Ken Dykes
Executive Director
Bismarck Cancer Center
We do not treat
statistics, and we do
not treat prostates,
lungs, breasts, colons,
or other cancer sites.
Instead, we treat
people with cancers
at those sites.
Administrative Note
ARE YOU IN THAT NUMBER?
I was privileged to recently attend a conference on evangelism led by Father Bill Miller, a very
dynamic Episcopal priest from Hawaii. Among other things, Father Miller mentioned his concern
about our society’s fixation on statistics and numbers. He pointed out that statistics and numbers
are nameless, faceless things which do not automatically conjure up the real live human beings they
represent, and that this results in a loss in understanding which is indeed a tragedy. Every human
being has a moving story. His or her life is filled to overflowing with drama that, at times, can rival a
Shakespearean play. We’re not all heroes or heroines, and sometimes our lives are nearer to soap
operas than Shakespeare, but our stories are lived out a breath at time in all manners of
circumstances and not infrequently with an impact on countless others. If we are to be
compassionate and caring in the way we lead our lives, we must be aware that the numbers are first
people, like ourselves, whose stories matter and deserve to be told and celebrated.
Let me give you an example. It’s one thing to say that here at Bismarck Cancer Center we treat an
average of about 40 patients a day. But when I tell you something about the people represented by
those numbers, the statistics take on a whole new meaning – there’s the young, single mother
afflicted with an aggressive brain tumor who’s been working two jobs to raise three kids and is now
having to face a very fragile and uncertain future alone; there’s the single truck driver with
extremely limited resources who is struggling with colon cancer while he faces the possible loss of
his job; there’s the gifted and beloved teacher who, over a long and distinguished career, has
dedicated her life toward the education and welfare of thousands of grade school children and now
struggles physically and emotionally with a breast tumor. The numbers and statistics are important,
but it is the people and the stories behind the numbers that are so much more important.
Those of us involved in the care and treatment of persons afflicted with cancer have a special duty
to ensure that we clearly see each person as an individual with unique concerns and specialized
needs. I believe that we are called to make a personal investment of our time, talent, and interest in
each person whose care and treatment is entrusted to us. We do not treat statistics, and we do not
treat prostates, lungs, breasts, colons, or other cancer sites. Instead, we treat people with cancers at
those sites.
That’s the commitment I ask every day of each BCC physician and staff member. As a cancer
survivor, I know the difference that such an approach can make to the patient. During the course of
my own treatment, it was necessary for me to travel to a major medical center located out-of-state.
While there, I had to undergo a number of procedures. On two occasions, the ancillary services staff
referred to me as the “colon case” as they communicated among themselves. It was as if I wasn’t in
the room, and it was clear that nobody seemed to be aware or even care that I was a fragile human
being who hurt, who was miserable and homesick and afraid ...It wasn’t a good feeling!
I’ve often said that I don’t want anyone working at BCC who doesn’t have a personal sense of
mission to care for those afflicted with cancer. Working here isn’t a job – it’s a “calling.” The people
we are privileged to serve deserve the very best we are able to offer in terms of state-of-the-art
technology and professional care provided in a warm, compassionate, and supportive environment.
That’s our vision at the Bismarck Cancer Center and we work hard to make it a reality. How do we
measure up? Well, according to our patient satisfaction surveys, pretty darned good. I don’t know
that we can be perfect, but I do believe with all of my heart that we are called to make every effort
possible, and to utilize every resource at our disposal, to consistently do the very best job we can to
benefit each and every patient.
Which brings me to a word of thanks. Because of folks like you, who assist us with their time,
talent, and resources, we are consistently able to do more and better things for more and more
people in need of our services. It’s our solemn promise to you that we will not take our responsibility
to care for our patients or our opportunity to be of service lightly, that we will consistently endeavor
to provide the very best and most compassionate services possible to our patients, and that we will
always see each of them as unique individuals meriting the very best in specialized and personal
care.
Thanks again for your support of the Bismarck Cancer Center! May God bless us each and every
one!

Walking the Talk: Melissa Klein
Brandon, Colin and Melissa
Melissa Klein looks forward to ringing
the bell with her radiation patients; albeit
bittersweet. As a radiation therapist at
Bismarck Cancer Center, she works directly
with each of her patients on a day-to-day
basis for the duration of their prescribed
treatment. Each patient different, she grows
a relationship with them, celebrating
victories as well as empathizing with
disappointments.
