4 Providence St. Mel School Annual Report 2009We are not frightenedby the challenges of reality, but believe that wecan change our conceptionof this worldand our place within it.

What a year this has been for Providence St.Mel! We are delighted to review our year withyou and share the highlights of what has beena truly remarkable time. What began as a highschool determined not to close is today a schoolthat offers an education of the highest qualityto more than 550 students in grades pre-Kthrough 12.Throughout our 30-year history, Providence St. Mel has been described with such labels as TheSchool that Refused to Die, A Beacon of Hope, The Hard Work School, The School that Works, and, more recently, A Model for Urban Education. Each label captures the essence of our school;each attests our capacity to instill in all of our students — from our pre-kindergarteners to ourseniors — the fundamental values of responsibility, self-respect, self-reliance, perseverance, andcommitment. In 2008-2009 academic year, our students met the challenges. We are proud and delighted toacknowledge their achievements. As has happened since our school began 30 year ago, 100percent of our high school graduates have been accepted to four-year colleges and universities.Further, since 2001, over 50 percent of our graduates have been accepted to some of the mostprestigious institutions of higher education in the country. Carrying on this tradition of a perfectcollege acceptance rate, the members of the Class of 2009 also merited $3.2 million in scholarshipsfrom the colleges and universities they are now attending. School-wide, our students scored atthe 75th percentile — 25 points above the national norm — on the Terra Nova Achievement Testin 2009. In state and local academic and arts competitions, our students continue to distinguishthemselves, winning awards and impressing judges and peers. When we consider where our school has come from and where we are today, how manyaccomplishments can be listed and how many success stories can be told — when we considerour 30 years and this single year — we thank each of you for your continued support and yoursincere faith in our mission. You have provided the means to make a Providence St. Mel educationattainable for as many students as possible. Indeed, every contribution, no matter how large orsmall, has been, is, and continues to be vital to our students and our school.Providence St. Mel: Inspired is what we are. Creating inspired lives is what we do. On behalf ofour students whose lives continue to be enriched by the support of our donors and friends, wethank you.Sincerely,Dear Friends,Paul J. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, our teachers, administrators, staff, and, most important, our diligent students and their appreciative families, I take greatdelight in thanking you for your steadfast support of and financial investmentin Providence St. Mel School. It is only with your generous assistance that thisextraordinary school has been able to achieve thirty years of academic excellence. In the 2008-2009 academic year, we had much to celebrate! You, our manysupporters and friends, share greatly in this momentous year and truly specialanniversary. From the very beginning, Providence St. Mel has embraced and promoted discipline andhard work, high expectations and school-wide accountability, challenging curriculum andeffective classroom instruction. To break the devastating cycle of poverty and dependence, this special school provides a transformative education to very determined students, instilling in them confidence and pride, and enabling them to excel both academically andpersonally. From day one, this school has achieved results, producing graduates who attaincollege educations, pursue satisfying professional careers, and contribute constructively totheir families and communities.Over these three decades of academic excellence, Providence St. Mel has seen manifoldchanges, witnessed many impressive accomplishments, reached several lofty goals, andpassed a number of notable milestones. Doubtless, without such caring partners as you, ourschool and our students would never have come this far and achieved so much. It is you andyour fellow contributors that enable this school to create these inspired lives. My fellow trustees and I provide the school with vital guidance, direction, and financialresources. Moreover, we act as conscientious stewards of the financial means you havecontributed — this wise investment you have made in this exceptional school located in acommunity that still offers little hope and fewer opportunities. As you read this annual report and reflect on the accomplishments of not only the 2008-2009academic year but the past thirty academic years, I hope that you will recognize the vitalrole you have played and can continue to play in helping to create inspired, successful, andremarkable lives. Great are the value and importance of your investment, which continues toyield high returns: the graduates of Providence St. Mel.As we look back on the year and on the many years, we also look ahead, knowing that whatgot us here — hard work — will get us there and beyond. Some of the country’sbest educators work atProvidence St. Mel— we inspire success!Beverly BaarI joined Providence St. Mel in 2001. My main role is thedepartment chair for all of the related arts programs in prekindergartenthrough high school and I also teach musicfor the lower school. Working hard each day to do my verybest for our students, I believe that they take this exampleto heart and are themselves inspired to work as hard asthey can. Interacting withstudents from all gradelevels, I’m amazed by theindividual gifts and keenefforts of these determinedstudents and I’m energizedby my colleagues, whovalue the ethic of hardwork and respect the highstandards this special schoolconsistently achieves.Teresa CullenCurrently in my 13th year at Providence St. Mel, I startedas the sophomore and junior counselor and volleyballcoach and am now the athletic director, volleyballcoach, and physicaleducation teacher.I believe it isessential to instillan ethic of hardwork and a sense ofaccountability in theyouth of today. Notonly do we preachthe word, we live theword. I am proudof the responsible, productive youngpeople we send out into the world, and I feel blessed to bea part of shaping their lives.10 Providence St. Mel School Annual Report 2009

