modernization or modification of the methods of their preparation or production.as there is no way to establish the equivalence of the product made by themodified method with the original product. Thus standardized drugs of welldefined consistent quality are needed for reliable clinical trials and therapeuticuse. The major reason advanced for the difficulty in developing quality controlstandards is that these products use whole plant or parts of plants or their totalextracts, and in some cases even a mixture of a number of plants, it is thuschallenging to develop suitable standards because a vegetable drug or apreparation thereof is regarded as one active ingredient in its entity, whether ornot the constituents with therapeutic activity are known. Standardization, of aherbal drug and of a preparation thereof is not just an analytical operation, itdoes not end with the identification and assay of an active principle rather itembodies total information and controls which are necessary to guaranteeconstancy of composition.