After greeting and positioning her
patients, she leaves the room briefly to
deliver their treatment – returning to visit
a bit more.“While walking to and from
their daily treatments, we touch base; we
talk about what’s going on in their life,”
Melissa says.“Often the emotions are
obvious. These people show openness as
well as apprehension.Nothing is better
than watching a patient develop and bloom
as they progress through treatment.”
Life stories are shared back and forth. As
patients talk and ask questions of Melissa,
they develop a bond that lasts far longer
than treatment in many cases.“On the last
day of treatment, each patient rings the bell
to celebrate their journey, and it can be
emotional,” Melissa says. Melissa sees
patients outside of the clinic and enjoys
broad smiles, waves or hearty conversation
while catching up.
Outside of her regular work routine,
Melissa often participates in Bismarck
Cancer Center
Foundation
fundraising
events.
Recognizing the
direct impact on
her patients, she
steps up to the
plate whenever
possible to
organize, chair or
participate in
community events
from children’s activities at Applefest, to
Lillians Survivor Diva night, to
participating in Relay for Life.“Fundraising
events are a lot of work, from set up,
participation and tear down; a lot of
manpower is needed. But knowing our
patients are recipients of the monies by
way of having a place to stay or our offering
them transportation and meals is priceless.
So worth our efforts,” says Melissa.
Recently recognized for her commitment,
attitude and integrity, Melissa received the
‘Walk the Talk’ Excellence Award for the
first quarter at Bismarck Cancer Center.
Nominated for her strong character, selfless
actions and positive attitude, she displayed
outstanding service to others. Each quarter,
an independent committee reviews
nominations, then selects one employee
who demonstrates one of the Five
Principles, including:Words to live by are
just words… unless you actually live by
them; You are what you do; Everything you
do counts; The ‘Golden Rule’ is still pure
gold; and Character is key. In his
nomination for Melissa, co-worker Chris
Patrick said,“Melissa has truly gone above
and beyond her responsibilities as a
therapist at BCC and has shown deep
commitment and personal accountability
for the smooth running of the center.”
Melissa says it’s not difficult to maintain a
compassionate, positive attitude at BCC,
“On the last day of treatment, each patient
rings the bell to celebrate their journey,
and it can be emotional,” Melissa says.
since her co-workers are like a family. She
sees a high level of dedication among staff
members to one another – encouraging
one another, helping one another through
difficult times and celebrating milestones
or holidays together.
Melissa’s own family is growing. She and
husband Brandon have two children
(Colin) and new baby Evan, born in June.
Amidst a busy household (they also have
two dogs), Melissa enjoys photography and
has dabbled in taking senior portraits,
wedding photos and birthday photos, but
her favorite subjects are her sons Colin and
Evan. As a family, they enjoy the outdoors
including walks, hiking and riding bike –
all great photo opportunities!
What cancers are
diagnosed most frequently
in North Dakota?
A: Each year, approximately 3,400
North Dakotans are diagnosed with a
new cancer. Four cancer sites – lung,
colorectal,breast,and prostate
account for 56% of cancer cases in
North Dakota.
The good news is that survivorship
is growing. Nearly 70% of people are
surviving more than five years. In
fact, nationally the number of
post-treatment survivors has grown
to nearly 12 million, with almost
Skin Cancer Prevention
Tips from Tara
Most of us want to make the most of
every possible minute outdoors on sunny
days. But please keep skin safety in mind
during time in the great outdoors.
More than two million Americans will be
diagnosed this year with a cancer that is
almost totally preventable – skin cancer.
For the most part, skin cancer, the most
common cancer in the US, is caused by too
much exposure to the sun. People who have
fair skin and freckle or burn in the sun
easily face a higher risk of developing skin
cancer. But people of all skin colors can
develop this disease and should take
precautions to protect their skin.
Most skin cancers are highly curable, but
one form – malignant melanoma – is
much more serious. The number of people
with melanoma has increased by more
than 100 percent since 1973. Luckily, skin
cancer is one of the easiest cancers to
prevent and detect. Prevention and early
detection are the best ways to keep your
skin healthy.
SKIN PROTECTION TIPS
Choose your sunscreen wisely: choose
a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect
against UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays cause
sunburns, but UVA rays also increase your
risk for skin cancer.
Use an SPF of at least 45: SPF stands for
Sun Protection Factor.
