treated With 4D Technology?
The 4D technology is designed to help treat
certain cancers commonly treated with radiation
therapy including lung, liver and others. For
more information, contact the Bismarck Cancer
Center at 222-6100.

Ken Dykes
Executive Director
Bismarck Cancer Center
“Living” only
takes place when
we can be fully
present in the
moment, when we
allow ourselves to
touch and to be
open to being
touched.
Administrative Note
LIVING IN THE MOMENT
It hardly seems possible that a new year has come. Perhaps, like me, you weren’t quite
through with all the things you’d planned to accomplish during 2010 – the year was
packed to overflowing with some pretty remarkable and neat things, but I just plain wasn’t
done with it yet! I had all those pictures to organize (the idea was to do it before I forgot
why I took them in the first place), a couple of trips I wanted to make, old and dear friends
I was going to visit, a stack of books that I wanted to read, work-related projects that
needed some attention, and … oh, well, you get the idea.
For most of us, there’s always more than enough things that need doing. We run the very
distinct risk of allowing all those things to rule our lives – we can easily fall into the trap of
“doing” rather than “living!” We tend to make lists and run from hither to yon striving to
accomplish every item. As we tick each item off our lists we get lots of “doing” done, but
often at the expense of “living.”
I don’t think the Good Lord minds us being busy, but I also don’t think he gives us much
credit for a thousand tick marks worth of “doing” when they’ve been made at the expense
of not taking the time to appreciate a beautiful sunrise, not taking an instant to gaze into
the eyes of someone you love and tell them how very dear they are to you, not making an
effort to encourage a co-worker, not sharing a special moment with a child, failing to offer
a helping hand or an sympathetic ear, or carving out time to enjoy a friend.
Our lives can be filled with “doing” and can be completely consumed as we rush from
one obligation to the next. But “living” only takes place when we can be fully present in the
moment, when we allow ourselves to touch and to be open to being touched.
The good news is you don’t have to give up “doing” to experience “living.”You just have to
refocus your priorities. It’s been my profound experience that it doesn’t really take a lot of
time to work “living” into your schedule – it just takes being determined to readjust your
priorities and going with the flow. Is it easy? It hasn’t been for me.“Doing” stuff is always
easier. But is the effort worthwhile? You bet your life (to make a bad pun)!
Need some advice and coaching on how to “live” more? You might try asking a cancer
survivor – most of them seem to “get it.” I think it comes with the knowledge that you are
mortal and time is a fleeting resource – you can choose to use it any way you wish, but
once your time is up, you don’t get a second chance.
For me, choosing to make an effort to “live” in the moment has been extremely
rewarding. I’ve actually begun to be able to put some things aside because they’re simply
not worth my time, and I’ve also actually begun regularly taking moments to notice and
enjoy a beautiful full moon, a stranger’s smile, a note of thanks, a small courtesy or
consideration, to savor a favorite dish, the satisfaction of a colleague’s praise, or the way the
snow sparkles when it falls on a bright day. My granddaughter’s smile, my grandson’s
handshake, my son’s embrace, my wife’s gentle touch, my friend’s kind greeting, that good
feeling that comes with helping someone in some small way – now, that’s “living!”
I know your new year will be filled with lots of “doing” – Here’s hoping that it will also be
filled to overflowing with “living!”
Teeing Up for Cancer Patients
Love to golf? There’s still time to register a
team for the second annual Volkowitsch
Golf Open coming up on May 21! The
Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation will
receive proceeds from this fun event
coordinated by Ryan Volk and Loren
Balkowitsch of Bismarck.
Held at Apple Creek Country Club, this
event will include a fun-filled golf
competition followed by a steak dinner at
the club house. At each hole, golfers will be
invited to overcome a challenge such as
teeing off while wearing pink oven mitts,
putting around pink flamingos, and using a
pool cue on the green to reach the hole.
Business sponsorships are still available for
each of the 18 holes.