Christel WardI started at Providence St. Mel as the high school business andtechnology teacher in 1997. Today, I am the dean of studentsand faculty. As dean, I inspire students by showing them thattheir actions have consequences and that they can choose abetter course. Part ofthe discipline processis allowing the studenttime to think about hisor her inappropriatebehavior and to makeplans for a better choicein the future. To observethe progress of studentsthrough the academicyear — as they learn thelessons of self-discipline,respect for others, anddedication to their studies— is something that I find most fulfilling about my role asan educator.Joan GerigIn my 11th year as librarian, I continue to choose hundredsof books that will inspire our students. Many are used forresearch (starting with kindergarten), while others are forinformational or recreational reading. I select books thatreflect our students so theywill be inspired by people whoare like them and are growingup in communities similarto theirs. I love my positionbecause I get to work withpreschoolers to high schoolseniors. It’s great to work witha team of educators who wantthe best for our students andwho work for the best.11

Adrienne Hawkins-TurnerNow in my 14th year, I currently serve as the departmentchair for high school math and as a member of the leadershipteam. I teach honors algebra andsurvey of engineering as well ascoordinate our Worldwide Youthin Science and Engineeringteam and lead efforts for thepreparation for the PSAT andACT tests. I expect all mystudents to do their best and betheir best, and I work to showthem how to do and be just that.As an educator, I find it so fulfilling to play a part in helpingour school provide the knowledge, skills, and inspiration sothat each student has the opportunity to excel. The reward isthe result: the college acceptances and, ultimately, the careeropportunities for our graduates.Julie Jovan SheerinI came to Providence St. Mel in the fall of 2000 to teachkindergarten, drawn by the quality of the school, its importantmission, and the opportunity tomake a difference. In 2004, I wasselected to be the division chairfor grades kindergarten throughsecond, and with the addition of ourpre-kindergarten in the fall of 2008,I now oversee all the lower gradesup to fifth grade. As our youngeststudents continue to learn how tolearn while they are gaining skillsand, like little sponges, soakingin knowledge, I remind thesebright-eyed and eager children that they will go to college, theywill succeed, they will grow up one day to be something andsomeone special. Knowing that their teachers care so muchabout them inspires them to want to learn even more. For me,I am inspired and amazed by our young students, who seem toprogress in leaps and bounds. No tortoises here. These younglearners are greyhounds!12 Providence St. Mel School Annual Report 2009