THE ART OF LIVING 2012
At the St. Alexius Summer Fun & Safety Day in
May, Tara talked with hundreds of local children
about the importance of sun safety.
Apply sunscreen liberally: Apply one
ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a
ping-pong ball) to every part of your body
exposed to the sun. Don’t forget the ears,
feet, and behind the neck. Your skin can
take up to 30 minutes to absorb sunscreen,
so be sure to apply it about 30 minutes
before going outside.
Remember to reapply sunscreen: Once
you’re outdoors, reapply sunscreen every
two hours, or more often if you’re
swimming or sweating. Even waterproof
sunscreen loses its effectiveness due to
humidity, perspiration, swimming and
uneven application.
Wear lip balm: Apply lip balm with
SPF 30 or higher and reapply it every two
hours.
Tara Schilke is nurse manager with the
Bismarck Cancer Center and hosts education
and wellness seminars.
The Bismarck Cancer Center is seeking visual art for the 2012 edition of “The
Art of Living,” a 12-month desk calendar. Our first calendar in 2010 was a big hit!
Photography and artwork of all styles and media will be considered. Art can
directly illustrate aspects of the cancer experience, but it is not required. We
encourage patients, family, friends, physicians, employees, board members,
donors, and regional artists to submit works for consideration. You do not need to
be a professional artist to be a part of this amazing project!
Please e-mail an image of your artwork to kjondahl@bismarckcancercenter.com
or call Kim at 701-222-6119. Submission deadline is September 1, 2011.

More Than 40 Businesses Supported
BCC’s First project HOPE sm
A diagnosis of cancer is life-changing,
whether it’s personal, that of a loved one, or
a co-worker. To provide cancer prevention
and early detection education to
businesses so they might empower
employees to develop healthier lifestyles,
Bismarck Cancer Center recently teamed
with local businesses to provide tools and
education for their employees.
When Bismarck Cancer Center
Advisory Board members approved the
project, it rolled forward quickly with
the intent of bringing cancer awareness
to the community. Well received, 42 local
businesses jumped aboard project HOPE. These
businesses committed to educating their
employees about healthy lifestyles, cancer
prevention and early detection as well as
offered an opportunity to dress down or wear
colors according to the cancer color of the day.
Project HOPE provided the businesses with
daily cancer health and wellness materials for
this week-long event, highlighting the four
most diagnosed cancers in North Dakota:
prostate, colorectal, breast and lung. Armed
with a project HOPE poster, cancer
awareness information, participation
stickers, paycheck inserts, and e-mail
content, businesses held wellness events for
their organization during the week of
May 16-20, 2011 (designated project HOPE
week by Mayor John Warford and Mayor
Tim Helbling). In turn, employees
responded by donating $10 to project
HOPE and dressing to the cancer color of
the day.
A casual event, employees scanned
through emails at their leisure, read
through handouts containing pertinent
information regarding sun exposure,
ways to incorporate exercise, appropriate
things to say or do for cancer patients as
well as cancer specific handouts.
Handouts shared focused risk factors,
symptoms, screening tests, prevention
and other information for each cancer-
specific day.
Additionally, each business displayed a memory board
allowing staff to jot words of inspiration or support for
either their staff or customers.
VUE Community Credit Union demonstrated their support by
wearing pink during project HOPE week.
“The project has been a huge success and
the employees have really enjoyed it. It has
brought much awareness to us and the
members of our Credit Union,”VUE
Community Credit Union President Patty
Mathisen said.“We have employees with
many family members affected by the
disease. This has not only been awareness
for us, but Bismarck Cancer Center has
been an inspiration, just knowing you all
care.”
BCC Radiation Therapy Manager Amy
Gross said it was very well received in the
community: “Each business really
embraced the event, and many even
matched their employee donations. Some
went the extra mile to ensure complete
involvement by their staff. One business
instilled a Hawaiian theme, allowing their
staff to dress the part.”
BCC looks forward to future successes and
hopes to move project HOPE to outreach
cities: Jamestown, Minot, Dickinson and
others.“We’d like to see information
brought to these communities as well,”Amy
says.
Established three years ago, the Bismarck
Cancer Center Foundation is committed to
providing hope, help and healing to cancer
patients during their journey. By providing
financial support, assistance with
transportation, lodging, emotional and
spiritual care, dietary care as well as
massage and physical therapies, the
Foundation provides hope to cancer
patients and families as they are affected by
the disease.
