The Taliban: Mullah Omar – the leader of the Taliban. Shot in his right eye during the Jihadagainst the Russians.Mullah Omar, the leader of the Taliban tells his story ofhow the Taliban began. Him and some students weretired of the civil war, hearing of women being kidnapped, raped and killed and people being robbed off theirwealth – him and the students (Taliban) decided to giveup their religious studies for the greater good ofenjoining the good and forbidding the evil in Kandahar(the birthplace of the Taliban movement). Seeking thehelp of God, and borrowing a motorbike and truck (in1994) – they travelled and fought against corruptwarlords and thieves to bring stability to the people intheir neighborhoods. Once their influence increased, thelocal people supported them. They then extended theirefforts to other areas until gradually their influence hadspread over all of Afghanistan by the year 2001. Thenthe American led war started against them, they fled tothe mountains to regroup and fight back.American Hubris:After the Afghan war with Russia, USA had gone through a stage of 'imperial hubris'(meaning: pride and a big mistake of perceived invincibility because they were now theworlds only superpower.) They had left Afghanistan in its totality, not even putting anembassy there (through which they could know (or 'spy') indepth about what ishappening in the country.) They had only a handful of spies there, so for 5years after thedefeat of Russia, USA was completely blind in its pride as to what was happening inAfghanistan. This would be one of the causes of its downfall in the long-term future*,some might say by chance, others will say by Allah's plan.A Mullah in Pushto (Afghanistan's national language) is a Student of religiousknowledge (and Maulvi is a Scholar). Mullah Omar left his last year of studies to freeAfghanistan from corrupt warlords and to establish a strict Islamic law to control theviolent warlords who would not submit to a soft law. The Islamic law the Talibanfollowed was 'an eye for an eye, a life for a life.' No-one would dare harm anotherperson except that they were at the risk of being punished with an equal harm by theharmed. This worked extremely well under Taliban rule and brought stability and peaceat levels unmatched in Afghan history.21