Kevin McGrathI’ve been teaching at Providence St. Mel for 13 years, teachingphysical science to freshmen and eighth-graders. CurrentlyI am the middle schooldepartment chair andscience departmentchair. I also serve as thecoordinator for Saturdaytutoring. For the past nineyears, I’ve been teaching, tutoring, and mentoringstudents nearly six days aweek. Students know that,if they need assistanceor some extra help, I amthere for them. I hope mydedication, like that of mycolleagues, inspires themto apply themselves toattaining impressive goals.Seeing how our studentspersevere despite real obstacles that would discourage most, I amfired up daily to become a better teacher — a better person.Marci Van Gilder-RubinIn the summer of 1998, I applied to Providence St. Mel inresponse to a one-line advertisement: “Junior High Englishteacher needed.” That tinynewspaper ad changed my life.Today I am the professionaldevelopment chair and providesupport to all our teachers asthey grow professionally, givingthem guidance in meeting ourhigh expectations and, ultimately,in giving our students the besteducation possible. Teaching atProvidence St. Mel is demanding, and I hope that teachers feel supported, appreciated, andinspired after working with me. To be sure, I’m inspired bythe wonderful people who come each day to make this school abetter place.13

Inspiring Young LivesProvidence St. Mel Launches Pre-K Program in the Fall of 2008Recognizing that the years before a child reaches kindergarten are the most critical in hisor her life to influence learning, Providence St. Mel launched a pre-kindergarten programin the fall of 2008. With our new pre-kindergarten, we entered a significant new phase inour development as an exceptional college-preparatory school. We now begin even earlierin children’s lives to prepare them to undertake a disciplined education that will lead toacceptance to a four-year university or college.Too often, pre-kindergarten at many schools is little more than unstructured, variableactivities. At Providence St. Mel, however, our pre-kindergarten is academic-based ratherthan play-centered. Our class size is capped to no more than 20 students to allow for a 10-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. We teach our youngest learners the core disciplines of reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and social skills. As well, we focus on grossand find motor skill development that will begin their academic foundation. What better way to celebrate our 30th anniversary,” said Principal Jeanette DiBella, “than toput in place a program that will have such a fundamental impact for these children and theireducation — and for our school.”This new prekindergartenprovidesour four-year-oldswith an enrichingeducational experiencethat prepares them toenter the kindergartenready to learn. It isnever too early to startsuccess and to inspireyoung lives.15 15

Inspired by a True StoryProvidence St. Mel Board of Trustee member J. Thomas Hurvis was inspiredto bring the story of the school to the big screen.Feeling that the nation was approaching an educational crisis, Mr. Hurvisthought that if other schools could emulate PSM, the problem could begin to besolved. “This school,” said Mr. Hurvis, “has a proven track record of success overthe past several decades, delivering an educational product that trulyserves the children and offers the best model for other urban schools.”His brainchild, The Providence Effect, is a documentary that chroniclesthe history, outlines the instructional principles, and highlights many ofthe accomplishments of Providence St. Mel.Production was no easy task. Mr. Hurvis decided the best way to getthe message across to the audience was to somehow capture a day in thelife at this extraordinary school. And the filming began.J. Thomas HurvisWith boom and lavaliere microphones, lighting equipment and camerasin tow, film crews stepped in and transformed Providence St. Mel intoa live movie studio! They traveled down PSM hallways, shot footageof classes in session and conducted interviews with teachers, alumni, students and parents. Special emphasis was placed on capturing PrincipalDiBella in action as she quickly moved from classroom to classroom checking into make sure teachers and students alike were accountable for their actions .Through Mr. Hurvis’s perseverance and dedication, the film moved from mereidea to a completed film that continues to garner praise and impress audiences. The journey began in the Spring of 2009 by winning the Omaha Film Festival,Seattle True Independence Film Festival and Lake County Film Festival. The Providence Effect is scheduled to have a wider release in 2010.Alumni ProfilesSylvia L. An Appeal for Creating Inspired LivesAlthough our tuition remains among the lowest of allindependent schools in Chicago, it is still much more thanwhat hundreds of our struggling families can afford. The true cost to educate a student at Providence St. Mel ismore than double our modest tuition. Even though our schoolautomatically underwrites more than half of this true cost, the great majority of our students require yet additionalfinancial aid.Only through the assistance of such caring partners as you canProvidence St. Mel continue to keep tuition low, provide muchneededscholarships, meet operating expenses, and offer vitalacademic and enrichment programs.Quite simply, instructing, guiding, and shaping the young livesat our school would not be possible without your most generousfinancial support.