The event began as a tribute to Melissa
Balkowitsch of Bismarck who has been
battling breast cancer for several years.
“Watching someone you love battle this
disease on a daily basis leaves you with a
feeling of helplessness. This golf
tournament is our way to help others with
their battle with breast cancer, to let them
know that they are not alone and we will do
whatever it takes to help them overcome
and defeat this terrible disease,” said
Loren Balkowitsch.
“We guarantee this will be the most fun
you have had on a golf course in a long
time, and you will also be supporting a
great cause,” added Ryan Volk.
The Bismarck Cancer Center will provide
educational and wellness information
about cancer at a booth display. For more
information, contact the Bismarck
Cancer Center or email Volkowitschgolf@
Meet Ken Dykes
Not only are patients referred to by first name,
but familiar comments and ongoing chatter also
fill the comfortable environment at the Bismarck
Cancer Center. These personal moments warm
Executive Director Ken Dykes’ heart.
After a long career as a hospital administrator
and as the chief operating officer for multihospital
groups, Ken sought a final opportunity
to make a difference in the workplace. He’d
already experienced employment as a chief
executive officer for a number of individual
hospitals as well as serving as the chief
operating officer for several multi-hospital
groups. Ready to make a difference, he moved to
North Dakota and became immersed in the
prairie, the community and the world at
Bismarck Cancer Center. Ultimately, the job
offered him much more than he’d expected to
find.
“Taken with the prospect of working in
Bismarck – and delighted to be chosen by the
board to become a part of their dream to make
this facility a center of excellence for the
treatment of cancer, I knew this would be a very
fulfilling way to end a long career,” Ken says.
“The strength of the collaboration of the two
hospitals [Medcenter One and St. Alexius
Medical Center] and their joint commitment to
creating a world class radiation treatment center
is simply amazing. I’ve been more invigorated in
this job and the opportunity it presents to be of
real service to the community than I’ve been in
years.”
Shortly after becoming employed with BCC,
Ken found himself sitting on the other side of
the desk. Diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal
cancer, he discovered he was at the right place.
Pictured: Ken and Deb, their 8 children and 4 of their 19 grandchildren. From left to
right: Justin, Ken II, Lauren, Marisa, Heather, Stan, Alex, Deb, Gary, Matt, Ken, Irene,
Anna, Lynn, MicaJon
On the flip side of
healthcare,he saw
what patients and
families see; he
learned cutting edge
technology is
crucial. And he felt
the tremendous
caring and warmth
in the community.
“Through the
services offered by BCC and the two medical
centers, we have excellent comprehensive cancer
treatment available right here in Bismarck. We
offer world class technology at BCC, while
providing a culture of compassion among the
people who provide these services,” Ken says.
“And for cancer patients, compassionate,
individualized care may well be the most critical
ingredient to their healing. What is happening to
these folks is both complicated and frightening.
They’ve been forced to come to terms with their
mortality firsthand.”
Further, he learned how cancer patients
discover financial burdens, emotional roller
coasters and transportation costs or travel from
work to be burdensome.“Healing goes much
better when patients don’t worry about the
logistics. When patients can receive the kind of
support we can provide, simply by the way we
wrap our services around them, they find their
needs are met and problems are greatly
alleviated,” Ken says.
Ken finds the “wrap around” approach at BCC
brings the focus back to the individual instead
of concentrating on only the disease or the
radiation treatments.“We recognize treatment
can be a financial strain,
Pictured, left to right: Ken II, Marisa, Heather, Stan, Deb, Gary, Ken, Irene, MicaJon, Lynn
and we do have ways to
reach out to each patient
through our foundation.
In 11 years, we’ve not
turned away a single
patient due to lack of
funding,” Ken says.
He sees a synergistic
effect.“When people do
something good for
another, and that person
goes on to pay it forward
by reaching out to still
another person, we
collectively impact
numerous people.Most people keep reaching,”
he says. And along the way, many people are
ministered to.
