66REBEL CITIESTH E URBANIZATION OF CAPITALThe reproduction of capital passes through processes of urbanization inmyriad ways. But the urbanization of capital presupposes the capacityof capitalist class powers to dominate the urban process. This impliescapitalist class domination not only over state apparatuses (in particularthose aspects of state power that administer and govern the socialand infrastructural conditions within territorial structures), but also overwhole populations-their lifestyles as well as their labor power, their culturaland political values as well as their mental conceptions of the world.That level of control does not come easily, if at all. The city and the urbanprocess that produces it are therefore major sites of political, social, andclass struggles. We have heretofore examined the dynamics of this strugglefrom the standpoint of capital. It therefore remains to examine theurban process-its disciplinary apparatuses and restraints as well as itsemancipatory and anti-capitalist possibilities-from the standpoint of allthose who attempt to gain their livelihood and reproduce their daily livesin the midst of this urban process.