Ken sees the future at Bismarck Cancer Center
to be one of ongoing change as they continue to
stay ahead of the curve in medical technology.
Treating cancer specifically without harming
surrounding tissue or organs requires effective,
efficient treatment. BCC has just announced the
addition of a 4D linear accelerator (the machine
which generates the radiation). When the new
technology is up and running, they will upgrade
their existing synergy machine to match the
quality, resulting in two state-of-the-art linear
accelerators. Also in the future, he sees the
center purchasing a rental property or
apartment building for traveling patients.
Ken is passionate about ensuring all patient
needs are met as they continue to provide
seamless medical treatment with equipment
paramount to the industry.“We’re all given an
opportunity to make a difference. This is my
personal opportunity to help make this center
be the very best of its kind,” he says.
He sees himself happier than he’s ever been
and fully enjoys life. Since moving to North
Dakota, he’s weathered winters unlike any from
his past. He and wife Deb enjoy and appreciate
North Dakota prairies and scenery. They each
grab a camera and hit the road from time to
time, capturing photos along the way. Together
they’ve raised eight children and cherish 19
grandchildren. He’s an avid reader and stamp
collector.
“This is the best job in the world. We’re dealing
with people in crisis, but we do see them at
their absolute best; we learn so much from these
patients. They are the most courageous,
compassionate people, more concerned about
families and those they are around than
themselves,” Ken says.“This is what it’s all
about.”

Coaches Vs. Cancer Awareness
Weekend Raises Funds
Pictured:
Mandan Girls’ and Boys’
Basketball Teams
During the national “Coaches Vs. Cancer” Awareness Weekend, coaches and
referees at Mandan high school basketball games helped increase awareness and
raise funding for cancer patients. On January 28, pink whistles and sneakers were
spotted on the courts during the boys’ and girls’ games.
During each game of the double-header, the teams passed buckets around the
crowd and collected donations for the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation. We are
grateful for the support of these civic-minded young men and women!
One hardship many cancer patients in North Dakota must deal with is the extensive travel
that comes with cancer diagnosis and treatment. Our physicians at the Bismarck Cancer
Center recently established outreach clinics in Minot, Jamestown, and Dickinson to help
lessen this burden for patients receiving follow-up care for radiation therapy.
The Bismarck Cancer Center serves patients within a 250-mile radius. Dr. John Watkins
and Dr. Tarek Dufan, radiation oncologists, along with Bismarck Cancer Center nursing
staff, recently began traveling to the three clinics once per month to provide office visits for
their patients.
“Most of our patients come from outside the Bismarck area. As radiation oncologists, we
want to provide our oncology services locally in these three cities, decreasing the
psychological burden associated with traveling and improving the quality of care for our
patients,” stated Dr. Dufan.
“When I walked into the clinic, all of the nurses knew me by first name,” says
Janet Erdmen, a patient seen in Minot.“The doctors are wonderful, and the shorter travel
time was definitely a big plus.”
Patients will be seen in:
St. Alexius Specialty Clinic, Minot – The first Thursday of each month
Medcenter One Jamestown Clinic, Jamestown – The fourth Wednesday of each month
Medcenter One Dickinson Clinic, Dickinson – The fourth Thursday of each month
For more information about the outreach clinics, call 222-6100.
BCC Becomes
travel to Fargo to receive radiation
treatments through the VA healthcare plan.
“Our status as a designated provider for
radiation therapy services will help provide
our state’s veterans with convenient, timely,
and optimal quality care that is close to
home,” said Ken Dykes, executive director of
the Bismarck Cancer Center.“These men and
women have dedicated their lives to serving
our country. It is an honor for us to be able to
help them access the best medical care
possible when they need services.”
Veterans must qualify for services and be
referred for radiation therapy treatment
at no cost to veterans through the Fargo
VA office.
